Cereal Grains

DSC03459

I woke up craving cereal today! I really have always loved cereal, but it’s not as fun to eat as oatmeal since there’s usually a sense of urgency to eat quickly so the grains don’t get soggy in the milk. But I added fun toppings, and I this bowl did end up being pretty delicious. I’m not really that full, but hopefully it’s just hitting my stomach differently than oatmeal does.

DSC03458

The mix:

  • 1 small banana (on the bottom – the food least affected by sogginess so it gets the most saturation on the bottom)
  • 1 cup Kashi H2H (my favorite cereal ever – high fiber, low sugar/calories per cup, lots of crunch)
  • 2 tbsp homemade granola
  • Tiny bit granola plank
  • 1 tbsp flax
  • 3 walnut halves, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup 1% milk

With tea + milk –

Off to Organic, then run, then study, lunch, study, dinner, class!

Cereal totally hits the spot sometimes! Last time I had it, it kept me full a lot longer than I was anticipating! Good luck with your busy day!

OOh, are those bowls from CB2?? I found those when I was looking for new dishes… I really liked them, but was a little weary of getting the whole set!

Kath, I think Shape may mail out their subscriptions alphabetically. I’m down there in the alphabet with you, (i’m a “v”) and I just got mine yesterday.

The article looks great by the way!

Oh, and I did want to let you know that I went out the other day and picked up an issue of Shape. I also liked the article! You had some really positive, inspiring things to say that I’m sure others will really appreciate and learn from.

Whenever I eat cereal, I overdose on it. What is it that I can’t eat just 1 bowl of cereal!!??!!

    Kath, random question:

Do you keep your placemats set up at your table all the time? Or do you just pull them out when you are eating and then put them away?

I know this sounds wierd, but I can’t figure out the proper use of my placemats, lol!

I cannot have that kind of cereal to milk ratio. It needs to be at least equal, if not weighted more heavily on the milk side because then you have some extra to drink at the end of the bowl! Haha.

    Winning <3s with oats!

    This is silly buuuuuttt….
I started seeing a guy who likes to eat healthy but lives like a bachelor. So there’s no food in his place except for lots o’ oats!!! 🙂 Being a lazy bachelor, he was all set to nuke oats in a measuring cup of water. Unacceptable!!!!

I made him stovetop oats with raisins and walnuts since that was all he had. I think he <3s a bit more now! 😉

Anyway, I’m visiting this weekend and promised more oaty goodness, but the caveat – unlike me he doesn’t drink milk or eat peanutbutter.

Help me think of some good <3 winning combos. (I also have an hour drive to his place, so I need some poratable ingredients.) Ugh.

Dudes, totally weigh in! What oats would you want your ladies to cook you?

I found planks at Whole Paycheck this weekend. They are a little too chewy right now with my dumb root canaled tooth but I can imagine really liking them when I have full use of the mouth 🙂

I LOVE Trader Joes! Definitely check out thier huge selection of trail mixes. They carry Fage yogurts which I like to stock up on, and an awesome variety of semi-healthier snacks, such as papadums, rice chips, snapea crisps….I would check out thier wine selection (awesome) and also thier baking mixes…I like the no pudge brownie mix (all you do is add yogurt) and also thier fruit bars, dried fruits, and selection of luna bars, clif bars, etc. if you bring a cooler they have a lot of good veggie/salad mixes, as well as meats. One thing I noticed to watch out for is the lunch meats…they really don’t have many without sodium nitrite, which i try to avoid.

    good luck! Have fun!

fabbbulous bowl of cereal! I love how you analyzed how the banana gets to go on the bottom because it does the best saturated with milk… hehe genius, because most people slice the banana on top, right?

god i love cereal… and I agree Kashi H2H is definitely one of the best! have a great day Kath

I never would have thought to put a banana on the bottom of a cereal bowl, but I bet that works great. I’ll have to try it the next time I get a craving for cereal.

Melissa–stock up on organic milk, greek yogurt, dried fruit, nuts, and dark chocolate. They also tend to have pretty good prices on protein bars.

This is such an unnecessary comment but…how do you put so little milk on your cereal??? haha. I would definitely need a good cup for that much stuff. It looks yummy though.

It’s funny– I always assumed I was pouring a cup of (soy)milk on my cereal but then realized the carton was lasting a lot longer than it should– so I understand only using about 1/2 cup per cup o’ cereal.

However, I do have noted a third “taste quibble” I have with you, Kath. (1 and 2 are onions and chunky pb respectively.) I let my cereal sit for maximum sogginess. 😉 Hope I didn’t make you gag!

    ttfn300 ,
    Yep!

    Betsy in Pittsburgh,
Oooo I bet you’re right!!! Damn the Y’s!!! I’m ALWAYS last! Whenever people ask for volunteers to go first I always raise my hand 🙂

    Trina ,
Funny question! I usually keep the placemats on the table, and I try to change them every 1-2 week or so. Napkins get washed more frequently. I clean off the placemats if we’re expecting comapny, though, because I think the table looks better without them.

    jen ,
There are lots of combos on the Kath’s Tribute To Oats page on the right sidebar.

    Chelsea ,
See if you can crumble it up really fine – then it’s less chewy. Hope you like ’em!

    Melissa (the other one),
Greek yogurt, cheap cereal, Nuts over Raspberries trail mix, Raspberry jam, all nuts, goat cheese is cheap, tomato sauce is really good (I forgot what kind though), meringues!

    Christie ,
Horizon has some portable milks – 1% I believe. They are organic though, so probably pretty expensive.

    Brynn ,
I have a soggy cereal phobia! But without milk (like my college roomie use to eat it – just dry with a spoon!) is too dry for me.

    tfh ,
    Ewww!!!
