No Jar Left Behind

April 15, 2011

I know you guys think I eat something in an empty nut butter jars all.the.time. But really, we just have a bunch of jars open at once and they all seem to get empty at the same time! I had snack-in-a-jar yesterday and today was hot OIAJ!

IMG_6792Blog-2

Mmm mmm Maranatha. It used to be one of my very favorites and then I started to like it a little less, but by the time I got to the bottom of this breakfast I was in hog heaven!

IMG_6799Blog-2IMG_6800Blog

Maranatha OIAJ

  • 1/3 cup rolled oats (replenished my stash!)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • Half banana
  • Pinch salt
  • 1 tbsp ground flax
  • 1/3 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end [yes you can taste it!]
  • Lynda’s Granola crumbles
  • Nut butter residue!

IMG_6798Blog-2IMG_6801Blog-2

Served with Gypsy Coconut Chai. I’m on …perhaps…day 5 without coffee? Guess I could look that up pretty easily on the blog!

IMG_6797Blog-2

*****

OK just went to look it up. Last coffee was April 8. So 1 week without! I think I went through most of my withdrawal symptoms during March when I cut back from 1.5 mugs to .5 mug. I’m feeling pretty good now, although this morning I got a strong whiff of coffee beans when I opened the cabinet and really wanted some! Once I’m 100% unaddicted I’ll probably add it back on an every-few-days basis. Matt is still making a pot everyday.

I’m off to Body Pump in a bit, out to lunch AND dinner today. Feeling a bit overbooked, but it’s all for good reasons!

Looks delicious. Do you have any suggestions for books or resources on nutrition for lay people (those of us who aren’t dietitians? ;)

My favorites I have read were “Superfoods Healthstyle” and “Eating Well for Optimum Health”

Thanks for the suggestions Kath. I’ve wanted to ask this same question. The library I work in has a ton on stuff on nutrition but it’s for professionals and I’m not interested in the clinical aspects of it at this point in my life.

i’m reading this post as i’m eating a bowl of oatmeal a la kerf!!! i’ve been “dabbling” in making oatmeal as you do with the banana whipped in and some nut butter and granola on top but something just.wasn’t.right. (i thought….how is someone so hooked on something that tastes just…mehh) i finally finished my tub of 365 brand oatmeal and bought quaker and it’s safe to say this is a life changin’ bowl of oats!!!! i totally get the “doughy” texture that you talk about. had to get on to tell you right away…thanks for improving the nutrition of my morning :)

I went off of coffee back in January. One morning I woke up and just felt like having tea instead, and now whenever I go for a regular coffee it seems as if my body can’t handle the caffeine! I get shaky and have heart palpitations! Though the smell is still amazing :) I wish I could find a coffee-smelling candle haha ;)

Hope you have fun at Body Pump! I miss that class! Have you ever tried a Pilates Sculpting class? It will really get your muscles burning if you have the right kind of teacher! Happy Friday :D Enjoy your lunch and dinner dates!

Kath, have you noticed the sugar difference between the no-stir maranatha almond butter and the original roasted maranatha almond butter? I recently got a huge jar of the original one at costco and was comparing it to the no-stir one cause the taste was just different..turns out they added sugar and salt to the no stir one! bleh. i don’t get why they do that..

Can you tell me why you’re cutting down on coffee? Tea has similar amounts of caffeine as coffee, so it’s not for that reason, right? I wish I had the willpower to eat as well as you… I’m such a carbo-holic… any tips to get past this?

Reply

29 KathEats April 15, 2011 at 8:40 am

Because I was very hooked on the caffeine – which I never drank coffee for in the first place. I hated being a slave to having a cup for breakfast or ruining my day with aches and pains.

Tea has much less caffeine – about half on average

I was eating that almond butter for a while, but I ended up going back to peanut butter. I just couldn’t find anything documenting a major health benefit of almond butter over peanut butter, and I like the taste of peanut butter better. I did, however, switch to the natural Jif; I like that I recognize all the ingredients as actual foods!

Reply

34 Baking Books April 15, 2011 at 9:23 am

I “switched” to almond butter because I thought it could break my ridiculous peanut butter habit – turns out I love AB even more – and I discovered a whole new love for other nut butters (cashew, etc.).

I opened a whole other can of worms! :)

What kind of cottage cheese do you buy? I know the dry kind is better – less ingredients – but I love the creaminess of the other stuff ;)

I’m doing that too!! Once every few days with the coffee. The week we were moving, I had about 1/2-3/4 mug everyday, but put that to a stop. I felt worse [groggier] after drinking it, even though it was sooo delicious. Now, I usually take a swig or 2 of the leftover that doesn’t fit in Chris’s coffee mug. I only have a full cup 1-2x week. I miss it, but feel better!

I used to use having a cold or the flu as an opportunity to cut out coffee, because I already felt like crap and coffee never sounded good then anyway. Problem is, I haven’t had a cold or flu for years! I have an easier time totally eliminating something for a while, too, then adding it back in lesser amounts. I’m doing that right now with sugar, and I think I’m about due to hit the caffeine “reset” button soon. I know what you mean about the smell of coffee…even before I became a coffee drinker, I loved the smell of coffee beans!

Reply

53 Chad April 15, 2011 at 10:18 am

I drink coffee for the coffee not for the caffeine and I admit… the caffeine can tend to be a little much.

I just finished a jar of Maranatha almond butter and I will be doing this. This is more brilliant than Einstein’s theory of relativity.

I actually don’t reeeealy care for the taste of coffee I drink it just for the caffeine. I even put ice in it in the a.m. so I can chug it faster. Some days caffeinated gum, mints or straight-up caffeine pills are added (yes, on top of coffee) to stay alert and productive through my day. If they had patches, I’d buy them.

I don’t need or use any caffeinated products on the weekends, because I’m able to get enough sleep – but the work week? Forget it. 12 hour workdays and conference calls that push through till 10 pm are the norm. Our country’s current work expectations are ridiculously unhealthy. Don’t be horrified by the caffeine consumption – just another point of view. :)
