Freaky Freekeh

IMG_8860-2Blog

Great Harvest Cville on the hill! Now featuring…Stuffing Bread (it’s just what it sounds like – a bread that tastes like stuffing!), Rosemary Garlic, Coconut Muffins, Autumn Spice Cookies and more for November.

IMG_8859-2Blog

I had to give the Autumn Spice a taste test – and went back for another quarter (our cookies are big!). It was excellent – chewy and slightly gingerbready with apricots and golden raisins.

IMG_8858-2Blog

I walked to the bakery and back [#dreamlife] and made it home just before sunset to get dinner going.

IMG_0150Blog

Have you ever heard of freekeh!? Lauren brought me some from her co-op’s bulk bins when she visited a few weeks ago. It’s green wheat that has been parched, roasted, smoked and dried. It’s high in fiber and protein. THIS WEBSITE can tell you way more about it than I can!

IMG_0140Blog

It’s a lot like bulgur, wheatberries and rice all in one. What I noticed most about it is it tastes like it was cooked in chicken broth!! It had so much flavor. I liked it a lot for a dinner grain option!

IMG_0144Blog

The freekeh was the stair, but on the side I made sautéed Brussels sprouts with frozen edamame and frozen bacon that turned out to be a pretty awesome dish.

IMG_0143Blog

I put the bacon in first and cooked it then removed it and added the beans and sprouts plus a wee bit of water when the oil flavor was absorbed and put a lid on it. Steamed for a good 10 minutes or so, stirring occasionally, and then seasoned with salt and pepper and a drizzle of herby olive oil.

IMG_0152Blog

The freekeh was served on the side with some parm cheese on top

IMG_0151Blog

Good dinner! Matt raved.

IMG_0149BlogIMG_0148Blog

For dessert, I had 3 Triple Ginger Snaps. Those things are addicting and so good!

Hoping to climb into bed early and read on my new Kindle APP! My phone [Samsung Infuse – still in love] is big enough that reading via the Kindle app is actually quite handy. I put it on sepia background and smallish font and love just laying on my side and swiping the pages. I’ve always said the worst part of reading is the positions you have to be in to hold a book. I do miss the physical book a bit – but not after I get comfy. It also means I don’t have to keep the light on if Matt is trying to sleep! Many perks.

The book – Nicholas Sparks’ The Best Of Me. After Little Bee and The Postmistress I needed something light and romantic! I did have to pay for it verses borrowing, recycling or librarying, but that’s ok every now and then. Will be great for travel to Foodbuzz this weekend!

Man, I am impressed (but not at all surprised!) at the meal that you made out of that Freekeh! I think I might have to steal that recipe! Thanks for spreading the Freekeh love- it’s my mission to introduce it to more people so that they can love it as much as I do. You’ll have to try it for breakfast sometime too. It’s good, but doesn’t keep me full as long as oatmeal does.

I just got the Samsung Galaxy II S and love it! It’s my first smartphone so you can imagine the difference.

Do you flavor your olive oil and if so, how? I would love to do that.

You do have a “dreamlife” being able to walk to work and all your errands during the week. I couldn’t even imagine that. You just can’t get more convenient than that. 🙂

All of your November breads, cookies and muffins sound SO good! I wish I lived closer.

Also, on a totally unrelated comment. Have you switched to the new GMail look yet? They updated their look, and in a couple days everyone will be forced to take on the new look but I switched early and hate it. Mostly because they took away customizable colors! I couldn’t help but think of your nerd KERF GMail videos. Why would they make it less customizable? I hope it’s something they fix soon!

I am VERY unhappy about the location of the archive button and star buttons. They should be at the bottom where your mouse and eyes are after reading an email…

      otherwise, pretty cool.

I really miss the white space in the middle of the screen though…and I don’t like that they pushed everything up to the top. I prefer it more spread thorughout

If you can find the free app called OverDrive and you have/get a library card, you can use the library to borrow books for your phone. Best part…freeeee!! Happy reading! 🙂

Yvette beat me to it! Kindle just recently started library lending with Overdrive. Here is the link on amazon that explains how the process works…http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_200127470_ksupport_library?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200747550.

I love checking out ebooks and my library has a 7, 14 or 21 day lending period and once the period is up the book simply opens and tells you to either check it out again or provides a link to purchase the book you were reading on Amazon.

This isn’t meant as criticism, I’m just honestly wondering:

I’ve been reading/commenting on your blog for a while now, and I’ve started to pick up on you always specifying the exact amounts of something you ate/drank. Why do you think you have to specify that you ate 3 tiny cookies, 1/4 of a bakery cookie, or a sip or alcohol?

The freekeh (heh) sounds super interesting. I’ll have to see if I can find it around and give it a try.

Probably because this blog is rooted in weight loss and was originally a food diary for me. I’m just used to it.

I also don’t think it’s much different than saying “I spent 30 minutes waiting at the dentist” or “my daughter had 5 friends over.”

When you’re writing about life, numbers help to set the scene.

I like reading about those little details as sometimes you can’t objectively estimate your own portions and it allows me to put the amount of food I eat in perspective. Of course for some eating 10 cookies could be not enough and for others 1/4 of one is a feast, but nonetheless it gives me something to go by.
