KERF vs. Daylight

January 20, 2010

Gotta get to bed in 3…..2…..

Had a GREAT run tonight!!! In fact, it was a pretty great day! I got home from work after a good conference call with Open Sky. LOTS of fun things coming! Then I caught up on my blog job for about 30 minutes and headed out for a run. One of the keys to afternoon exercise for me is I CANNOT be hungry! If I am I will cut my workout short and come home ravenous, so I made sure to fill up on a bar during my commute home even though I wasn’t totally hungry for it. I knew I’d need it before my run.

I actually really love these new Vega Vibrancy bars. I will warn you, the taste is quite strange and very seaweed-y, but if you can get over the taste, the TEXTURE is so totally awesome that I think this is my new favorite bar! There are almonds and hemp seeds embedded in a chewy, datey base and the crunch is similar to that of Nuttzo and my favorite Flax Oat Bran bread. I think I have decided that I just love the texture of crunchy bits embedded in soft chew. The 9 grams of protein make this bar a hunger fighter (it sat like a rock in me) and the greens make it very nutritious. I have yet to try the chocolate flavor!

So I set out on my run in long sleeves (my new very favorite Old Navy sports t-shirt) and leggings and it was the perfect temperature outside. 60*, warm and great for running. I knew right away I wanted it to be a speed run: 5.5 miles in 47:21.

My legs and lungs both felt awesome. The run was a battle with daylight and I made it home just when darkness was setting.

Also dying of thirst!

That bar really held me over because I had no interest in dinner for over an hour. I shower, did more work, wrote thank you notes, cleaned. Finally I put Matt to bed and came down to whip something up [it was "On Your Own" night anyways since we had leftovers to use]

I used up Monday’s salad with more spinach, a drizzle of olive oil and agave with a sprinkle of salt and the last of my Cranberry goat cheese

Plus a log of Flax Oat Bran with a thin schmear of Nuttzo and some TJ’s pumpkin butter

I relocated this pretty setting to my coffee table to watch House Hunters!!

Dessert tempted me from the fridge: leftover Snickers Cheesecake

Small plate, small spoon, small slice :)

Ahh, that cranberry goat cheese — I need to find one! And yay for a great workout — and I agree there are two things I cannot and should not do hungry and those are grocery shopping and working out. Both end disastrously if I don’t have a little something in my belly! haha

I the same way with afternoon workouts… I CANNOT be hungry… or I eat everything in site…

Have a great night :)

Great run, Kath! I love when the lungs and legs cooperate; you know it’s gonna be a good run!

Been wanting to try out those Vega bars.

I’m the same way with hunger and exercise. I cannot be hungry while I’m working out. My exercise will be cut short for food any day!

As soon as the temperature hits 50, I’m outside in shorts and a t-shirt. Even if it does cause a few strange stares from the neighbors. ;)

Great run and your leftover salad looks amazing.

I love all vega product! I haven’t tried that bar yet, but will make sure I pick one up, warning on the seaweed taste noted. As long as it’s not a surprise it should be fine.

How much do you love your garmin? I’m thinking about buying one, just not sure yet..

How cool! Congrats on the article and the run.
“It seems easy enough but can be challenging, said intern Katherine Younger. She and other staff tested oatmeal using water, milk, a combination of both milk and water as well as with different flavors.
Several variables that have to come together to make a large batch of good oatmeal, Younger explained, even the type of pot used.”
Haha niceee! :-)

Ugh Kath, I couldn’t handle the taste of the Vibrancy bars, but I did love the crunch factor!

That shirt is from Old Navy? I’m coveting it!!! It’s super cute, love the thumbholes!

I’m also coveting your weather right now. It’s about 40 degrees and it’s been pouring for the past 3 days. Being that I live in the desert, I don’t know how to deal with this much rain!

You made it sound like you don’t take water on your runs-I hope you do-you should really drink throughout your run-my Ironman coach says so!!! ;)

Reply

36 Kath January 21, 2010 at 6:15 am

I don’t :( I can’t stand the thought of running with water! It would weight and slow me down so much. I know when {if} I start running longer distances it’s a must though, so I need to find one I can run with. Gruf.

haha. I didn’t know Old Navy sold workout stuff! You can tell you live in the South though…I would be so hot running in long sleeves in 60 degrees! That’s tank top weather :) It seems like I have to wear short sleeves and/or shorts if it’s anything over 40 out.
