You are here: Home / Charlottesville / a-mazen weekend

January 23, 2013

a-mazen weekend

Aunt Larbs and Uncle Matt came to visit us this past weekend. We had a blast eating and drinking (per usual) and keeping Mazen at the center of attention.

Foodblog-2656

They arrived late on Friday night, and Matt and I had pizzas underway.

Foodblog-2599

Whole wheat crust with two kinds of cheese.

Foodblog-2596

One with shitake mushrooms, lamb sausage, tomato sauce and fontina

Foodblog-2601

And the other with veggies and homemade mozzarella

Foodblog-2608

Salads on the side!

Foodblog-2607

We all shared this beer, which is now on my top 10 beer list. It was incredible!!

Foodblog-2603

Saturday we enjoyed French toast, went running in shifts and came back to a make-your-own lunch bar with everything in our fridge

Foodblog-2622

Our afternoon was spent wine tasting –

Foodblog-2650

We went to Stinson first and really enjoyed their wines

Foodblog-2627Foodblog-2629Foodblog-

Matt and I bought the Sugar Hollow Red

Foodblog-2635

Foodblog-2646

Next we went to White Hall (our first visit there) and were blown away by the wines!

Foodblog-2696Foodblog-2688Foodblog-2689

Matt and I bought the Chardonnay, Cab and Petit Verdot, which was our favorite

Foodblog-2690Foodblog-2702

Sleepy head napped most of the visit but then came out to play!

Foodblog-2628

Foodblog-2678

Larbs has been wanting to go to Zocalo for YEARS and we made it the highlight of this trip. We got the usual for dinner: the fritters, scallops and relleno pepper (my favorite entrees in town!) and threw in a wild card this time: the rockfish.

Foodblog-2705Foodblog-2709Foodblog-2708Foodblog-2707

Larbs actually liked the scallops and their carrot-vanilla sauce the best!

Foodblog--2

The next morning:

Foodblog-2727

Brunch at Commonwealth! Our favorite brunch spot in town.

Foodblog-2730

I had the lobster and cod cakes eggs benedict, which were amazing. Salad on the side

Foodblog-2734

I gave one of my stacks to Matt in exchange for some of his entrée – the Caribbean Veggie Benedict

Foodblog-2732

Another amazing few days of food.

And another a-MAZEN weekend!

That pizza looks amazing! Any tricks (from you or matt) for tossing the dough? I’m always tearing it.

    Reply
    • Matt says

      January 23, 2013 at 3:56 pm

The trick is that you really don’t have to do the stereotypical flinging and swirling! Get each pizza kneaded into a dough ball and let it relax for 10-15 minutes. Use a rolling pin and a lightly floured surface to get it started. If you get to a point and it’s really springy then feel free to let it relax again for 5min. Once it’s maybe 75% the size you want, you can pick it up and let it droop over the back side of your hands. Use gravity to stretch the edges, while pulling your hands in opposite directions (lightly!) to stretch the interior of the pizza. Rotate slightly and keep doing this until it’s the desired size. If it feels like it’s going to rip, it is! Just try not to put any more stretch on an area that feels too thin.

    Hi Kath,

I have a question about tuna. I normally buy the low sodium kind (I eat the entire 120 gram can in one meal for myself). But I could only buy regular tuna today. The ingredients are : skipjack tuna, water, and salt. And the sodium for the entire can is 300 mg…is that still a CLEAN, healthy , real choice? I hope so…

I also eat a lot of fish (mainly sardines and salmon, also halibut, cod, and tuna occasionally …usually 5 nights a week. Too much?).

    Reply
    • KathEats says

      January 24, 2013 at 8:15 pm

I think that amount of sodium is fine if you don’t have a clinical reason to watch it. 5 nights a week sounds like a lot..I’d go with every other night Max, but that’s just my personal opinion of variety. Some populations do eat fish daily
