Are We There Yet?

IMG_7536

On our way to Bald Head Island! It’s my mom’s 58th birthday weekend, and the Original Four are coming together for a celebration. Cake covered with buttercream is in the trunk!!!!

IMG_7538

Kanz opted to stay home [although he sends his birthday wishes!], and Larbs’ Matt is in India on an MBA trip!

I left Cville early this morning and drove 3 hours to Hillsborough where I loaded into my parents’ Buick for the second 3 hours of driving. Love being in the back seat!!

IMG_7530

We ate lunch on the road.

IMG_7522

I made egg + cheese sandwiches for mom and me on Cville Crunch [Dad declined in lieu of fruit and yogurt] This is such an easy sandwich to make.

IMG_7524

Apple side dish

IMG_7525

And a diet Birch Beer – my parents always have a great selection of soft drinks, so I have one a few times I year when I visit. Love anything root beer related!

IMG_7526

I’m finding myself hungry every 2 hours these days. I snacked on trail mix on the ride down and again just a little while ago. This kind – The Hedgehog – is another from the selection coming to OpenSky. I absolutely loved the dried figs and their crunchy seeds and the pistachios (that I didn’t have to crack open!) inside.

IMG_7528

Plus grapes!

IMG_7521

One more afternoon snack…lovin’ stringcheese these days

IMG_7529

We’ve mostly been chatting the whole ride, which went by fast. I tried to do some reading, but didn’t get very far with constant questions from my mom : ) My friend Meredith lent me her favorite book, but I have to say it’s been hard to focus on the older writing style!

Three cheers for anyone who identifies the fabric of my bookmark!

IMG_7531

We missed the 5pm ferry but had plenty of time for the 6 to lounge in rocking chairs. We’re so lucky with this nice weather!

IMG_7532

Neverending hunger called for a snack box I brought from home [also from OpenSky!] Salted Caramel 479 popcorn!

IMG_7535

Although that excited the birds!

IMG_7533

And mom.

We’ve just arrived in time for a marsh walk, and Larbs should be arriving on the 7pm ferry before dinner.

Is that egg and cheese sandwich a fried egg? A classic egg sandwich in England is boiled egg mashed up with mayonnaise and served with cress which are little green shoots with a peppery flavour. Really good – give it a go.

Diet soda question – I thought I read somewhere that artificial sweeteners weren’t recommended during pregnancy. Is that like anything else – okay in moderation? (I always thought caffeine was a no-no too but I guess that’s not either from what my friends tell me.)

I don’t think drinking diet soda is ideal, but I also don’t think there’s any harm in having one every now and then. Same with caffeine (200mg or less is considered safe)

Hi Kath! I am a regular reader of your blog – LOVE IT – I guess I just don’t comment too often, though. I love looking through your bakery pics as well…all that fresh bread looks absolutely divine! Congratulations on your pregnancy, too! I have read the Scarlet Pimpernel, many years ago, actually – when I was in college and really liked it. There is a movie of the book, made in the early 80’s with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour and it is fabulous. If you are bored one evening and enjoyed the story, you should watch it. It’s a good one!

Hey, that looks familiar! 😉 I remember the beginning of the book being slow, but there’s a turning point after the ball (I think) and it gets more action-packed! Although what do I know about good books, I’m on an average of 1 every 6-ish months right now, haha. I just read The Help after Christmas (yeah, I’m behind the times) and really liked it. What do you recommend I read next?

P.S. Enjoy “some beach, somewhere” this weekend! 🙂
