Bachelorette

It’s weird being all by myself this morning! The husband was up around 3am, showered and dressed in the guest room, kissed me goodbye and was on his way. I couldn’t believe I still had 2 more hours to sleep while still getting up at the crack of dawn! He is working at EarthFare later this afternoon with a break in-between. He’ll be doing a cooking demo on tofu tonight, and my friend Kelsey and I are going to attend! On his menu: MY BBQ baked tofu 🙂 , edamame, and a Tofu Peanut Butter Pie!

With the unusual morning I was running adrenaline when I got up at 5 and was off to the gym. I drove because I don’t like biking alone in the dark 🙁 Once there I did 35 minutes on the Stairmaster followed by upper body lifting with free weights. I did 2 sets of 15-20 of biceips, shoulder press, lateral shoulders (is that what they’re called?), triceps, and push-ups, all with 15 lb weights.

It’s been fun having the house to myself so I can make everything perfect! I did the dishes before I sat down to breakfast (only took me about 60 seconds) so I would get back up to a clean kitchen. And the pillows are perfectly aligned and everything’s in its place. it’s a good thing I do have a roommate or I might drive myself nuts living by myself!

We have had this box of Hodgson Mill MultiGrain Cereal in our pantry for over 2 years – I know that because we moved into this house with it! There was only 1 serving left so we’ve been saving it for a time when there’s just 1 of us home. Today was the day. I like this cereal, which is made from oats, oatbran and flax, but it’s not as sweet and creamy (or cheap!) as regular oats. But fun for a change. Today, though, I think the last bit was too old because it tasted a little stale. I put in just over the 1/3 cup serving (to use it up) with 3/4 cup water, 1/4 cup 2% milk, and 1 medium banana.

just so you know, 3 AM doesn’t qualify as the “crack of dawn.” that’s the freaking MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! LOL

i need to buy little pillows to straighten…. currently we just have a lump of standard pillows.

hey Kath, Glad to see your still upbeat as always. You make me feel so lazy as I just get up, shower, eat and get ready for the day…. you have so much energy – I wonder if there is a market for you to bottle that energy and sell it 🙂 I will take a few bottles.

    Love your breakfast!

Seems like you’re getting along alright 🙂 How many days a week does your husband have to wake up early now?

Breakfast looks good – and you can’t beat enjoying it with an issue of Real Simple. I have used a lot of ideas from that mag – I love it. Have you incorporated some of the ideas throughout your home? I’m always curious if other people use them.

ooh, tofu peanut butter pie? recipe please!!?

Not sure exactly what you mean by Lateral Shoulders… but I will give my attempt at an explanation in hopes of helping?

Lateral Pull Down- essentially works your upper back muscles , aka your “lats”….

( you usually sit, a bar above you on a pulley, and pull the bar down towards your chest. Some people pull the bar behind their neck, which is actually a bad technique because it utilizes neck muscles instead of back muscles- straining your neck and not strengthening your intended lats)

    – this lat pull down also tends to work your rear delts or your “shoulders” ( the back side of them)

Lateral Raise- essentially works your shoulders – aka your “delts” (the front side of them)

( when you lift yours arms from your sides up to parallel the ground ( either in front of you or out to your sides making a ” T ” )

I LOVE “Bent Over Lateral Raises”
( you sit on a bench, lean your chest weight onto your lap, lift dumbells up on either side of you like the T only sitting)

I love it because it ISOLATES your deltoids, your weight is on your lap so you have to really only use your shoulder muscles.

Let me know what you think!? Hope this helps!

Kath, I invision my 16 year old daughter being like you when she grows up!

She’s super organized, super neat freak (I could basically eat off of her bedroom floor!) and always leaves her bedroom perfect before she leaves for school so its all clean when she comes home.

She gets so mad at me when I empty the dishwasher, because it doesn’t bother me to put the gravy boat in the same cupboard as the drinking glasses.

All of a sudden I’ll hear: “Mom, the gravy boat does not belong in this cabinet!”

Hope Matt survives his long day!

I can honestly say that I have NEVER gotten up at 3 AM. Even when I have had ridiculously early flights, I think I’ve never broken the 4 AM mark. That is In.Sane.

I hope he loves his new jobs! Is the husband going to try to go to sleep at 7 on nights before mornings like this? Or just suck it up for those few days a week?

new runner, what kind of oats are you using? old fashioned? quick oats? a packet of oatmeal that comes in a box? are you using enough liquid? how long do you cook it? rolled (old fashioned) oats are done on the stove in 5 minutes (remove from heat and let them sit covered for a few minutes ….) hope that helps!

    Hi Kath!
I laughed when I read your comment on my blog. I normally am totally an icing girl ALL the way but the consistency of the icing was a little funny (probably from thawing?) and I just wasn’t feeling it last night. I’ll definitely be eating the icing in 11 months though 🙂

Glad you enjoyed your morning “alone”! I think I would be a cleaning/organizing freak as well if I didn’t have my husband in the house to calm me down ha!

Kath- I figure you are the person to ask since you love organizing. I am looking for an online tool which allows me to make an interactive meeting schedule. I know you use some kind of “To-do” software program. Can you remind me what it is? I am needing it for work.

    hey kath

how is running going with your foot injury? i have had some crazy issues with running lately (i’ve been a “runner’ (not intense runner, but consistent) for 5 or so years now, and lately my body is protesting. i am wondering how you cope with any foot discomfort you have when running.

also–i’d appreciate hearing tips/stories from anyone who has converted from “runnning” as their primary form of cardio to another sport (im thinking of switching to swimming or biking).

    Rose ,
Just 3 days a week and he should be able to sleep 45 minutes more when his “real” job starts. This is still training at the uptown location and is farther away and earlier.

    B_Hlthy,
DELTOIDS!! I always forget the name of them and think “lateral” because i lift my arms to the side.

    Biz,
She makes me feel organized just reading about her!

    Alex ,
He went to bed at 9 last night. He’s better at going on less sleep than I am, so I imagine he’ll just get 6-7 hours and then catch up Thurs/Friday/weekend.

    new runner,
I second Alison’s questions. I think it mostly depends on the pot type. We have Circulon and it’s amazing for non-stick. When I cook Quick Oats at my mom’s (all she had) in her aluminum pot I got TONS of stickage if I didn’t stir continuously.

    rhodeygirl,
Right, just time, HR and cals. I can estimate my distance pretty accurately with it based on cals since I burn almost exactly 75 per mile whether running or walking.

    Lindsay ,
    I. love. icing.

    Amy ,
Yes, it was passed down. I’m not sure how old it is, but it’s from my grandmother’s collection. I love how little the “bowl” is.

    ray ,
My foot has been doing really well. It’s been 3 years since my surgery. These past 3 years though, I have NOT been able to run much. My best advice is to not run when it’s bothering you. You’ll only set yourself back. It was really hard not to run when I wanted to, but it’s just been something I’ve had to accept.
