GREENS!

IMG_6208Blog

A handful of you mentioned that I could try green smoothies to get in more greens. DUH! Why didn’t I think of that?

Well I did, but the thought of buying the raw spinach was not appealing. But once it was in my fridge, taking a big handful and putting it in the blender was no biggie. And like I’ve been telling other people for ages – you really can’t taste it!

IMG_6215Blog

Under the greens went approximately:

  • 1/4 cup OJ (for iron absorption!)
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen berries
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

And on top went:

  • Cville Cluster crumbs
  • Morning O’s
  • shredded wheats
  • Coconut butter, which I melted in the microwave and then poured on to form a magic shell!

IMG_6213Blog

It was purple from the berries, but this tasted divine!! Hopefully as the weather warms I can drink smoothies again. And hopefully as the weeks tick on my palate for salads will return!

IMG_6212Blog

Have a great morning!

That is a perfect pregnancy breakfast. It’s funny, I had a session with a newly pregnant client this morning, her first baby too, and I recommended that she eat a smoothie like this a few times a week for breakfast.

Glad you are eating your veggies.

I love green smoothies and actually had one this morning! You are right, you really can’t taste the spinach at all! My husband will even drink them, and that’s saying something.. 🙂 They may not be pretty, but they are a great way to sneak in veg and nutrients!

I had green smoothies for breakfast often earlier in this pregnancy…then it was Oatmeal Squares…now it’s Greek yogurt with a little Kashi on top. Salads are still iffy at 27 weeks, but definitely doable. It’s much more appealing to just do the veggie toppings without the lettuce! I also used to not be a fan of fruit teas, and now I love them! So weird. My food aversions left very slowly, until one day I realized I could walk through the grocery store without gagging or burying my nose in my scarf – victory! In the meantime, eat what sounds good, and know you’ll be back to normal eventually.

Hey Kath! Just wanted to share some nutritional information 🙂 So while OJ does help your body absorb the iron from the spinach the calcium from the milk prevents the human body from absorbing iron from plant sources. Here is a link to an article about what foods can prevent iron absorption:
    http://www.livestrong.com/article/277074-what-foods-prevent-iron-absorption/
So milk and OJ in a spinach smoothy are actually counter productive in terms of boosting your iron. Its better to make your smoothy with just OJ and a few hours later have some milk. My Dad has chronically low iron levels despite eating well and taking iron supplements so my family is all over the iron info lol. Hope you have a great day!!!

Thanks for sharing this – I had forgotten about the milk in there too.

Actually I take my prenatal vitamins in the evening for this very reason. I almost always have milk or dairy in the morning, so morning is the worst time to take a vitamin. Also calcium has a max absorption so it’s better to spread out calcium throughout the day too.

Noticed you said you added the OJ for iron an absorption but just wanted to mention that my doctor told me that dairy products prevent iron being absorbed properly. (I take iron pills and she said I shouldn’t have milk/yogurt up to an hour before or after) Just thought I’d mention this because I noticed you had the OJ and the milk in there! I’m sure you probably already know this though in which case I am sorry!
