First Breakfast

Up and at ‘em at 5:02 this morning. I was planning to go to cycle class, but the thought of reading some of my newest magazines tempted me into switching to a cardio machine workout. I spent 45 minutes on the ET with Shape followed by 10 minutes of pull-ups, squats, push-ups, mountain climbers and jumping jacks. Then I was on my way.

Today in Food Lab I am conducting my final project experiment: Effects of Banana On The Sensory Analysis Of Oatmeal. I’m making whipped banana with these variations:

  • Ripe
  • Green
  • Overripe
  • No Banana (control)
  • Frozen ripe

We’ll see which is the best! My classmates will be analyzing the variations.

So I didn’t want to have a big breakfast because there will be lots of oats to eat in lab, plus other people’s experiments.

So it became the first day of smoothie season!

IMG_4688 (1024x768)

I finally got a chance to use up this packet of You Shake I received this winter. I only used half the packet though. It was 110 calories, 14 grams protein, 12 grams sugar, and 13 grams carbs and contained whey protein, cane juice, strawberries, bananas, vanilla powder (sucrose, vanilla bean).

I do not believe in protein powders. I think you can get plenty of protein from much less expensive whole foods and they are a waste of money, but I did really enjoy this mix. It did make my smoothie really sweet.

IMG_4684 (1024x768)

The rest of the ingredients included:

  • 1 whole banana
  • 1 heaping tbsp flax
  • 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk
  • 2 huge handfuls spinach
  • 2 handfuls ice cubes (which I dont’ normally add but am finding adds a lot to a smoothie)

IMG_4686 (1024x768)

IMG_4690 (1024x768)

Couldn’t taste the spinach at all – delish!

I have always been a skim milk drinker, but have recently tried soy milk for the first time. It is pretty tasty; however, I do feel like I’m not getting the same nutrients that I would get if drinking regular milk.

I also have some protein powder I am trying to use up so the mix is usually 8 oz low-fat chocolate milk, about 1/2 cup Fage 0%, half a packet of protein powder, half banana, a few ice cubes, and a couple handfuls spinach… so tasty and satisfying! 🙂

    Hi Kath,

How scientific are your food labs? I’m a scientist in my day job (oncology, auto-immune and allergy) but find I really enjoy knowing the chemistry of cooking and baking.

I like your husband’s blog with his formulas and such as well. Have a good day.

I made it with brown rice last night and it was awesome, and supposedly one of the healthiest grains out there! They say it can also be used like oatmeal, you should give it a shot!

Kath, I loved this unequivocal statement in today’s breakfast post: “I do not believe in protein powders.”

Me neither! Give me some yogurt, nut butter, or chickpeas any day. Thumbs down to protein powder! (Inspired by Mollie Katzen’s use of soy protein powder in her wonderful book Sunlight Cafe, I went through a protein powder phase, but I ended it when I realized that protein powder is definitely not a whole food and I could use other, more wholesome ingredients instead. I still love Mollie Katzen, but the powder and I have parted ways.)

    Happy Friday, everyone! 🙂

    BethT ,
I saw that too and was so pissed!!!! I totally got the shaft 🙁

    MeredithLeigh,
Two reasons why I drink soy milk:

    1) It’s cheaper (bought in bulk at Costco in shelf stable containers)
    2) It’s shelf stable so we always have it on hand
    3) I like the sweet vanilla taste

Otherwise, I love milk too! (But I do buy organic milk for our coffee so it’s much more expensive)

    Jess ,
Our labs aren’t that scientific. They are pretty low-key and we don’t have much in the form of equipment.

    Cara ,
I am SURE!! But if you don’t like spinach, pick another green like kale to try in it.

    Kristin ,
So long as your workouts are under 60 minutes, it shouldn’t be a problem, and you should have enough stored glycogen to fuel the workout. Fuel is much more important for long distances and intense workouts that are burning upwards of 600-700 calories.

    Organic Girl aka Ashley H,
SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for your vote too!!

    Kristina + Liz ,
It’s a Cuisinart Smartpower and I love it.

    susan ,
REAL protein in the form of yogurt/milk/alternative milks. Or cooked oatmeal. Or nut butters. Or flax. Or have something with it.

    Becca ,
I have tried amaranth! If you search for it you’ll find a porridge I made a few times for breakfast a while back. It was good, but not as creamy as oats 🙂
