Flavors, New + Old

Good morning!!

Foodblog-6192

Matt was home this morning which meant 2x baby snuggling and a cup of coffee delivered to me in bed! Loving the programmable coffee maker again : ) I sipped on the coffee while I tidied up the nursery. I put away the rock n play and clean up anything I used the night before and threw aside. I felt like such a parent with a coffee cup…

Foodblog-6194

…and wearing my “house coat” : ) Totally getting my money’s worth out of this robe!

Foodblog-6196

I stashed a variety of bars in the nightstand because sometimes I’m pretty hungry in the middle of the night. I’ve been nibbling off of this one the past few nights and loved it!

Foodblog-10

After the nursery was tidy, Maze tried on one of the new outfits I bought for our farm wedding – TOO CUTE! Those pants might be designed to be shorts, but they still fit : )

Foodblog-56

While I got ready for the day, Matt made a killer breakfast!!

Foodblog-6206

Still obsessed with French toast : )

Foodblog-6200

Our method involves soaking for about 20 seconds per side (2 servings = 2 eggs) thick whole grain Great Harvest bread in an egg flavored with 1 tsp each of vanilla and cinnamon and then placed in a nonstick skillet for 3-5 minutes per side.

I then topped this with a thick slather of pumpkin butter. My friend Xiomara works at Parkesdale Farm Market in Florida and sent us this as a baby welcome gift. It’s naturally sweetened and delicious!

Foodblog-6197

Also involved – pan-seared bananas, Chia Charger Buffalo Dirt and a sprinkle of coconut.

Foodblog-6199

Foodblog-6202

My assistants!

Foodblog-6207

After breakfast we Google Chatted with mom + dad! I think they would like it if we had a live web cam going 24/7 so they could see Mazen at all times : )

Foodblog-6208

Foodblog-6209

Some of us took naps

Foodblog-6210

Matt went off to work, and later I put together this lunch from leftovers in the fridge –

Foodblog-6222

Baby spinach, sautéed tofu, roasted squash and apples, pecans, honey, olive oil, salt. My favorite kind of salad!

Foodblog-6215

Incredibly delicious!

Foodblog-6212

When the mail came, I jumped for joy over the Downton Abbey DVD and jars of Barney Butter I ordered!Although I go through stages of nut butters, they all hold a special place in my heart. I get a craving for BB about once a year and just have to have it.

Foodblog-6228

A spoonful served with an apple

Foodblog-6233

Dinner tonight was a special treat from my friend Alice! [Thank you Alice!]

Foodblog-6240

She brought us fish tacos from the Whole Foods food truck. These were delicious! I loved that the fish was breaded – it had an extra layer of savory to enjoy. Stuffed with black beans, cheese, cabbage, lettuce, sour cream and a blueberry hot sauce (also from Parkesdale!)

Foodblog-6237

“Side salad” with the leftovers

Foodblog-6238

Foodblog-6236

I got in bed at 9:30pm and Mazen slept for FOUR HOURS STRAIGHT!! I woke up at 1:45 worried because I haven’t slept that long in nearly 3 weeks! But, my gosh, I felt so refreshed when it was time to feed him at 2 and 4 and 6 ; )

Another great post from the busy mom! What I am surprised by is how your portion sizes and meal frequency seems to be about the same as pre-pregnancy for the most part. I always thought that breastfeeding women ate non-stop and were always starving…looks like that is not always the case! Do you feel like you are eating more now than before the baby?

I feel like I’m eating about the same as I was when I was pregnant…and about the same as I was when I was running 5 miles a day (or the equiv.) So baby care has replaced exercise for the short term : ) I tend to eat 3 big meals a day (I’m not much of a grazer) but my meals are probably bigger and denser than they seem.

I’m am literally drooling over the photo of your lunch right now. I’m studying abroad in Moscow right now and salads with tofu are basically nonexistent. The food over here is delicious, but sometimes I just really want some spinach. Enjoy your day!

Ohhh I like the copyright on the photos. Very smart! Is this because a lot of sites are stealing your photos? How does that work, legally? I have seen your photos replicated on other sites and always wondered how that was legal.

I hate how hungry I can be when I wake up for those middle of the night feedings. I can’t go back to sleep because I’m hungry BUT if I do eat, it wakes me up and kind of rejuvenates me so I can’t fall asleep. Even if it’s 2 or 3 in the morning. Talk about a lose-lose situation.

My husband and I are in season 3 of 24, but I need to find a new series for me to watch. I am considering Downton Abby (althouth that won’t last me too long) or Friday Night Lights. You are all settling into a happy little routine! 🙂

I remember how hungry and THIRSTY I was during the early days of breastfeeding. Your eats always look so delish! I’m currently trying to WEAN my 14 month old son from breastfeeding and I feel like I should probably eat less than I have been now that our breastfeeding relationship is coming to a close. But I’m not sure how much less. Any idea (from an RD’s perspective)? I’m trying to be intuitive about these things but with all the breastfeeding hormones swirling around, my body’s natural cues are feeling a little “off”. (I’m now at my pre-baby weight so I don’t want to gain or lose…)

Oh and please don’t feel any pressure to answer this.. just throwin’ it out there.. I know you’re a busy mama!

I expect it will be hard! We get used to eating more and it’s hard to cut back. I think it just takes some mindfulness – ask yourself how much you really need to be satisfied, not full. You could also just increase your exercise a bit to make up the difference if you have the time/energy to make that work.

Thanks 🙂 Honestly, it’s sort of second nature now. The only time it’s annoying is when I have a leftovers container or the last of a yogurt container and want to just eat out of that to save washing a dish, but I use a dish for a better presentation.

Thanks for your reply! It makes me want to make my meals look better even though I’m not sharing them on a blog. I feel like I’m not naturally good at it though! 🙂

Start with a nice pretty plate or bowl : ) Just one might make it more special.

I love food presentation – it started when I worked at an upscale restaurant in college. I always try to deliberately arrange food neatly – it always makes me enjoy the meal more!

I see Bone Suckin’ Sauce all over the blog world! Is it an East Coast thing? I sure wish I could find it in Texas!

Mazen’s little overalls outfit and sleeping on Matt’s leg… OMG! So cute. Can’t even stand it. Those fish tacos look dynamite! Your friends have excellent taste. 🙂

Blueberry hot sauce?! I have never heard of such a thing but I am intrigued! Is it a sweet/hot combo? Do you taste the blueberries?

That picture of Mazen on Matt’s legs is adorable!

That salad looks yummy! What a coincidence-I was craving French toast the other day and made some for the family…I added cinnamon to the eggs and fried the toast in coconut oil. I topped it all off with caramelized banana maple syrup!

Dying over those crocheted (I’m guessing?) cowboy boots! So cute, and such a comfy option for a newborn!

Re: poaching eggs in just water, one of our Cook’s Illustrated cookbooks recommends adding some white vinegar and salt to the water. I think it somehow helps keep the egg white from spreading out all over the place. They also say to crack the egg into a dry measuring cup or small dish so that you can lower the edge of the dish right down to the water and gently tip the egg in rather than dropping it from up high.

I was so proud of myself for making french toast after a long run/workout – with homemade wheat bread, local maple syrup – until I came across yours. This puts all regular french toast to shame! 🙂 Love the food ideas, as I’m just starting my journey to eating better and am always looking for fun new ideas/recipes!!
