Flying Smoothie

‘Twas a running day!

I think all of us were experiencing some second-day-soreness from Wednesday’s beach run. It was tough to get going! But I had that gut feeling that once I got moving my stiffness would loosen, and I was right.

We did 3/4 a mile on the beach to the pier, then meandered on dry land for maybe 2 miles (I do not like running on land! I like the beach!! But it was a compromise run because Kanz does not like the beach). Then we ran the last 3/4 a mile back up the beach from the other direction. Matt led us in some fartleks for that last bit – sprint intervals. I think we hit a 7 minute mile at once point! I like intervals, but they are hard to do by yourself.

Just having sat down to breakfast, my gosh my legs sent me a woosh of tiredness.

I used to be very much opposed to Gatorade. It’s just sugar water with electrolytes. But guess what. I turned into an athlete. And Gatorade is perfect for athletes. I had a few big gulps before my hot beach run and it was just what I needed to get going.

[FYI, I much prefer coconut water but can’t always find it or afford it!]

Post run I whipped up some smoothies –

Threw in some cherries!

Whirled.

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • Handful Ice
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • ~10 cherries
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/3 cup Vega Vanilla Almond Shake n Go Smoothie
  • 1.5 cups 1% milk

Plus Bear Naked Apple Pecan trail mix (really, really like this!) and coconut butter –

Regretting not finding some shade for this! Too bright!

IMG_6868 (640x427)

In all my years of food blogging, I have never spilled food while moving it around for a shoot. But today my beach dress got caught in the sliding door and a nice blob of smoothie sloshed on the deck and all down my bowl. I cried 🙁

Flying smoothie.

I went with an iced coffee today!

Bada bing. Bada boom.

Hooray for a running day and cherries! Breakfast looks awesome!

Quick q – do you have to scarf down your smoothie bowls because they melt?? Sometimes by the time I’m almost finished mine, it gets too watery to eat 😛

    Any suggestions??
    Thank ya! 🙂

If that’s the first time you’ve ever spilled, I’m impressed! I spill food on myself, well, pretty much daily!

I’ve been trying to gauge the “thickness” of your smoothies from your photos but am not always excited.
Are they more creamy /thick (like frozen yogurt), more like a juice-texture, or in between?

    Your running truly amazes me!

Every one is different. I don’t have a standard recipe – just throw stuff in as the ingredients allow. I like them thick but this one was rather thin.

And I don’t know why I said “excited” – as if I wasn’t impresed with your smoothies (quite the contrary!). I meant to say it wasn’t evident…somehow came out wrong and no proof reading. Oops! :S

I am with you on intervals. I love them, but I like doing them with someone. It really pushes you and keeps you motivated. Workout buddies are the best! Enjoy your day!

I remember learning in Home Ec that Gatorade was basically the devil in liquid form, so it’s neat to hear that it actually does have a purpose (aside from just tasting good!).

It’s amazing how ones body loosens up from soreness after beginning to workout. I had the same experience at my boot camp class early this morning:) Have a great afternoon!

And sorry about your spillage! Nothing a good wash can’t take care of, though 😀

I’ve been flirting with gatorade and the propel powder thingies in water for running. Didn’t you do a homemade (maybe less evil?) version once? I can’t find the old post though. 🙁

Oh no not the smoothie! I like your comments on Gatorade. I don’t drink the stuff usually but my PT recommended it on hard workout days. I may have to give it a try to see if I can handle the sugar.

Look for a product called Recharge. It is a an all natural “gatorade” Made by Knudsen I believe. Really really good and not filled with junk like Gatorade.

I like Smart Water for electrolytes without the sugar. Agreed though that coconut water is the best…love that stuff! I just picked some up from Earthfare on sale for 99cents each, but it has a “splash of” various fruit juices (mango, passion fruit, guava). I hope they’re good! 🙂

I’ve never had gatorade or sports drinks after a workout because I’m not sure how vigorous a workout has to be to require electrolyte replacement. Do you know anything about this?

that’s so funny: I used to think the SAME thing about Gatorade–all that sugar and food dye! but I reconsidered because I was getting so dehydrated after long runs and would lose all my body’s natural salt, which made my fingers swell. so crazy!

glad you’re enjoying the beach. I’m landlocked–my only hope is the pool.
