Beginner Yogi, Advanced Oaty

So I woke up a little stiff in areas from my run yesterday and thought I’d try YogaDownload.com’s Yoga For Runners. I prefer to do yoga with video so I know exactly what the pose is supposed to look like, but this one was audio only (although there is a PDF post guide to consult, but who wants to figure out which pose we’re on mid-class?). I started off well – in child’s pose! I know the names of some of them like Down Dog, Warrior II, Cobra from my DVD experience but we soon crossed into another language. I thought I was following along until she said “left arm” when I was on my right and had totally missed the switch and all and had no idea what the current pose was. So I stopped after 13 minutes. And realized I’d been doing an Intermediate level class! I would consider myself an Advanced Beginner, but this class was WAYYYY above me. Instead of trying another, I had a hungry husband ready for breakfast so we moved into a practice I am comfortable with: oatmeal

 this !

Coconut banana oatmeal

Today’s Mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats, vanilla soy milk, water, pinch salt, 1 medium ripe banana (we have an abundance of ripe ones so I’ve been using double the amount lately)
  • 1/2 crumbled Quaker True Delight Coconut Banana Bar
  • 1 tbsp toasty almonds
  • Flaked coconut butter
  • Spoonful Barney Butter

And a wonderful cup of joe –

I admit, I am a bit obsessed with cleaning these days. When I have the time, I like to keep things sparkling because it puts me in such a good mood. So today I cleaned the floors (again), vacuumed (again), cleaned the kitchen well and put everything away and dusted. Everything’s in tip top shape to start out the day.

Speaking of cleaning, a reader shared this article with me on why not to use vinegar. It does make my floors dull, so maybe the acid is doing some harm. Guess I’ll stick to Mrs. Meyers!

Cleaning Hardwood Floor With Vinegar – A Definite No

Today’s Agenda:

  • Trip to the gym for some good magazine time
  • Shower + lunch
  • Mall for my sister’s Xmas gift
  • Williams-Sonoma for some balsamic vinegar that Gran Bett gave us a gift card to specifically get (we got her hooked on the good stuff 🙂 )
  • Blockbuster to return last night’s movie
  • Probably another dinner on my own 🙁

Happy Birthday to my Grandmother Kiehne!!

Kath, I really like today’s mix of oats. I was debating whether to take a stab at the oatmeal today but I am holding out for your video tutorial on zesty.

I did yoga for runners yesterday!!! What a coincidence.

I agree that this one is a little advanced, but the pose guide really does help. I usually just pull it up on my laptop and keep it nearby to glance at every once in awhile during my practice, and definitely look it over once before I start.

    Have a good one!

I agree, that class is great – don’t totally give up on it. I know it sounds dorky but try listening to it all the way through before you do it the next time, maybe following along with the pose guide. It really is a great class for runners.

I am going to Italy in a couple weeks and would like to pack some snacks. Any recommendations?? So many of the “breakfast bars” I have seen have so many calories and carbs.

i remember back in the day before video and dvd workouts, people used audio tapes. i found a jane fonda workout tape of my mother’s when i was younger and listened to it a few times. those things are hard to follow along with! we are lucky that things have changed.

I wish I could get more obsessed with cleaning. Our house could use a little elbow grease. I love that you look forward to your workout and make it fun, “trip to the gym for some good magazine time.” Something to look forward to as opposed to just another chore on the to-do list.

So I read yesterday that Jamba Juice is rolling out their own line of oatmeal like Starbucks – Kath, your oats are taking over the world!! I’m sure your versions are MUCH better than JJ and the bucks though!

    Zesty,
The whole technique video is on the Tribute page!

    grace ,
    Great tips!!

    judegirl ,
They may be calorie-dense, but LaraBars do last a while if you nibble through them. Other recs are trail mix and instant oatmeal packets.

    darlene ,
    Check the lunch post!

    Gliding Calm,
I did!! Thank you so much!

    K,
Oh wow!! Hooray for more oatmeal options 🙂 Too bad we don’t have a Jamba around here, but good for when I travel.

I agree with Shelly about using the pose guide – when I started out with yoga the first time I did an audio routine I always kept my laptop closeby so I could pause and check a pose. And once you go through it once it’s much much easier. I like the runners’ yoga video. I think the Power Vinyasa Flow #3 or #4 are my favorites though.
