E.T. Says “Ouch”

I tried to find a good video of E.T. saying “ouuuuuucccchhh” but YouTube doesn’t seem to have included videos from the extraterrestrial. This will have to do:

The whole back of my body is sore today: hamstrings, back (lower + upper) and my neck. But my arms and legs are fine! I think it was that deep stretch class that killed me.

We’re running late today, but only because time warped!

Today’s Oatmeal

  • 1/3 cup half and half oats + 9 grain cereal (I’m liking this combo a lot), vanilla soy milk, water, salt, half banana, 1 date
  • A few tbsp AgavePlus granola
  • A few salted peanuts
  • Sprinkle toffee pieces
  • Spoonful Barney Butter

IMG_2639

Half cup for my sanity

We’re expecting 80* today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agenda:

  • Walk to grocery store and back
  • Pack picnic lunch
  • Meet Kelsey at park for picnic and studying for midterms
  • Go for walk in park
  • Enjoy warm weather to the extreme (rain is on the way 🙁 )
  • Pack tomorrow’s lunch
  • Fun dinner

E.T. used to scare the HELL out of me when I was younger, but now I can appreciate the wonder that is E.T. LOVE the analogy! I can imagine you’re super sore!

I do have a question for you: when you were in weight-loss mode, did you eat oats the way you do now with lots of toppings and stuff? I love my oats that way, but they’re just NOT POINTS® friendly!
    Thanks Kath!

    Hey Kathy,

I made that kale/sweet potato soup yesterday and was wondering if yours was really a soup or if it were more like a pudding–mine was more like a pudding? (I really liked my version, but I was just curious)

    Thanks, Vickie

    Hi Kath!
Question for you: I just purchased some Bob’s Red Mill 9 Grain hot cereal and am confused about how to cook it. The directions say to boil 3 cups of water and then add 1 cup of the cereal to serve 4 people. I am only making this for myself, but would like to combine it with my oatmeal like you have done. Do you think I can just cook it with the oatmeal (say for example, instead of 1/2 cup oatmeal, I can do 1/4 cup oatmeal and 1/4 cup 9 grain)?!? Do I have to boil water before putting in the oats and cereal or can I cook it like I do oats? Sorry, not sure if this was a clear question, I just thought I’d get your input since your 9 grain cereal seems similar. Thanks for your help!

Hi Kath! Enjoy your lovely day! I have a flaxseed question for you. I love to eat pancakes and sprinkle flaxseeds on them as well as maple syrup. I DO NOT like when the flaxseeds make them taste “furry” (does that make sense?) This morning after I microwaved my maple syrup for 50 seconds, I stirred in the flaxseeds and it was the perfect texture! Not furry! I know that you are not supposed to cook with flaxseeds because they lose their nutritonal value when they get too hot….so…..by putting them in my steaming maple syrup, did they lose their nutritional value? I’m confused….help! Thanks, Kath! 🙂

Hi Kath! Enjoy your picnic! 🙂

I have a tempeh question for you. I was at Trader Joe’s yesterday and bought some of the 3grain tempeh that you rave about. I tried some in a quick stirfry and it was yummy! But, when you have it in sandwiches, do you cook it first? Also, how long do you think it lasts in the refrigerator once I’ve opened it?

    Thanks!

I just finished an excellent book for my Anthropology of Africa class called Parallel Worlds: Anthropologist and a Writer Encounter Africa. It’s such an interesting book! I highhhhly recommend it. It’s a very easy read but very thought provoking as well. 🙂

    Mara ,
I did put lots of toppings on my oats, but not AS many as I do now. But my bowls were consistently 400-450 calories. I heartily believe in a big breakfast! When I first started losing weight I used to eat closer to 300 calories for breakfast and have 100-200 more for a snack at 10am. But my snack ruled my morning and one day I had a bigger breakfast and realized I didn’t need (or even think) about a snack, so I ditched it and put those calories to a better cause: oats.

    Vickie ,
Ours was like a soup, but a thick soup. I don’t like them brothy, but you could always add more broth.

    Katharine ,
Yes, I would just put it in the pot with the oats and cook it like them. That’s what I’ve been doing. Even the oatmeal containers say to boil water, then add oats but I much prefer the slow-cook method of adding everything and stopping when the liquid is absorbed.

    Fancy ,
I don’t really know if they lost their nutritional value or not in the syrup, but I would say if that’s how you prefer them, then eat them that way. It was probably not hot enough to do much oxidation.

    Jen ,
I slap my tempeh on my sandwiches raw! And the package says it will keep 7-10 days after opening, I believe.

    L,
I probably won’t have time to read it before Saturday, but if I come across it I will definitely peruse!

    Kath

I think it’s only flaxseed oil that you can’t heat, isn’t it? On the packaging of my ground flaxseed, it says that it’s suitable for inclusion in baking. I always add it to bread, muffins and biscuits, and I add it to my dry porridge oats before I microwave them in the morning. According to my nutritionist friend, that’s fine, so I’m not sure!
