Drunk On Coffee

It has been a long morning already and I’ve gotten no studying done!! But I did get in a great workout. When I got up this morning, I knew I needed to work out first thing to be as efficient as possible. But I didn’t wanna! My stomach was a little hungry and I didn’t have much energy.

this !
I told myself to just put on my workout clothes and go down and have some water and if I wanted to I could have breakfast first and go later.

So once I was downstairs, dressed with a big glass of water, I decided it made the most sense for my schedule today to get going and I was out the door. What really did it was visualizing myself at the gym, rushing home to make a noon conference call and then a 2pm appointment and decided I did not want to be rushed then.

SO GLAD I WENT!

I biked there and back (2.2 miles each way) and did 26 minutes on the Stairmaster and 10 of upper body lifting, lunges and abs

.

I biked through the golfers at the Quail Hollow Championship again. I think Tiger Woods was teeing off on my way back! All the cologne, aftershave and perfume smells that I passed were just AMAZING! Enough inspiration to make me use Matt’s “for him” shampoo and soap today 😉

When I came down for breakfast, I knew I was going to have a cup of coffee from my new OhNuts.com package. This was the Cappuccino Fudge – oh my!!!

IMG_5332 (1024x768)

It was so rich and chocolatey. I wish you could smell the screen!

IMG_5333 (1024x768)

I haven’t had 100% caf coffee in a while since I’ve been mixing Spring Blend with half decaf. This cup left me a little drunk on caffeine! I’ll have to cut it with some decaf next time, but if you like caf, this cup’s for you.

IMG_5337 (1024x768)

My other breakfast addition: dried raspberries! These guys are pricy, but I bet OhNuts’ price beats most other stores. I got hooked on them in Trader Joe’s Nuts for Raspberries trail mix.

IMG_5334 (1024x768)

IMG_5335 (1024x768)

So I knew I needed a quick breakfast because I am yet again running late (and this post isn’t helping!!) I didn’t really know what I wanted but my mind kept drifting to the granola with soy milk I had the other night. So I decided that’s what I should have!

IMG_5338 (1024x768)

A year ago I would have NEVER had a tiny bowl of high calorie cereal like this, but since that’s what I wanted today, and since I’m at home and don’t have to “risk” being caught somewhere starving, I decided to have it.

IMG_5340 (1024x768)

I did measure out a serving of the granola, because we all know how easy it is to go wild with it.

The mix:

  • 1/2 cup Mix My Granola (1 serving by weight)
  • 1/4 cup Uncle Sam’s (for some more fiber/protein)
  • ~7 blackberries
  • 1 tbsp dried raspberries
  • 1 tsp walnut butter (which I really enjoyed in the milk!!)
  • ~3/4 cup vanilla soy milk

IMG_5339 (1024x768)

It was delish! And when combined with my big mug of coffee, I was quite full afterwards. I’ll see how many hours it gets me. I’m guessing this was still a pretty high calorie bowl for the volume and I wouldn’t eat this every morning I don’t think, but enjoyment was top priority today.

GMAIL ROCKS!!!!! More emoticons!!!!

And my friend Vanessa from my Kenya trip just did a blog video on green tips around her house. I found it to be very entertaining and informative 🙂

I’m late, I’m late!! Biochem is calling!

I eat granola as cereal all the time, and you’re right…it is quite sad and how little you can eat for the calories. but it’s just so good that i keep doing it. It works out better if I measure it out and bring it to work, because if i do it at home, I know I”ll go back for more! yum 🙂

When I work out in the morning (which is usually every day during the work week!), I have just a 1/4 to 1/3 of ezekial bread and some peanut butter. I know you don’t really need a snack unless you work out for over an hour, but I feel like I need it first thing in the am to break the over night fast. I’m curious why you didn’t have something tiny if you were hungry. Is it because you were afraid it would get jostled in your stomach during your workout?

Also, so true about granola!! I used to eat it by the cupfuls when I was clueless!! Eeeek! Now I eat a little bit (1 or 2 tablespoons) every day as a topping for yogurt or oats!

    melissa ,
I guess I didn’t clarify that once I had a glass of water I was fine and not hungry anymore. Per usual, “hunger” was thirst (and procrastination).

Kath thank you for showing that it is ok to eat a high calorie breakfast. A long while back when I first started reading your blog, I was afraid to have lots of calories in the morning, but you have shown me that it is OK and it gives lots of energy for a busy day. You are right, no one likes to be ‘caught’ straving and without energy or a snack!

The coffee sounds delicious! I wish we could smell it.

Good luck with biochem! I took it in college as well, and I really enjoyed it when I had a professor who was enthusiastic about it and made it easy to understand. He asked thought provoking questions that made us think about the material rather than just repeat it. It was fun! Or I’m just a nerd.

I love all the crazy emoticans in this post!

I really try the visualizing thing, and it just doesn’t work for me. I really think it’s because I’ve never been a morning person – and I’m still just trying to get up before 7 a.m. I think it could work if I was a little more consistent with early rising.

great attitude on the cereal! how healthy and balanced and… normal! sometimes its so hard to feed our bodies what they want and not what our heads are telling us not to eat.
    have a great day!

Beautiful breakfast, love the huge blackberries!

And, I totally agree that it is actually a good thing to have a relatively high calorie breakfast. In fact, what I see that most people who are trying to lose weight do, is to eat too little all throughout the morning and early afternoon and that really sets up the perfect situation for nighttime binging.

your just like me in the sense of breakfast choices! i need high calories in the morning bc i always need the energy and it is my favorite meal of the day so why not indulge? i tend to eat over 500 calories in the morning and since i run later in the morning i always have energy because im still satisfied. granola is fantastic but it never holds me over…id need like half the bag haha

    Kath,
I’ve been reading your blog for a couple months now and really enjoy it. I have one question (and it will seem really random) but after your meals, do you feel really full (as in your stomach sticks out some but eventually returns to normal after digestion)? I ask this b/c your meals are so healthy with a good amount of volume.

    Kate ,
Sometimes. I wouldn’t say my stomach sticks way out like it would (does) after I eat 3 desserts, but it’s not flat either! I like to feel comfortably full though. If I am wearing a bathing suit, I do eat less 🙂

    Sara ,
1 word: variety! I would get bored biking in circles. I like having a destination and getting there, doing something, and then going home. Plus more variety in cardio is good for the body.
