What A Day For A Daydream

And yoga and coffee!!!!!!!!!!!

KERF French Presses

[And when I say at the end “I won’t ever go back to French press” I obviously mean drip coffee!!]

Speaking of Open Sky, I have some fun gift certificates to give away! FIVE people will win gift certificates to get TWENTYFIVE $$dollars$$ off a $50 purchase! [And not just in my store – all of the stores].

Leave a comment to win – and extra love if you say what item you’d want to purchase 😉

***

I was up at 5:30 this morning to meet Emily for yoga at Y2Yoga. We wanted to get in our weekly session but she’s gone on Sunday, so we moved to today – even though that meant early, early!!

Before I left I had a peach Fruition bar (made by Probar). I really love these bars. They are the perfect portion size and calorie density for a light snack and they have chia seeds embedded in them that make them really crunchy. And the flavors are spot on for my palate – not too fruity-tart and not too dry.

IMG_9240 (640x427)

Driving to yoga early this morning was not the same as driving to the gym. I was in a much better mood!! Probably because I was really excited for the class. I just love hot yoga!!! Here’s the studio entrance before sunrise…

photo

Class was…awesome. Obviously! We did a 60 minute vinyasa class and I felt like I really have improved on some of the poses. I walked in feeling stiff from yesterday’s Sculpt class and left feeling like I’d had a massage.

Emily is a big runner and we haven’t run together yet, so we ended our date with a 3.5 mile loop around the neighborhood. It was GORGEOUS out – misty, 60* with falling leaves. What a wonderful way to start the day!

On my ride home I was listening to the oldies station and What A Day For A Daydream came on. I felt the song was very appropriate for my day and whistled along 🙂 Check out this You Tube video of the Lovin’ Spoonful in action. Can’t you just see how he would have been soooo dreamy back in the day!?

Once home and showered I made the coffee video and a yogurt bowl to go with it. My yogurt bowl featured a new cereal by Bear Naked they sent me to try.

The facts (click to enlarge)

Its so gorgeous out I took breakfast outside for a modeling shoot (although I carried it back in to dine)

  • ~3/4 a cup of Oikos
  • ~1/3 cup pumpkin
  • Cinnamon
  • TJs Pumpkin Butter
  • Drizzle maple
  • ~1/2 cup Bear Naked
  • Smidge of Maranatha on the spoon

I actually wasn’t that crazy about the Bear Naked cereal. I think it’s just my palate though. The flavor was Cranberry Raisin, which I usually like, but there was something in it that I didn’t love. I did love the little clusters and seeds. You know – it might have been the pumpkin seeds that I didn’t love. Sometimes they are too savory for me. I bet the Banana Nut flavor is awesome. I also think the cereal is quite calorie dense at 200 calories for 2/3 a cup. I’m guessing that’s the seeds in there, but I will probably use it more as a topping than a bowl-filler.

TWO RAVES

OMG – SCRUBBING BUBBLES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those of you who recommended these, I picked some up recently and am EVER so impressed!!! Our shower floor was so coated with grime we were considering having it refinished before we put our house on the market. Our realtor even suggested a whole next shower stall! Well the scrubbing bubbles made that shower SPARKLE

this !

Windows Live Movie Maker – best movie maker I’ve ever used!!! Not sure if it’s only a Windows 7 version or for anyone to download, but highly recommended! SO user friendly with all the effects and stuff.

Not sure what’s on the agenda next. I have to get my car inspected 🙁 Might do another NERD KERF video! And Matt and I have a really fun date planned this evening!

I’m with you on the Bear Naked cereal, thought I do like the Banana Nut. It’s high calorie an I find the Bran Flakes are SUPER hard. They hurt my teeth. I got a small sample packet in the mail and ended up divided it into like 4 servings on my yogurt.

    HEY KATH!

I am a barista here in NYC at a place called Jittery Joe’s where we do only/all FRENCH PRESS COFFEE everyday! It’s what we like to think makes us special in this city of unique coffee cafes. That being said, I watched your video about how you make your french press coffee and I thought I would throw out a few tips that would improve your daily cup o’ joe.

    1. Store your coffee in an opaque air tight container. Both light and moisture help to ‘stale’ coffee faster…no good! I am glad to hear you don’t store our coffee in the freezer now, that always kills me, lol!
    2. To be exact, the water you use for french press coffee should be around 204 degrees for the perfect brew. But that doesn’t concern me as much as the way you pour the water! When pouring the water from your electric tea kettle into the french press, go in a circular motion around the edges of the press while vigorously moving the press in a circular motion. This helps to EVENLY extract the grounds for optimum flavor…very good!
    3. Also, you want to stir the bloomed coffee (yay for correct terminology!) one minute after pouring the hot water, so wait 30 more seconds and you will be good to go!!
    4. And lastly, after you stir the coffee one minute in, put the french press lid on the press (obviously don’t press down yet) because at this point all of the gasses have escaped and leaving the top off lets too much heat escape and again, interferes with extracting the coffee’s full flavor.
    5. Oh, and yay for slow pressing!

Alright, well I hope you try those tips tomorrow morning, and perhaps you will love your cup of coffee EVEN MORE in the AM (if that is even possible, haha).

    xoxo, Simone

Hi Kath! I love my new french press too! So much more fun than just drip coffee. One tip that I found that I really is preheating the french press pot. I fill it with hot water from the tap and let it sit while the water boils. That way the temperature doesn’t drop when you add the boiling water to the cold glass pot and let it sit for 4 minutes. Just wanted to pass it along!

I’m wondering why you’re not supposed to store your coffee in the freezer–can anyone enlighten me?
If there’s any left over in my grinder, I store that in an opaque plastic container, but the whole beans or any unopened coffee bags always go in the freezer at my house. Where’s the best place for them?

    Reply
    • Simone @ P:T says

      November 20, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Because like baking soda, coffee absorbs odors and so when you freeze the coffee or store it in the fridge, etc., coffee absorbs the odors from the fridge/freezer making for a not so tasty cup o’ joe. You should store ALL of your coffee whole bean in an opaque, air tight container and only grind RIGHT BEFORE you go to make your coffee. This is because ground coffee goes stale in appx. 1 minute so unless it is hit by the water right away, you aren’t going to get maximum coffee flavor from that particular extraction. I know it’s time consuming, but in the end, you will find that using freshly ground coffee EACH time will actually SAVE you money because your coffee will taste STRONGER and BETTER meaning less beans per cup. Hope that helps!!

Thanks! I definitely grind the amount I need most of the time, but sometimes I overfill the grinder and have a little extra. I haven’t noticed anything “off” about my coffee beans from the freezer, but now I am enlightened!

I am also a huge fan of the french press, and I’m jealous of your cute green one! I read somewhere that it’s not good to stir the coffee with a metal spoon since it could damage the delicate glass of the beaker. I usually use a wooden chopstick to stir mine and it works great.
I am eyeing that pizza stone in your OpenSky store. I love making my own pizza, but have trouble getting a nice crispy crust. Having a pizza stone would definitely help!

I’d love the Chop,Chop Bamboo board! I have two cutting boards right now. One is from the dollar section of Target, and our knives have cut through it, which kind of defeats its purpose. The other works fine, but is about 5″ x 4″ so is way too small for most prep work!

Wow, I’d love to win one of those. There are a lot of things I like on there… the spice rack would be really sweet. We have been putting ours in a cabinet above the stove, but I’m starting to see that it just really doesn’t work. My wife can’t reach them, and we can barely see anything except for the front row or two (even with a fancy shelf organizer).

I also really like that mandolin… I just put one of those on my Christmas list actually. 🙂

I don’t get it though, it seems like a much simpler process to me. Plus, cleaning coffee makers is a paaaain, and they take up a lot more counter space.

Thanks so much for the tips! And I’m glad i got so many things right 🙂

    Emmalinda,
I think it has to do with droplets of water and ice…I’m not sure! You’re supposed to store it in a cool, dark place.

    Jessie,
    Chopstick is a great idea!

    Naomi,
I’m always up for good coffee!

I would love that french press! It’s also my favorite color and I’ve been wanting one for a while. I do have one question… do the coffee beans have to be ground differently than if you use a paper filter in a coffee pot or does that not matter?

      Amy,
They are supposed to be a little more coarsely ground, but I just use my coffee grinder as I would have for drip and it works fine. And I use ground coffee from stores. So I guess no!

if i was the lucky winner,
i’d put the certificate towards the NUTZO –
    nut butters rock my world,
and this one’s not available anywhere in canada,
    so i hate missing out.
dying to taste it and add it to my nut butter gallery!!

Kath- so happy to hear your voice (which is surprisingly northern sounding!) and see how you make your daily “KERF” (a nickname for coffee in our house!!).

I too like to add hot to hot and often nuke my FFmilk before making my morning cup of java. We currently have a Keurig, which is awesome for some instant coffee gratification, but I must admit, I have some seriously bad feelings about filling our landfill with all those little plastic cups.

So, were I to win one of the fabulously mentioned coupons, I think I’d invest in a Bodum (my mother-in-law has used one for years!) and try to be a tad more environmentally friendly in my coffee consumption.

    Au revoir!

What a lovely morning. I love yoga too – Baptist is the style I like.
I want to make a comment about granola and granola-type cereals like Bear Naked. Good granola has all natural ingredients – as you said, nuts, seeds, and oatmeal. It is a delicious source of wholesome energy but you only need a handful, not a bowlful, because nuts are calorie-dense. Watch out for commerial granolas – they always contain lots of sugar and other bad stuff. NOT what you want. My husband likes Bear Naked Fit. It has less sugar and fewer calories than their regular varieties. That said, a serving size is still about 1/4 cup. Its best to use granola as a sweet crunchy topping for yogurt.
PS. I enjoy your blog. You are doing a great job!
