I feel like we’re running a boarding house
People in every corner!
[So bear-like...
]
We picked up something like 7 loaves of Great Harvest bread yesterday. Karen brought a handful from the Charlotte store and Pablo gave us a few from Warrenton. We of course had to make French toast for breakfast!
Matt cold-brewed some iced last night. He just put 1/3 a cup of grounds in with 40 oz of cold water and refrigerated it unpressed overnight. Turned out great. Just requires a bit of forethought!
We also made a few coffee cubes one day. I put some in with my milk and poured
Looks kind of gross with that black cube!
Topped with sliced peach, Bella Eats Blackberry Jam, Sunflower butter, chia seeds and Kodiak Raspberry Syrup
I have some work to do, and we’re going on a big powerwalk across UVA’s grounds in a bit.

Very cool iced coffee method! Never thought of soaking the grounds overnight!
Lol, your kitchen is like a factory – so much french toast! And it all looks so professional..well done! :p
Have a good walk
“So bear-like” HAHA! You just made my morning, Kath
Breakfast looks wonderful, and the more the merrier, I’d say!
Great idea for the iced coffee!
I love how your french toast looks like, it must have been so yummy!
I think coffee cubes are brilliant. Makes me wish I liked coffee!
I love drinking out of mason jars! It feels like I’m living in the South in a different era.

Happy anniversary to your parents! How wonderful!
That french toast looks so good, I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow!
the french toast looks divine! especially with all the toppings!
ps. am loving the new look of your blog!
Thanks
Aw happy anniversary to the parentals! I love hearing about long lasting marriages.
French bread looks like the perfect breakfast for a group. Love the topping choices.
Mmmmm, that’s a good looking breakfast Kath
Coffee ice cubes! Great idea!
I need to invest in an ice cube tray.
Good way to start the day! The french toast looks like GH Savannah bars!
We all know I’m a huge fan of coffee ice cubes!
Looks tasty! By the way, thanks for suggesting your sister’s blog. I love following you both. You did an amazing job at HLS and I’m glad we got to meet and hang out a bit!
Enjoy the walk–today is move-in today at UVA so it will be quite busy over there!!
I never thought of coffee iced cubes. What I great way to keep your iced coffee from getting watered down! And oh my goodness–that french toast! I think I just found out what i’m having for breakfast on Sunday.
I think you should up shop as a B & B! Your breakfasts would have your guests not wanting to leave:)
Like your UVA terminology (“Grounds”), Kath! I’m heading back to Charlottesville for the first time since graduating in May and can’t wait! Enjoy the sunshine!
I got in trouble for saying “freshmen” and “campus” a few weeks ago. Did you notice my sarcasm
Your food always looks so delicious! And congrats to your parents! Job well done
What a seriously delicious breakfast! I love making iced coffee but often forget about making it in advance – it’s so much better that way! I love the coffee cubs you made!
LOL at the photo of Matt asleep! By the way, have you ever listened to the Sporkful podcast? I’m wondering if that’s where you got the coffee ice cubes idea from…
That’s actually Andrew!
happy anniv to your parents! re: full house the more the merrier!
Fantastic idea to cold-brew the coffee in the french press overnight! I’m definitely borrowing that idea
.
There is just something about good bread!! I wish I lived near a Great Harveat:-( Happy Anniversary to your parents:-)cc
That’s alot of french toast. Sounds so good.
Happy Anni to your parents!!!
Those pics of the sleepyheads are terrific
Wow – that french toast looks divine!
Aww, Happy Anniversary to your parents!
That french toast looks incredible!
aw, happy anniversary!!! that’s so awesome
and i love full house…i so thought that dialogue was TOTALLY normal growing up!
Oh my now I must made french toast this weekend, yum-yum!
Mmmm your breakfasts are always so exciting!! Happy Anniversary to Mum and Dad KERF!
Oh, the luxury of making a big, hearty, delicious breakfast every morning! Wish I could do that. French Toast looks amazing!
I’d heard about cold pressed coffee but never knew how much grounds to use. Thanks for the proportions! It also doesn’t look too strong, which I was a little concerned about.
I love making mocha drinks with frozen coffee cubes!
My husband used to make iced coffee in the french press – but like you said, requires preparation the night before. Making it in the morning is sometimes easier! Did you also find the grounds were still in the iced coffee? He used to have to press it 2-3 times.
Happy anniversary to your parents!
I think it pressed the same as hot coffee does?
Your french toast looks gorgeous. Did you find cold-brewing the coffee made it less bitter?
I didn’t notice a difference
I admire your stamina. The stress of traveling followed immediately by house guests would be too much for me. I guess you get through what you have to get through, and having a positive outlook helps
It is too much for me
your french toast looks AMAZING…love all the toppings!!!!
can’t wait to make my french toast have character on saturday morning.
thank you
Happy anniversary to your parents!
The breakfast looks absolutely delish- definitely better than anything that’d normally be served in a boarding house
It made me smile to see you use UVA lingo. I’m glad you are enjoying C’ville. My 4 years at UVA were some of the greatest of my life so far and I loved every minute of living in such a beautiful place! So I’m loving living vicariously through you as you explore the town and all it’s wonderful eateries
You have just put my breakfast to absolute SHAME! I want this. Now. I really need to jump on the coffee ice cube bandwagon and the homemade iced coffee bandwagon. Like you said, it just takes a little forethought but it always seems like such an effort! Lazy bones…
I love cold brewed coffee! Ok, I just love coffee. Now that’ you’re an RD (woohoo) are there any negatives to coffee other than the caffeine? My fiance insists it’s bad as bad for you as soda but I try to tell him it’s not the same thing.
Not that I’ve ever heard of! The caffeine MAY have a few good and bad effects depending on the person, and I’ve read that french press coffee MAY raise cholesterol if you are prone to high cholesterol in general, but coffee has antioxidants and is probably pretty good for you!
French toast on freshly baked bread is the best. And why just top is with syrup when you could top it with all those amazing things?!
Kath, your photography is so amazing in this post (and so is the French toast!).
Thank yoU!
Wow – that French toast looks amazing!!
it’s like a bed and breakfast!
Your coffee totally doesn’t look gross! It actually looks like you have a piece of chocolate floating around in there…hmm, that might not be a bad idea…
OOo new layout I notice! Looks lovely. Happy anniversary to your parents! They seem like wonderful, loving people.
Your food always looks wonderful, of course, and this might have to do with the 4 miles I just ran, (in prep for that 6k!) but that french toast looks super delicious. Yumsters galore. I gotta get that syrup.
What a milestone!
Enjoy being back in Cville.
Happy anniversary to your parents, as well.
Ha love all the people in the corners! Also love the french toast. My oldest brother calls it “fancy french toast” whenever we use real bread instead of store bough
How fun! I love a full house!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY KATH’S MOM AND DAD!
Don’t you just love it when there is a full house? It’s so much fun when
all the friends and family are around.
Great idea about the coffee ice cubes.
have fun with the full house! great way to start the day for everybody there.
That french toast looks incredible! I want a KERF breakfast, too!! : ) Have fun with your family.
Oh man, that french toast looks amazing!!
That french toast looks out of this world good. Seriously, I can’t even find words to desrcibe how badly I want to eat it. Also, coffee ice cubes are a terrific idea. I hate when the ice in iced coffee melts and makes the entire drink watered down.
Happy anniversary to your parents!
That raspberry sauce looks fantastic!
Happy Anniversary to your parents!
Yumm! I love all of the toppings on your fluffy French Toast
Cold brewed is the only way I make iced coffee these days. Can’t beat it!
looks like you’re having a great time with family!
I went to a cafe once that offered coffee cubes. I always thought the idea was genius but never actually made them for myself.
Your breakfast is so rustic and perfect. I feel like you should be writing for Real Simple magazine.
Always the best compliment I can imagine
It’s my parents’ 33rd too!!! A happy day to yours!
Happy Anniversary to your parents!
That toast looks so good.
what a delicious way to start the day!
Hello! I just saw your hubby, brother-in-law and mother-in-law on the Corner, passing Mellow Mushroom! It was like a celebrity sighting. I didn’t get a chance to say hi though.
COOL! They were buying running shoes
Larbs and I had already walked home!
Hi Kath!
I’m curious what your take is on too much sugar in the diet? I have a few friends that are lowering their sugar/carb intake from Jorge Cruise’s diets. I tend to eat way more than the 15 grams that they’re limited to per day, since I eat jam, oatmeal, lots of fruit, etc. I’m just wondering if you have an opinion on the health pros/cons of this.
Love your blog – thanks so much for all of your inspiration!
I think if it’s natural sugar from fruit, natural sources (milk, yogurt) or even a little in jam it’s perfectly fine. Sugar from sweetened yogurts, cookies, in coffee/tea, sugary drinks adds up and is probably not the best health choice.
Thanks everybody! This time 33 years ago I was getting ready to put on my wedding dress, which Kath used to have fun trying on when she was little (well even when she was big.)
That breakfast looks amazing. I’ve never even thought about freezing the coffee for iced coffee…genius!
Wow 33 years? Congrats to them! That french bread looks soo good! I haven’t had that in so long.
Love seeing the Shenandoah Valley love. I spent 4 years there attending JMU. Go Dukes!
that looks amazing! i’m definitely making french toast this weekend!
happy anniversary to your parents!
He is SUCH A BEAR!
Hi! I’m a new reader
I was confused at first about the coffee cubes… but then I caught up. So smart!
That french toast looks amazing and I bet it was!!
I have you parents have a great anniversary! That is so sweet. =)
That is one delicious looking breakfast! Really putting me in the french toast mood now hmmm
Thats crazy! i’ve never seen one of those pans you cooked breakfast on before about 3 minutes ago when i saw one on Iowa Girl Eats blog, and i asked her what its called, i just have a regular frying pan and a grill pan, that looks great! i WANT!!
Love the idea of catering and cooking for a big group of people! Not sure my skills would be quite so fantastic as your own though!!!! xx
Um, can I move in too? That French toast is too darn appealing.
Enjoy all that bread. I have yet to try the great harvest bread as french toast, must do it soon.
Wow! Warrenton! You were def. in my neck of the woods today. We went to a nice wine bar in Warrenton for Valentine’s Day this year. It was called the Iron Bridge Wine Company if you ever come back up.
Happy Anniversary to your parents! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more fruit-filled and fresh-looking french toast!
Your french toast looks sooooo good! YUM!
Wow! I’m so impressed! That looks awesome. Thanks for sharing all of those pictures.
Holy YUM! That looks so good!!!
you can make iced coffee by using the iced coffee maker. My BF got me one. It’s kinda like a jar, but there’s this contraption, like a removable filtet where u insert your coffee and put it in the fridge overnight. pretty good as well! Slightly diff then french press. But as good!
