A Yogurt A Day

Worked along…..and headed straight to the gym this afternoon.

No crumb left behind! Second to the Vega Vibrancy Bars, these Fruition bars are my favorite.

IMG_3491 (640x427)

It was weird going to my gym in work clothes and in an automobile. I felt the need to do something different, so I went to the upstairs cardio area. Who wouldda guessed that time would fly in a different setting! 30 minutes on the ET and 20 on the Stairs were over in no time. And then I did 10 minutes of weights – 3 sets of 2 muscle groups. It was a great workout!

I came home to find my house had been seized by an army of Voskos yogurt!!

IMG_3472 (640x427)

Literally!! One of every kind and flavor to test out. I LOVE greek yogurt. If I had to pick one food to live on forever, it would be a tie between oatmeal and greek yogurt. It’s so filling, so versatile, so delicious. I’m excited to test out yet another brand and glad to see the shelves filling up with more and more varieties. Flavors of Voskos include: Wild Blueberry, Wild Strawberry, Honey, Honey Vanilla Bean, Blended Exotic Fig! Plus a variety of non, low and full fats in both conventional and organic.

I will be eating a yogurt a day for a long, long time!

IMG_3469 (640x427)

My package included a few coupons for free yogurt so I’m sharing the wealth with two lucky readers. Email [email protected] OR Tweet @KathEats with #KERFEatsVoskos and I’ll pick two winners to collect 3 coupons each tomorrow.

Dinner tonight was a Meat Treat!!

IMG_3501 (640x427)

Matt and I baked BBQ chicken!! We both agreed that meat felt like a treat – how it should be! I had been craving chicken on the bone and bought a breast and a leg (LOCAL chicken!) from EarthFare this weekend. We marinated it in pre-made BBQ sauce and baked it until our meat thermometer said “Your Food Is Ready.” I served myself this whole breast for photography aesthetics but only made my way through about half. It was moist and delish!

IMG_3506 (640x427)

On the side we sauteed some frozen okra, corn and fresh tomato in cooking spray along with Old Bay, salt and pepper. It was so good with the Old Bay! And it’s allllmost OKRA SEASON! I love okra so much. One of my very favorite veggies – in fact, it might be my fav!

IMG_3502 (640x427)

Toasted hunk of Dakota. For < a week old, this guy was still quite good!

IMG_3503 (640x427)

Dinner was so nice and filling.

IMG_3498 (640x427)

Table In A Bag rockin’ it!

IMG_3496 (640x427)

Off to chillax.

I echo other’s and your own love of greek yogurt – I am new to the US (from Australia) and had to wade through many brands before finding The One (or in this case The Two) – I should have read your blog first as you recommend the two new loves-of-my-life, Fage (cherry flavour) and Oikos (raspberry flavour). Look forward to hearing about Voskos!
Okra is new to me – you have such divine taste I simply must try it now, its on the shopping list as we speak…

Do you know what the nutritional stats are on okra? I imagine they’re less nutrient dense than leafy greens but more-so than starchy vegetables like peas. I was just curious if you know what sort of vitamins and minerals are in them. My favorite way to eat them is in pickle form! Probably not the healthiest, but oh-so-yummy.

Wow, too bad they still don’t have Greek Yog where I live (or that cool packages like that don’t come in MY mail!) Have fun choosing flavours! 🙂

I’m curious about your “okay-ness” with milk and cheese but your definite deliberate desire to cut back on the amount of meat. If I had to choose one to give up, taste-wise it would be the meat but nutrionally…I think I’m more convinced that meat is more true to what hunter-gatherers and other cultures eat as opposed to milk and cow products. I don’t plan to give up either but I’m ultra curious on why you have the order of nutritonal “blessings” in the order you do. 🙂

Anyone else please join in too!

I’m pretty sure it has to do more with ethics (sustainability, humane animal practices) than nutrition on that one. Or so I gather.

Well that depends on how far you go back. As soon as animals were domesticated, humans began using their….hmmm how does one say it? Byproducts?! for nutrition. Milk, eggs, yogurt, cheese and butter all have high quality protein and vitamin B12 (two things humans really needed) plus a host of other nutrients. So nutrient wise, I think it’s just as good. I am of European decent and Europeans especially, due to the cold weather and their vitamin D deficiency risk, evolved to rely on cow’s milk for nutrition. I also feel that using animal products is a bit more gentle than killing them for their actual meat – it’s more of a partnership with the animal. So in my mind, dairy products are a compromise for eating meat. That said, I do believe in eating meat and think of it as a nutrient packed treat.

That is so, so helpful and very logical. Thank you, Kath.
And you are right; even though “at one time” humans may not have eaten animal products (I’ll leave off the “by” – sounds nicer, he he), we are now adapted and used to it. Perhaps even dependent on it…?

        Thanks again.
