Beach Bound Bumble

Hey-oo!!!!

I’m in a bumbling good mood this AM – I’m sure you can understand why 🙂

IMG_6141 (640x427)

We set the alarm for 6:26 but ended up snoozing a little longer. I think we both needed a little more sleep! I didn’t really go back to sleep – just laid there for a while.

Then I got up and headed down the hall to the gym!

I have always wondered if having an elliptical at home would be worth the investment for me. I would never buy a treadmill because I can always run outside, but when I need some equipment for cross training, a home elliptical would be perfect. So living at Karen’s with the gym down the hall is kind of a test to see how much of an impact it would make.

And I can tell you – I would have NEVER gone to the real gym this morning (or anywhere that I would have left the house) because I would have needed a whole hour for travel and wouldn’t have been in the mood for the intensity of the gym but I got in a nice 30 minute elliptical session today and it was all because the machine was nearby.

But I will say a CON is that my workouts at home/hotel gyms are always less intense. I’d have to find a way to balance that somehow. I think when I have kids I will definitely invest in an elliptical at home!

Came back and whipped up some breakfast before we hit the road –

  • Oikos plain (~1 cup)
  • Quaker Oatmeal Squares (~1/2 cup)
  • 2/3 of a big banana
  • 1 tbsp trail mix
  • 1 sprinkle flax
  • 1 tbsp TJ’s Sunflower Butter

IMG_6135 (640x427)

IMG_6138 (640x427)

Soooo I picked up a few bowls at Target yesterday for $1-2. I needed more variety here than the white mugs!! I’ll donate these guys to Goodwill when we move – or keep them for future kids/pets!

IMG_6136 (640x427)

Sweet nectar –

See you from the Shore!!

I love the elliptical – even more so when it’s within walking distance 😉

Breakfast sounds amazing, but the beach sounds EVEN BETTER! Enjoy every second Kath! You deserve it. Can’t wait to hear about all of your sandy shenanigans!!

You’ve said before that you would never have a treadmill. I have one and I have to tell you just as there are times you would never go to the gym there are plenty of times I would never run outside or go to the gym. I live in Oklahoma so the weather is rarely conducive to running outside. Also, you can run at whatever time of day and safety is not a concern. I also enjoy exercising at home to get in my tv watching. I like killing two birds with one stone as I rarely have time to sit and watch a show. I also enjoy going to the gym from time to time, for a cycle or weight class but I definitely prefer to get it done at home. If you were exercising frequently at home I think you would naturally increase your intensity. Whatever piece of equipment you have it’s a great investment!

My home workouts are always less intense. I think it’s not having a bunch of people alongside you moving around too. I find that when our condo gym is busy I get a better workout–weird.

Everything’s better when you can walk to it. 😉 You should see how much $$ you spend a gym membership and whether by buying an elliptical, you’d end up saving in the long run. Might be worth it, especially if you ever have to drive to the gym (time, gas money, environment).

I have to give myself a challenge to make at home workouts more intense. We are definitely thinking of a treadmill since the winters up here are brutal and so can some of the summers.

Have fun at the beach. You always seem to enjoy all the fun.

When my mom quit the gym and bought an elliptical… she basically stopped working out. I think its because she feel like she had to plan it into her day anymore to go someplace and workout. It’d probably be different for you; it definately was for me! I workout so much now that we have a recumbent bike and a couple dumbbells. I honestly don’t think I would work out half as often if I had to go to a gym!

I have debated about getting an elliptical at home, but when you have kids, they beauty of the gym is that you can get a workout in without interruptions. I am not sure I would use it as much as I would want to if I had it at home.

Good point about having the elliptical nearby when you have kids. I’ve never really gotten into the idea of having home gym equipment because I get bored of doing the same thing over and over, but I guess if you’re only using it as supplemental, it wouldn’t be bad!

I got a treadmill this year and I absolutely love it. My hubby works odd hours, I work 8-5, and I have 2 kids. There is really no time in my day for the gym. During the cooler months (rarely in TX) I would walk at a trail close to my office during lunch breaks, but sometimes that’s all I had and if the weather was bad, I got nothing. It was really hard for me to even consider bundling my kids up during the winter this year and making them walk/ride in the stroller while I got a workout in. So, in came the treadmill and I can get regular workouts with it. I can walk/run anytime day or night and I don’t have to worry about travel time or getting “ready” to get to a gym. It’s one of the best investments for health that I have made.

Never say never! As a mom of two small kids, some days the ONLY way I am able to get in a run was on my home treadmill. This was especially true when I stayed home with them full-time and when I was training for races. I think if I were to invest in a second piece of home workout equipment it would be a rowing machine – they are relatively inexpensive, and give you a good total-body workout.

    Enjoy your well-deserved beach vacation!!

I think having an elliptical in your house would be so helpful. My friend has a treadmill so even though it’s at night (and it’s not very safe to go outside) he can still get his mileage in.

I’m actually motivated to go the gym and love working out, but whenever I house sit for a house with a home gym I am pretty disinterested and I rarely used my parents’ treadmill when I lived with them. I don’t know what it is, but I just prefer the gym–it feels like a fun part of my routine vs being at home which feels like drudgery. However, my dad (who is as equally motivated as I am when it comes to fitness) rides on a bike trainer several mornings a week in his basement while listening to books on tape and he can actually be more reliable with his workouts there than with the gym because he only needs to get up a little earlier and doesn’t need to get a ton of stuff organized. It was interesting to read everyone’s diverse comments and experiences with this! I’m curious what you will end up deciding.

Just chiming in to say that I DO have a kid, and I also have an elliptical at home! (in my basement). It is wonderful to have an easy workout option available right here in the house so that while my daughter naps or is sleeping at night (she goes to bed early), I can get a workout that doesn’t involve having to leave the house. Many evenings my hubby & I take turns getting out of the house for walks/runs after our little one is in bed – but it’s super handy to have the at-home option too. Start an elliptical fund now, you’ll want one! (-:
