Distracted

You guys know how much I love calendars, planning and to-do lists, especially in electronic form. Whenever I need ultimate focus (like I do for tonight’s double exams) I ALWAYS end up finding some new internet obsession that leaves me distracted. Yesterday I read about iScrybe.com in SHAPE. It’s a “planner to go” because you can print planner-like booklets and it’s got a to-do list and calendars and other features. Check out the video. It is by-invitation-only, but if you go in the forums you can request one. So I’ve been spending my time fiddling with that instead of getting to bed early, exercising and being productive! GRRRRRRR!!

Month view by iscrybe PocketSync by iscrybe

I’m testing it out, but I actually don’t think I prefer it to ToDoist.com, which is really my main format of organization. And this would screw up my shared calendars with the husband unless I got him to switch from G-cal too. And G-cal has way better color coding and that’s my #1 proiority!!

I AM A NERD!! But on to breakfast…..

I am planning to run right after I get home today since I stayed up a little later than I’d wanted last night. I’ve got my light BareMinerals, diamond (fake!) studs, and jeans on so hopefully  I don’t look too rough

 this !

I was craving regular ol’ granola plank – nut butter oats today

Oh gosh, I could spend all day trying to find the perfect planner. I have found that no matter what, the pen and paper method works best for me. For some reason, I always forget about my internet planners… not sure why since I’m on the computer all day!

    Wow… I think I just nerded out a bit myself. Haha 🙂

    Have a good day today!

Has anyone ever tried “toasted” oatmeal? Starting with a bit of butter in a sautee pan, add the dry oatmeal, toss & turn until browned, then add your liquid – boil, reduce, simmmer….. it’s so intriguing to me.

    Jenny-

I’m another Jenny and, unfortunately, I am of the “chicken with her head cut-off” variety. I know I need to be more organized. I buy calendars, I set-up the todoist calendar, I have a calendar on my fridge and yet, sadly, I’m still unorganized. But, my kids went back to school and I’m vowing to do better. I’m treating the start of the new school year as an opportunity to improve. I’m getting lunches packed the night before, I’m laying things out and I’m trying to clear-up the clutter. I work from home and it seems like everything turns into one giant mass of work-life goo. It’s hard to separate. Please send some of your organizaholic vibes my way. I need them 😉

I can’t seem to get into todoist, but I really like Remember the Milk.

Please let us know if you have further thoughts on iscrybe!

i love being organized. it makes me sad that i only discovered todoist near the end of my last term of school. it almost makes me want to go back 😉
luckily the org tools are still ridiculously useful for personal/home life stuff too. i haven’t really integrated my work stuff into todoist, but i probably will soon!

Good morning from Tuscaloosa, AL. Kath, I am getting ready to have to go on a business trip to Chicago. I would love to have some suggestions on some snack foods to pack so that I don’t go crazy eating hotel and restaurant foods. I was thinking about bringing some oatmeal packets and snack foods. I went online and saw that there is a Trader Joe’s there and very excited about going there. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Kath,

I was wondering if you are getting an M.S. even though you didn’t have a nutrition degree to begin with, or if you’re starting over and working towards another B.S.

How did you decide which would be better for you? I’m a little confused over transferring credits and what not… And which would be more beneficial.

I’m so old fashioned…I use a planner! That I write in! That way it’s always near at hand even if technology isn’t. It’s color coded and full of post-its, and even though it gets full, I love crossing things off and actually seeing them checked off the list.

Good luck on your exams, Kath!

I use Microsoft outlook for work + personal appointments PLUS an old fashioned planner for JUST personal stuff, but I am pretty sure that I am going to transfer it all to my iPhone in the next few weeks.

Wow…I really should look into some organizational methods…right now I just store my to-do list in my head!! Every once in awhile I make a list (like for groceries, or other specific tasks) but not for my days in general…my job requires me to remember lots of diffrent tasks throughout the day, but somehow I remember to get everything done! I just use visual reminders rather than lists…

I have a written planner for my school and job responsibilities but then I am a list maker! I make grocery, Target, Long term goals..all kinds of lists. It just feels good writing it down so I can remember it. I am going to look at these online tools though for sure!

Please don’t post any more calendar or planning links! It’s bad enough that I sneak onto your blog at lunchtime– my boss really doesn’t need me spending the rest of the afternoon furtively filling in calendars and planning my life through…um, March 29, 2009. Geez. You’d think all my planning would involve planning NOT to waste time planning. 😉

Talk about distracted — I just discovered Sparkpeople.com and have been officially distracted!! I am intrigued…but can anyone weigh in on pros/cons or preferences regarding sparkpeople, fitday.com, calorieking, or caloriecount?? I know the first two are free and calorieking membership has a fee — is it way better than sparkpeople? I’m interested in joining if it’s way better than the free options.

    thanks!!!

    Jenny ,
You might really like Google calendar – one calendar for each kid!

    haya ,
Like the kamut berries a lot. Like I said, they are all so similar that it’s hard to tell them apart. But I think wheat and spelt are my favorite.

    carrie ,
That’s all I’d bring – oatmeal packets and few whole food bars (LaraBar, nectar) and perhaps some trail mix. I try to limit snacking when I’m traveling because my meals are usually larger because they’re out of the home. But better to have some things to rely on in a pinch.

    Leanne ,
I am basically getting both a second bachelor’s and a masters. Once I finish the R.D. requirements (which are mostly undergrad with lots of overlap in the upper level courses) I only have 5-6 classes or so for the masters, so I’ll do that after.

    Amy A. ,
I like Spark People’s site a lot, but I think CalorieKing’s food diary is by far the most user friend and quickest to use.

    Jenn ,
I don’t have that ad and I emailed the husband to see if his computer had it and he said you probably have spyware on your computer and to run a spaware check (there are free ones on the internet you can use).

    Amanda ,
NO!! I wish it did and I would be in heaven!! I use my calendar for when things are DUE and my ToDolist to think about what I’m actually going to DO each day because I often work a week or 2 ahead.

    Kath,

Does ToDoist integrate your gmail calendar? I’m trying to figure out how that works, because I love my gmail calendar, but I’d like to have some sort of to-do function to put in school work and assignments…

    Thanks!

AMY A- i realllly like Calorie King because it has so many different features that those other sites don’t have. You can put in custom meals so when you make a recipe you can just log it once, write how many portions there are, and then just give urself one portion (rather than logging every ingredient each time). There is a lot of information and inspiration on the site, a great community fueled by personal blogs + forums, and a very user friendly food diary. It also tracks progress and builds reports for you which is really motivating (at least to me). I love seeing that graph line go lower and lower you know?
