Frodo, Conan + Oats

Marnin’! It sure is a beautiful one here in the Carolinas. A high in the 70s and sparkling sunny!!

And a perfect day for hot oats and coffee. I can feel my fall + winter taste palate returning. SIAB isn’t as appealing already!

IMG_1742 (480x640)

I made a duo batch for Matt since he is working 9-5 today.

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/3 cup 2% milk
  • >Half a banana
  • Pinch salt
  • Vanilla
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 Cherry Almond ota.bar
  • TJs toasted almonds
  • Barney Butter
  • Flax

Looks rather small in my conical bowl!

I tried a new Marley Coffee that was excellent

We got to watch Conan over breakfast and Elijah Wood was on. LOVE Lord of the Rings! Frodo for life! He’s so cute. Conan made me laugh out loud about 5 times, which might be a record for one TV show! I’m hard to impress 😉

It’s going to be one of those back-2-back days. I’ve got a Real Food Consultation call, followed by a group exercise class with Victoria at the south CLT YMCA, then shower/lunch, then 3 classes in a row. Wheeee!

I am excited for pumpkin! I’m patiently waiting the return of 15 oz cans of pumpkin to my supermarket – I went to buy some for pumpkin bread and all I could find were 29 oz cans.

    I bought 2 winter squash already — I’m ready for chilly-time foods! 🙂

Isn’t it funny how a slight change in weather changes our appetite. Suddenly soups and chili and oats are more appealing than salads, and ice cream and smoothies. I still love the others but not as regularly as the summer.

I also love when TV actually makes you laugh out loud. Of course things are funny but when they are so funny you audibly laugh it’s great. 🙂

I’m currently enjoying my first batch of hot oats in quite a while and it’s better than I remember! Lately it’s just been yogurt/cereal or overnight oats. Missed my hot oats!

    I’m not ready for Fall!

We haven’t had much of a summer here in Chicago… it’s only really been hot for August, other than that it’s been cooler / rainy. I need some more sunshine, tomatoes, corn, and fish on the grill before I move into crisp air, butternut squash, cranberries and stew!

Hi Kath how does it feel to be almost done with the classroom work? i just started down a 2 year path toward my RD (already have some complementary degrees under my belt). However, I am not sure I want to follow the “traditional” RD route. I’d love to hear more of your thoughts about your long term goals.

It’s chilly here (Nebraska) today, too! I’m LOVING it!!!

I made my first bowl of overnight oats yesterday and it was awesome! It was so convenient to take to school with me and eat in my office. That’s definitely going to be my go-to option on mornings when I know I’ll have to pack breakfast, and I can’t wait to experiment with all sorts of flavor variations! I was wondering… Have you ever tried warming it up before eating???

Hi, Kath! I have a quick question for you. I had overnight oats for breakfast with 3/4 c. soy milk for breakfast and, without thinking about the amount of soy I’d be consuming today, I cut up about 6 oz. of tofu and have it marinating at home for lunch. Once I thought about having soy-based meals twice today, I googled it and got LOTS of varying opinions about how much is too much … Maybe once or twice a week, I consume about this much soy in one day … Do you think this is too much? What’s your opinion about healthy levels of soy consumption? Thanks!

    Question for you:

You’ve mentioned before (I believe) that bigger meals/less snacks works better for you than the hyped more frequent, smaller meals.

I feel the same way! More frequent, smaller portions just do not fill me up. I need my 3 meals a day, pretty calorically dense at each, to be full. I do count my calories so I know that as a total it’s the same as if I were to break it up throughout the day, so it all balances out.

I’m just curious if you know from a nutritional stand-point why that is- that some people need a larger volume of foods to feel full, and some people need more frequency to feel full.

Just something I’ve been thinking about 🙂

    Nicole,
A wedding at Biltmore! How romantic!

    Nicole II,
    They showed that on Conan!

    Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries,
I have heard that but haven’t seen it in action. Sounds scary though!

    Em,
Costco’s vanilla organic shelf stable kind.

    Megan,
You must watch them one rainy weekend! Start to finish. Appreciate the beauty of the movies more than the complicated plot 🙂

    rachel nc,
I will not be traditional 🙂 I hope to do a lot of media involvement – freelance writing, magazine pitching, videos, news channels? TV show!? Blogging. Private practice online. Etc.

    Katie,
I don’t warm it because I usually put yogurt in, but if I didn’t, you could def. heat it up and would save cooking time, I bet.

    Carrie H,
I personally think it’s fine to have soy everyday, especially in whole food form (as opposed to soy protein isolate and what now). I wouldn’t have it if you have estrogen fed cancers in your family and sometimes with thyroid trouble history, but for a normal person, I think it’s fine to have 1-2 servings a day.

    Adventures of Alice,
Usually 2tsp to 1 tbsp, but sometimes I got a little overboard!

    Angie,
I honestly think it’s just habit and personality. I think anyone will adapt and get used to the opposite eating style, but I do think psychology and personality also have a play and it’s not all about stomach size and satiety. I have trouble stopping eating, so grazing doesn’t work well for me.

    Julie,
Both!! I’ve used all sizes of grinds.

Kath- I was thinking that your oats always look HUGE and yet when i make them they are so tiny. Today was the exception- guess the big bowl is an optical illusion! Question: did you feel as “satisfied” with those oats because they seemed so small in the bowl? I know it’s the same amount- I mean psychologically.
