All American Saturday Morning

It’s been a lazy morning thus far, but I’m all caught up on blog emails and comments! Woo hoo!

I started to get really hungry for breakfast around 7:30 (I got up at 6:30) and was planning on having a bagel this morning. However, I realized that I am probably having a bagel for lunch so I should have something different for breakfast. So I went with the same old, same old.

Banana oatmeal with brown sugar, flax, walnuts and almond butter – in a new bowl I got from Kohl’s yesterday for SUPER cheap!

dsc05892.JPG

With butter toffee coffee. My stomach was very happy with this selection – I’m now pleasantly full 🙂 This was about 450 kcal.
dsc05891.JPG

We’re planning to go to the gym late morning around 10:30 or 11. I need to get some studying done before then – but one more thing….

PSA:

Land’s End now has SIZE 2 PETITE!!!!!!!!!!!! For the longest time their smallest size was 4 for petites. Now that doesn’t make sense at all! I was browsing a catalog yesterday and saw that they now make 2’s. I’ve already been on to chat with customer service to thank them 🙂 Now I just have to resist buying anything…perhaps I can find something on sale.

Yes, I am a soccer mom to-be. I love Land’s End! And I love that you can return stuff to Sears and not have to ship it back.

I am also very petite and LOVE Banana Republic and J Crew’s petite selections. Some of the BR stores carry petite now and if they don’t they often ship for free. Additionally if anyone has a Lululemon (workout gear) they will hem their workout pants for free which is a fantastic deal and something I haven’t seen elsewhere. I also appreciate the free pant alterations at Nordstrom. Yes the clothes are pricier, but it’s worth it for jeans that are a perfect fit.

I too get excited when I find a line that sells petites!!! Yay for that!

Oh, and yes, I did mix in some strawberry perserves from Trader Joe’s with my Fage. Still not sure how I feel about it…given the price…but I have one more container…Steph (from CK) suggested I mix in honey…so I may try that with the second container!

Have a great weekend, Kath! 🙂

Speaking of getting better fits for body types… anyone have any suggestions/tips for those of us who are on the other end of the spectrum – taller than the average person?

I am 5’9″ and find buying pants frustrating, as well as shirts, because the sleeves are ALWAYS too short!

I usually end up getting BKE jeans from the Buckle, Lucky jeans or Silver jeans. Longer dress pants… now those are few and far between! Anyone know of where I could find a nice (not TOO expensive) place that carries these?

Maybe try “Theory”.. Their dress pants are extremely expensive but incredible quality.. I’m not sure if they have pants specifically designed for tall women, but you should check them out 🙂

    Kath,
I “whipped” a banana into my oatmeal this morning…. soooo good! Thanks for the great idea! If you don’t mind my asking, how many calories did you eat (per meal and snacks) when you were losing weight? I know you are maintaining now (which is so great!) and have probably added calories back into your diet. I would really appreciate it if you could break down your diet calorie intake. Thanks!

Just got in from a run and saw the post about Land’s End…I just got my very first cashmere sweater (thank you mother-in-law!) for Christmas, and I didn’t even that they sell the brand at Sears until I was at Sears last weekend! I am psyched! I am trying to get out of the Abercrombie/Old Navy/AE wardrobe and into more simple, classic stuff. I’ve gotten some great bargains on tops and a few pairs of pants from Talbots Petite (I’m 5’4) in the past year, I like Ann Taylor Loft but they’re pricey. Banana makes great stuff, but EVERYTHING always seems to be hand washable or dry clean, I hate that! Also, Eddie Bauer makes some simple but classy tops and even bottoms as well. Can ya tell I love clothes and like to shop?! 😉

Hi everyone! Quick question for Kath and anyone else who can help me out. I’m starting weight watchers with a friend next week…she’s getting married in October and I have about 25-30 lbs I’d like to lose before the wedding. Do any of you guys do WW? Has it worked for you? Is it safe from a nutritional standpoint? I’d truly appreciate any feedback you can give me. Thank you so much!

One more suggestion. Level 99 brand jeans are really high quality and a great fit. On me anyway! I’m 5’9″ as well. I’ve bought mine at anthropologie, where I find most of their brands are long, both jeans and pants. Their clothes are pretty expensive, but everything is such high quality and the fit can’t be beat. Good Luck!

I’m also trying to drop 30-40 lbs/2nd honeymoon as incentive reward. My friend said weightwatchers was great for keeping it off long time. They use points system but I don’t know about nutrition. I’m going to try zone diet per my doc. Hey Kath. Do you find the Lands End clothing runs true to size? Just curious. I think petite tends to be equiv of one size smaller in the regular. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I do WW and have lost 35 pounds in the past year. I have 2 pounds left to go. It is a wonderful program and if you use the points system wisely it is very healthy. I love this blog to get healthy meal ideas – I just cut back where I need to. Good luck!

K–Mel read my mind. I’m 5’7″ but I have a 33.5″ inseam and ridiculously long arms. The Gap and Ann Taylor Loft both have a good selection for those of us who are long-limbed (if you don’t have luck in the stores, try online). If you happen to have a Gap Outlet store near you that’s my favorite place to buy pants (cause I can usually get long pants for a bargain!).

    Liza,
I’m so glad you like the pancake!! Although I am working to maintain my weight now, my goal now is to lose some, gain some. I eat less calories than I need to fully maintain my weight on my normal days with the assumption that I’ll be over some some days each month (sometimes by a lot!) and it will balance out as maintenance. So I basically eat a little lower than maintenance when I can so I can eat higher calories on occasion. It’s like a wave with a straight line through the middle. So I really haven’t changed much since I stopped losing other than allowing myself to splurge more frequently. On average, during weight loss I ate about 1800 kcal and burned about 500-600 through workouts and activity. But remember everyone is different and what worked for me might be too much or too little for you.

    KellyA,
I think Weight Watchers is a great method of portion control because it teaches everything in moderation and that by eating whole foods and lots of fresh produce you can eat more than by choosing packaged snacks. I think from a nutritional standpoint (and remember this is just my personal opinion) that it’s a great approach if you are eating healthy, but those women who eat all their points on 100 calorie packs are probably missing valuable nutrients. Good luck with your weight loss!

    Kim,
I find Lands End sizes to be pretty true, but if anything they’re bigger rather than smaller. Definitely not smaller. I love how they will hem any pants for you! The online customer service chat is also very helpful for figuring out what size to order – I’ve used it in the past.

    KellyA,

As far as WW and exercise: I did begin an exercise program at home. I started easy with DVDs (Walk Away the Pounds then The Firm) and bought a treadmill (so worth it if you have room). Now it’s mostly treadmill or outside jogging, stationary biking or DVDs in a pinch. So yes, exercise has played a MAJOR roll in the weight loss. I think it took losing a few pounds to become more comfortable working out.

What Kath said about choosing the right foods is correct. If you don’t balance your diet and fill up on 100 cal packs instead of whole foods you’ll not only be hungry and unhealthy but you’ll probably gain it back too! Good Luck!

I’ve noticed that you don’t really eat eggs. Is this due to personal tastes, or for nutritional reasons? And if it is b/c of nutritional reasons, what are they? Thanks!

    Katie,
No reason other than I prefer whole grains at breakfast like oatmeal and cereal to eggs. I need to remember to eat them more at other times of the day. Maybe I’ll hard boil some this afternoon for my lunches! I eat them in frittatas and omelets when I have those.

    L,
I count backwards from my wake-up time 7.5-8 hours to determine what time to go to bed, but I’m usually asleep by 9:30 on the weekdays and 10:30 on the weekends.
