Banned From The Kitchen

It smells like birthday cake in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been banned form the kitchen for a few hours and commanded to sit on the couch and read and drink wine, which I consider to be my ultimate choice of relaxation. The birthday weekend is off to a good start…..especially when I had THIS delivered to me!

DSC05135

Followed by THIS! I love, love, LOVE cake batter!!! I used to go to Coldstones to celebrate my birthday with a huge cake batter sundae, but who needs that when you can have the real thing!?

DSC05136  DSC05138

But let me back up….

This afternoon I finally made it to the correct library to VOTE!

DSC05125

I waited in line for almost an hour. I was prepared to wait 2. I know I probably should have just waited until Election Day because more polls = shorter lines, but it’s just so exciting to vote early and I wanted to be sure I cast my ballot and could wait in line when I had time, not if I’m busy on the Big Day.

As soon as I got in line, I glanced down to see this book looking up at me. Some of you might have heard of it – it’s about a woman who gave her husband sex everyday for a year for his 40th birthday. Well that woman just happens to be my former boss at my PR firm! I’ve been wanting to read it for a few months now and was thrilled to trade in my packed Cooking Light reading material for this while I waited. The line zoomed by!

DSC05134

After voting I made my way to EarthFare to say hello to the husband. I sampled my way around the store – tried 5 kinds of cheese and 2 wine samples as I was pampered by the cheese dept. again

 this !
– and had an organic oreo, chorizo sample and tried a Bumble Bar piece. Suffice to say the trip was my afternoon snack 🙂

My task this evening was to have dinner prepared when the husband walked in the door at 6:30 so that he could spend most of the evening working on this birthday dessert. I love cooking by myself (I actually do find it very therapeutic!), so I turned on Pandora jazz and cracked open some Reisling – it was just that kind of night 8)

DSC05133

Dinner turned out simple and delicious. I normally am not a huge fan of broth-based soups, but for some reason I was really craving broth. Since I knew I had to involve more beans with dinner, I came up with the following recipe after picking up some collard greens and mushrooms at the store.

Smoky White Bean + Green Soup

DSC05131

I. In to a hot pot:

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • Chopped large carrot
  • 2 gloves garlic
  • 1 pint button mushrooms

II. Once they are cooked add:

  • 2 cups chicken stock
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Half the juice of 1 lemon

III. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer and stir in:

  • 1 bunch collard greens, washed and trimmed
  • About a cup to a cup and a half of cooked beans

IV. When greens are cooked – eat!

Makes about 3 servings.

DSC05130

On the side we had crusty rolls broiled with a brush of olive oil and salt!

Glass # 2 for the couch 🙂

DSC05126

I’ve just been fed a small piece of cooked cake. Not sure why he has triangles of cake in excess, but guess I’ll find out soon enough! Photos in the AM 🙂 This is already starting to be quite the sugar + wine weekend. My only goal is to not consume so much of either that I feel uncomfortable or sick. This will be a challenge, but as of right this moment, I’m motivated.

Off to read more!!

    Hmmm…that husband is being mysterious!
I love cake batter, too! Well, any kind of batter really! You know if you join Coldstone’s birthday club you get a free love-it sized creation the week of your birthday?! I love free ice cream…and it’s big enough that the boyfriend and I can share when we go 🙂

That’s funny that your old boss wrote that book! I’d heard about it all over TV not too long ago! Sex everyday for a year sure would be a fun gift to receive 😉

What a great start to your birthday weekend!

Licking the batter bowl is almost better than eating the actual cake . . . well, almost!

I’ll have to check out that book too! 😀

Haha, as long as it’s awesome, it’s well worth it!

I am headed off to Chicago for FNCE (the annual ADA meeting) in the morning and won’t be around a computer on your real birthday, so I wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY! now.

I hope that you have an awesome day (and an even better birthday weekend!)… remember, you aren’t allowed to do any work on your birthday!

Sex every day for a year? Nice in theory, but I would imagine some … soreness.

And “ganache” is such a fun word!

I was also obbsessed with the cake batter ice cream at coldstone, but haven’t had it almost a year. Maybe for my birthday I will indulge in the treat, but that’s still not until February. 🙁

Sounds like an awesome night! You’re gonna have a great weekend 🙂

I just had acorn squash because your lunch sounded so tempting 🙂 I stuffed 1 half for me and 1 half for Bobby, but his had richer stuff (rice and cheese) so I got to eat the rest of his acorn squash that he couldn’t finish. I love it. The skin is great.

Yum! Birthdays are definitely the best, aren’t they?!

I wonder what the woman who wrote the book did about “that time of the month”…. I would be interested to know, unless he was okay with that. Sorry for the gross topic, just came to my mind when I think of sex everyday for a year. Let us know how the book is though.

Happy early birthday!!! This is your time to indulge so enjoy it guilt-free! 😀

Jess — “gave” is sounds pretty demeaning. I’m sure Kath didn’t come up with the term, though; I bet it’s what the author said.

Thanks 🙂 Wish I were there to join you at the ADA meeting. Maybe next year…

    VeggieGirl ,

    Elina (Healthy and Sane),
It’s actually not racy at all – it’s much more about life and intimacy than sex. It’s quite good. I can’t put it down!

    musicfan ,
The light cake batter is gone!?!? Oh no! I thought it was just as good as the real thing. Guess I didn’t get it enough for them to keep it on the menu 🙁

    Ashley C.,
They are not obligated to have sex during that time of the month. There are a few “rules” she established in the beginning. They also missed a few days after they mutually decided.
