Fashion Squared

I have lived in Charlottesville nearly 2 years and I think I have only been to the mall ONCE – and that was with Karen to pick up some maternity clothes this past winter. We walked straight into Motherhood Maternity and back out – I really don’t even know what stores are at the mall! I was quite surprised to find a nice Bare Escentuals store in there today! The Belk was also pretty nice. I will have to return to Fashion Square Mall when I get my figure back!

2012-06-13 16.20.45

I bought a dress for the wedding this weekend! In fact, I bought THREE dresses for my upcoming showers and the wedding. Maternity dresses are so comfy! Post on them and a few more of my purchases coming to BERF : )

Afternoon snack on the go! Straight from the purse stash.

Back on the home front, Matt and I made a dinner for Project Eat More Iron.

IMG_2101

A seared grass-fed skirt steak we picked up from the market last week. It was a bit tough (they were out of filets!) but still tasted good.

IMG_2103

Steak n pertaters. Matt’s famous rosemary potatoes, roasted in a 400* oven on a rack and coated in olive oil, salt, pepper and rosemary.

IMG_2106

Lastly, I was in charge of the salad. First I harvested some swiss chard and then I washed and sliced it into strips. I tossed that with about 2 tbsp olive oil, more salt and pepper, 1 heaping tbsp of capers and about 8 pitted, chopped olives. It was delish!

IMG_2108

We are off to watch Happiest Baby On The Block DVD and share a tiny bit of Jeni’s Ice cream!

I was low in iron during my pregnancies and needed to take an iron pill. My mother had me try Liver and Onions…my mother’s favourite dish…I figured if she made it, I may like it…sadly, I did not! I stuck with the iron pills!

Can’t wait to see the dresses! No one has mentioned anything about throwing us a baby shower. No one has even asked about our registry- I’m worried no one will get us anything and we’ll be purchasing it all ourselves! What’s the etiquette for sharing that information? Can (should) I throw my own shower? Not that we’re all “buy us things!” but baby showers seem like a standard thing…unlike a wedding shower, which we opted out of because we didn’t do a traditional wedding.

The problem is I don’t think my mom is interested in doing it. I also don’t have close girlfriends. Sure, I have some good friends, but I don’t know if they’d throw me a shower. Who knows, people could surprise me.

Me too Katie and it has been a struggle!! Not just because I am a pescetarian, but because of all of the dos and don’ts! Do eat iron with Vitamin C to help absorb it–eat shellfish, dried apricots, white beans, mushroom, quinoa etc. Don’t eat iron with dairy, high fibre foods, red wine, coffee, non-herbal tea, anything high in calcium (tahini, sardines, broccoli, kale, salmon etc.), soy products, cocoa, sweet potato, carbonated drinks, and on and on–they all inhibit absorption. Biggest surprise–spinach is not good (oxalate in it inhibits iron absorption) and you should eat the egg YOLK, but not the egg WHITE! Oy. Good luck with it, I know it will be worth it when I get my levels up but it is work!

Wow, to Courtney “I wish I liked greens!” I WISH I liked steak and red meat, because I have to make myself eat that. It’s funny, I rarely (once a year?) eat red meat of any sort and truthfully, I just don’t understand how people enjoy it. However, I grilled a skirt steak tonight as well as I was feeling like I had low iron, too, but was only able to eat a few bites. I had steamed broccoli with melty velveeta cheese on the side – it’s the ONLY way I will stand to eat broccoli. Wish I like steak, thank god for leafy greens 😉

Skirt steak should be marinated and sliced thinly along the grain of the meat. If cooked properly it is delicious!!

Unlike the olden days, I do everything I can avoid mall based shops these days…the parking, the crowds, the overwhelming number of options to sort through, and most of all the enormous time commitment. Stand alone stores and small strip malls are fine; our mega malls earn a big thumbs down!
