Balls, Loin + Butternut

Back in college, Matt and I [and the rest of the SAE brothers] had a name for Wednesdays that got a little wild….Wacky Wednesdays.

I’m sure you’ve heard of ‘em!

Exhibit A, Circa 2003

[Note the back surgery brace!]

Tonight was a Wacky Wednesday!!

IMG_4891Blog

But first, Faith and I attended a free yoga class taught by a new teacher of the Ashtanga Yoga Cville school. The class was hatha style, and therefore reallllly slow. But we enjoyed it for the mindful practice it gave us.

After a freezing bike ride home…

IMG_4882Blog

Faith broke out her homemade kombocha for a replenishment!

IMG_4884Blog

Look at this disgusting mushroom growth! Surprisingly, it tasted great!

IMG_4887Blog

Our Wacky Wednesday began last week…when we tasted Winter Warmers at Market Street Wine Shop. This wee was Christmas Ales! We made the 1.0 mile trek downtown for the event.

IMG_4890Blog IMG_4895Blog IMG_4888Blog IMG_4898Blog

We tasted some delicious spiced ales this week:

Ridgeway Seriously Bad Elf (9% AVB) – Slight cinnamon-y. Light in body. Great flavor, and not too banana-y for a tripel.

Anchor “Our Special Ale” (5.5% ABV)  – 100% log cabin. Slightly smoky on the finish.

Delirium Noel (10% ABV) – Cheesy, like roasted parmesan. Sweet. Thick. Almost bittersweet chocolate. (We recently had this is Boston on tap!)

Scaldis Noel (12% ABV) – Bourbon, alcoholic, sweet. Like apple cider.

Gouden Carolus Noel (10.5% ABV) – Chewy, roasty, caramely. YUM!! (My favorite!)

IMG_4900Blog IMG_4902Blog

Back at Faith + Tate’s (after a freezing cold walk home) we put out some appetizers – hummus and veg and chips and crackers

IMG_4906Blog

And started to assemble Matzo Ball Soup!

IMG_4908Blog

Last week, they were making it for Hanukah (Tate requested it even though it was Hanukah!) and we had to miss out. So we made up for it a week later.

IMG_4909Blog

We broke into some of Faith’s fabulous new wines!

IMG_4913Blog

Soup!!

IMG_4919Blog

Loved those doughy balls!!

IMG_4920Blog

Matt and I also brought some Twin Oaks Tofu (Spicy Peanut Thai) to roast with some butternut

IMG_4912Blog

Butternut beauties!

IMG_4916Blog IMG_4921Blog

Tate seared some venison loin for Matt and me, as we had never tasted it and he just got a bunch from one of his relative who hunts. There’s a first time for everything!

IMG_4915Blog

The venison tasted like a tough steak to me – very good!

IMG_4925Blog IMG_4926Blog IMG_4924Blog

After dinner drinks – Faith and Tate have a best / worst influence on us!!!!

IMG_4928Blog

Chocolate and Port for dessert!? Couldn’t’ ask for anything more perfect!

IMG_4932Blog IMG_4936Blog IMG_4937Blog IMG_4940BlogIMG_4939Blog

Tomorrow we are expecting snow – and I’ve got a busy day with appointments for Karen and me scheduled. Hope we’re not snowed out!

Nite!

Oh matzo ball soup! Perfect for snowy, cold nights. That kind is pretty good, but I highly recommend homemade if you can get it. The Ales look yummy– I loved (and also recommend) Schlafly’s Christmas Ale which I tried last night. 🙂

My father-in-law just sent me a bar of the same TJ’s dark chocolate as a Christmas present. No, I can’t see through wrapping paper…but my dog sure can chew through it! The little bugger sniffed out the present hidden in the Christmas tree and ATE HALF THE BAR!!! I love my dog and all, but his stomach better be upset.

Hey Kath! We only met once, I’m Johnnie Jones’s wife, Shonda =D
He’s made me into a “secret crush” blog fan of yours– so now I have to “publically” tell you that I absoutely love your blog! Johnnie has been pushing me to start blogging, but I’m sort of clueless to how. So, I hope you don’t mind me following your style so that I can grow up into a “big girl blogger” one day–like you! My only problem is, I don’t feel like I have a nice enough camera.l probably shouldn’t let that hinder me, but It was your awesome pictures that initially drew me to your blog. Are you using a big “hot shot” camera or do you just have a really excellent camera on your phone?

Hey Shonda! I do have a hot shot camera, but I think you can take really pretty photos with a good point and shoot. Just use as much natural light as you can find and utilize the macro (flower) setting!

Project suggestion (that you could totally ignore & might already exist): reading this post a few others (like one of the Boston posts) you know quite a bit about beer/ale/etc. I know that Matt’s really the brewer, but maybe you could make a Beer for Girls 101 banner linking those posts? The reason being, I’m a wine drinker, but I’d like to know more about beer, especially interesting tasting beers/ales/etc. I know that there are other chicas like me who hate to seem ignorant (particularly when at an interesting Brewery or Bar) and are completely flumoxed about what to order. Of course, this guide might already exist, but I trust your taste!

My father, brother, hubby are hunters and we eat venison all the time. If it isn’t cooked correctly it is tough and tastes terrible.

It needs to be cooked in a very hot pan with some form of fat (as it is very lean) and very quickly, like two minutes per side. Best eaten on the rare side for ultimate taste and tenderness, medium rare is OK. Anything more than that and it will taste like shoe leather!!

And while it is a lean meat, our doctor tells us red meat is red meat.
