Marnin’

[Said in deep Southern accent ;) ]

Last night I tip-toed back downstairs after my bubble bath to make the overnight oats I’ve been craving all week. I sure am knocking out the cravings this week: roasted squash, brussels sprouts, green smoothie and now overnight oats! Guess those are all good cravings to have

Overnight oats this time around were made with a sample I got from Bob’s Red Mill – Old Country Style Muesli!

IMG_1585 (640x427)

Last night I combined about 1/3 of a TJ’s greek yogurt container (thanks for the gift Kate + Nate!!), about 1/3 cup milk and 1/3 cup muesli to soak.

This morning I added: 1/3 cup pumpkin, cinnamon, a tsp of chia seeds, a whole sliced banana and some BRM Crunchy Coconut Granola. Oh, and coconut on top!!

It was overflowing with pure bliss….

40% Peppermint Creme with 60% Decaf Pumpkin Spice. It feels good to be back on mostly decaf.

Sweet Dreams!

From Spark To Sparkle

Coming soon to a bookshelf near you: SparkPeople.com is coming out with a book! "The Spark" comes out on Dec. 29th and I’ve been given a sneak-peak 5 copies to giveaway. The book isn’t a diet book – it’s a compilation of tips and success strategies from the SparkPeople members and Founder + CEO Chris Downie. Having lost 30 pounds with the support of an online healthy community, I am excited to see a book focusing on behavior change, motivation, and tips rather than some new dieting philosophy. KERF has been featured in the Spark Blog a handful of times!

Leave a comment to enter, and I’ll pick 5 random winners tonight :)

This is probably a silly question, but do you always eat overnight oats cold, or can you warm them up in the morning?

Reply

87 Kath December 21, 2009 at 12:03 pm

In the colder months I nuke them for 30 seconds to take the chill off, but they are still cold. I hesitate to heat them too much because the yogurt might curdle or something.

Enjoyed your Gather post! I think I may be in that situation of getting too much sleep and then feeling tired during the day. My other problem is that I am a night owl! I stay up way too late, wake up early, and then take long naps after class or stay up late, sleep in, and feel sleepy late afternoon. I resolve to improve my sleep cycle and hopefully my body clock can adapt to an earlier bed time!!

With your french press do you get a thick layer of coffee grinds at the bottom on your mug? I bought mine from OpenSky and I love the french press but not a fan of the bottom of the glass coffee grinds!

Reply

232 Kath December 21, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Do you mean at the bottom of the french press?? There shouldn’t be grounds in your mug. There is always a SMALL amount of sludge in my mug of coffee at the end, but not grounds. Just a thicker coffee liquid.

She just recently joined spark and it has actually brought us closer. Not only that but I am a SP motivator due to the fact that I lost this weight from a wheelchair and am determined to walk again. I know. determination is somewhat tempered by reality. But I have grown to love exercise and want the best for my health. SP the website is great! The Book should be very helpful to many! I cant wait to get a copy. thank you for this giveaway! I’m back to beginning again after pretty much maintaining my weight for the past 2 years. I’ve gained back 15 in the past year. Between the stresses of having breast cancer again, going through a divorce, attending college full time, and discovering that i had some addiction issues, it’s just been a little too easy to sit back on my laurels and let the old habits take root once again.

I’m always looking for good healthy recipes to add to my life and to share with others. I think I will try this one but using steel cut oats instead and see how that works.

Best of the best to all of you. . .

I would love to win a copy of the Spark book. I have been on SP since April 08. It has changed my life with all the support and info. I have lost 50lbs and still counting. I have gotten off insulin and 2 diabetes pills. I can now go to gym and walk and run. The main thing though is that I can sit on floor with my handicapped son and play with him. He can fit on my lap now! I know that sounds silly but it means so much to me since I could not do that before. I would love this book but of course other things come first so I can not get one right now. This is a life long journey and I know this would help me.

SpakPeople has shown me that hope is always alive! I am most happy with the fact that SparkPeople is filled with real-life people in real-life situations helping, supporting, and understanding all from different perspectives. It has been my experience that I work better in a positive invironment, so when I attract positive people I get positive feedback and positive results. In the past I joined groups and found a lot of “poor me’s” which only fostered the “poor me” in me. Maybe I wasn’t focusing with the right intent, now however, I feel as if I can log on at any given time and find many people who are in various stages of growth/health sharing hope and triumphs. I can certainly understand why there are so many here who have already reached their goal and now extend a helping hand from the place of knowing.
I am looking forward to the book coming out and I would love to receive a copy!

Blessings, Sapphire

I need to win that book! I have been on a quest for healthy eating for several years with some success and weight loss. Fact is, I love whole grains foods and roasted veg and all the good things. But I get so unfocused when things get in my way. I’m hoping with reading the SPARK Book and joining their January Boot Camp, it will kick start me into a system of fitness and health. I am putting your page into my favorites. Carol

We just found out my husband (of 44 years) has type 2 diabetes and needs more fiber in his diet so this would be a big help.

SparkPeople is definitely just what I needed to jump start getting/staying healthy and losing weight. I found the information I needed to get started right and the support/motivation to keep doing it. I’ve lost 7 lbs, which doesn’t sound like a whole lot to some people, but by doing it the right way (not undereating and overexercising like I always did before), I know that this first 7 lbs is going to stay off and it is only the beginning. Seven pounds is a lot for me.

I would recommend SparkPeople to anyone and everyone.

Hi Kath,
I just saw a post on Sparkpeople about your site, with a chance to win a copy of the Spark, so I thought I’d check it out, and I love your site!! I’m very excited to start following your updates!

I have actually already pre-ordered the Spark, but I want to get a copy for my mother-in-law. She is talking about having surgery for her weight. I’m trying everything to talk her out of it. I have pushed her to become a member of Sparkpeople, which she has created an account, but she doesn’t use it. I was hoping if I got a copy of the Spark from you, it would help her to start using Sparkpeople and lose weight so surgery is not needed. My mother-in-law needs to lose about 150-200 lbs.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom on this website!
Happy Holidays!

I have been a member of SparkPeople since July 31, 2009. I stumbled across it while looking for yet another way to track my calories. This would be round 4. My goal was to lose about 25 pounds. I knew about eating healthy and I knew I had to add the fitness element to achieve my goals. Finding someone or something to help me through that journey is so key. I have changed in the last 4 months, I am down 20 pounds and feel fit, fab and fifty (something ;D). I have hit the point where I love to jog/run – and let be known that up until now, I hated, HATED to run. It is now a daily part of my life and I pray that I will be able to maintain this life style. SparkPeople is so different from any other site. The support from my Spark Friends, the Spark Communities and so much more is unbelievable. If I have a question, I post it and someone seems to answer it immediately. Who could ask for more? One other great benefit is finding and connecting with great sites like this one! I must confess, I have pre-ordered the Spark, but I work with 35 women, of which half are over weight -several are obese. I am just looking for a way to continue to spread the Spark. Keep it positive ~ Happy Sparking!

I would love to have a copy of The Spark. As a mother of two children with classified needs, I have difficulty remaining focused on myself and meeting my needs. I think that this book may be just the motivation I need to remain healthy so that I can watch them mature. I also lack consistent motivation as I am the only one who is overweight in my nuclear family. My husband and children’s weights are smack in the middle of their recommended weight ranges. They eat the junk, I gain the weight.

I have been following SparkPeople for about a year and a half. I have been trying to live a healthy lifestyle, and have not been focusing on trying to lose weight–but I am down 10 pounds. I have been doing things despite my disability to try to become stronger and be able to do more. I would very much like to have my own copy of the Spark for my own library. I just filled out a request for my public library to purchase the book, but that could take months in the process!!
You have a great blog–I will return and see what else you have to say.

I came across SparksPeople.com when I was on the internet trying to find out some information. I got food poisoning and the doctor just couldn’t seen to get me get well. Read some articles from Sparks and did other searches too and with all my resources I got better. September 29, 2009 made a goal to lose 15 lbs by my birthday Dec.12, lost 14 lbs. I was still happy about that and have made another goal for Easter.
SparksPeople.com has got to be the best place to come to for help why? The receipes are so good, you have a place to keep track of everythings from what you eat, exercises you do , even a place to schedule time and date to meet to go jogging with friends or a doctor appointment, the Blogs, and all the other articles too many to list are so informative and helpful, you just keep coming back for more learning, you have friends here, I like the groups…you can pick one for hobbies, working on cars, jogging, your can start your our group like there is one for the state of Oregon, if you want to find something go to search, I mean you got a wonderful place here a Sparks not just for losing weight but for helping you to live a heathy llfe. Chris Downe thank you so much for inventing SparksPeople.com IT’S THE GREATEST!!!! Your book will be on the best seller list before you know it. Can’t wait to get a book.

Don’t know if I did the “website” space right BUT I am looking forward to this book as the site of SparkPeople offers so many suggestions and inspirations … it would be nice to have a “bible” like this to have in my hands to refer to in times of weakness. You see … I can’t always get online to visit Sparkpeople … and this would be such a joy to have around in those bad moments at work and stuff, when I get down and want to stuff my face in anger or in contempt or whatever!

Hi,

Have seen the book offered, but don’t have any way to pay for one. No credit cards or checks. I have a limited income. I have been trying to follow the plan on site. Spark’s are very special friends and have learned to make better decisions. My favorite team is Maine Spark’s.

Hugs to all, Debbie

The med’s I’m on are 99.99% guaranteed to cause you to gain weight.

I’ve ordered 2 copies – one for myself and another for my sister (hope she will get on the weight-loss/healthy lifestyle bus with me). I’ve been using SP since June and have lost as much as 23-1/2 pounds (right now 21 pounds as Christmas food is getting to me). I would love to win a book to pass along to some friends who are being inspired by my journey.

Merry Christmas! I’m bookmarking your website for future use.

I first used the Spark website simply because it had a free calorie tracker. Then I added the exercise tracker, and measurements. Even though I resisted at first, I eventually found that I was using the site everyday. Some of the advice is pitched at too simple a level for me, but I appreciate the effort and have found many interesting things using the Spark. I will check out the book, if nothing else, to pay back what I’ve learned from the site over the past year. And yes, I have lost 30 pounds in 2009.

Being apart of the Spark family has made a difference in my life. This is the first time in many, many years that I am actually losing the weight. The receips that you have posted not only sounds good but looks good. I love Granola, usually just eat it out of the box or with milk. I also love hot oatmeal, I eat it at least 4 times a week. I would love to receive this book. Have a Marry Christmas.

I have been struggling for some time, giving in to discouragement and feelings of being lost, and outside of going through my emails and getting Spark points through them. Quite a number of months ago, I joined Spark, used it daily as a tool, especially the food tracker and talking with team members. I even wrote a couple of blogs and actually started losing weight. But the bottom fell out because of circumstances (recurrent illness and ongoing unemployment with hitting dead ends trying to find a job) and I just gave up. I’ve needed what Spark can give but have not had the motivation to try and gained even more weight. I’m trying to climb out of the hole I have dug myself into and get back on track and so I’m taking little steps to get there. Spending 20 minutes a day on Spark and reading articles is the first step. Today marks three days in a row…baby steps. Maybe this book might help me. Please consider me as a possible recepient of the Spark Book..
