Blended Beauty

With two new ingredients in the kitchen, I decided to try the infamous blended oat bran this morning a la Polly and Heather!

9 Grain Mix from Great Harvest and Artisana Butters –

IMG_5801 IMG_5803

The mix included 1/4 cup oat bran mix (1 serving), 1/4 cup oats, 3/4 cup water, 1/4 cup milk, half banana, pinch salt. I cooked that until nice and thick and then stick-blended it until smooth.

Topped with Cacao Bliss (raw chocolate coconut frosting!!!) and raw almond butter –

I could give or take the blended oat brand, but that chocolate icing…..OMG!!

IMG_5808

Very filling too –

Spring Blend for the cloudy day –

Check me out at Savor The Thyme!

MY COLLEGE IS SO COOL!!!!

Kelsey and I are off on an adventure this morning. I think Polly and Heather would like this too!

I just came across your blog and I LOVE IT!!! I recently began a “lifestyle change” which incorporates excercise and healthy food (mostly organic). Its only been a few weeks but I needed to make this change. Like you, I was think in HS, packed on the pounds for college, lost it all for my wedding in 2006 and have gained it all back, plus some! Thanks for the awesome perspective and great looking recipes! Tonight, we’re trying your Okra!
    Take care.

Bran is the waste product of grain processing. It’s pretty hard on your digestive tract, and probably not fit for human consumption over the long term. I understand your primary goal here is keeping your weight down, judging from the amount of processed grains and starches you consume. Glad it seems to be working for you now. Just beware of the effects of an unnatural un-paleo diet over time! Check out the Weston Price foundation for more info. You seem to be interested in nutrition. 😉

Seems like eating oat bran is all the rage these days. I want in! But I don’t know a thing about it. Guess I could look it up, but I probably wont. Can someone give me a nutritional breakdown of oat bran. Why oat bran and not normal oats? Isn’t it more of a supplement you add to foods rather than just eating it as is? I must know!

    Heather,
Stick blending involves a stick blender:

    http://astore.amazon.com/kaearefo-20/detail/B0006G3JRO

    Allison ,
    Thanks and welcome!

    Stephanie F.,
Again, SAYS WHO!? Bran is not a waste product – it is part of the whole grain of the oat. It’s full of fiber and minerals. Ain’t nothing unhealthy about it. In fact, it may be preventative of a host of different cancers and diseases.

    Jennifer in Ca,
See above – it is the outer husk of the oat. You can cook it just like oats. It’s higher in fiber than oats, which also have the endosperm and germ, but some people prefer the texture. More like grits in my opinion.

    Becky ,
I know, I haven’t had one in ages!
