Who Doesn’t Love Saturdays?!

Or French Toast!?

dsc06756.JPG

I slept in today! Didn’t even set my alarm. Still got up at 6:45 though 😳

We decided to go to the gym first because we had fun breakfast plans. I had an apple with almond butter plus hot tea before my workout. I like to cut my apples really thin so I get lots of bites!

dsc06750.JPG

Around 8:30 we left for the gym. I had lots of energy today! 45 minutes on the ET plus about 15 of upper body lifting. I did free weights today and really tired my arms out – they were shaking when I was washing my hair!

French Toast

Since the husband has been busy this morning making 2 new loaves of bread, we used up the Kath’s Breakfast Bread on French toast! It was delish! I added a little confectionery sugar just for you guys 😉 And that’s my dipper of maple syrup on the side.

dsc06752.JPG

On the side I had a cup of fruit salad (cleaned out the fridge!) with banana, orange and grapes.

dsc06754.JPG

All together with coffee –

dsc06751.JPG

This breakfast was about 480 kcal, 6 grams fiber and 19 grams protein. That was 260 kcal worth of bread!

Full Speed Ahead

I am off to the grocery store, then it’s lunchtime (squash + kale soup – I can’t wait!), then we’re going to do a wine tasting “Around the World,” which means we’re going to our two favorite wine bars for their free tastings. We thought the Duke/UNC game was this afternoon and were planning to watch at the wine bar but since the game is really at 9pm we’re still doing afternoon wine and then will watch the game here tonight.

Hope you guys all enjoy your Saturdays! If you’re cooking in tonight, plan something really fun and special!

K

Beautiful french toast! Must have felt so comforting on a Saturday morning. And you’re right, who doesn’t love Saturday? (Maybe people who have to work early on Saturdays). I love the balance in your fruit salad. =)

What a perfect Saturday morning breakfast! I wish mine had been so nice…I just had a Pria Bar and sliced peach before my run this morning. Kind of embarrassing to admit! I’ll make up for it with a good/creative dinner, though! (Not cooked by me…we’re going out for Ethiopian tonight). If anyone here has not tried Ethiopian, I highly recommend it! Lots of fantastic spices and many vegetarian options.

I hear you about waking up early on weekends even without an alarm. I really can’t sleep past 7…even if I’ve been out later than usual the night before. I don’t mind, though. I enjoy having a cup of coffee, taking an early run, and then taking care of the more mundane chores and errands before the day officially begins.

I’ll be watching the UNC/Duke game today, too. My mom went to UNC, so I grew up rooting for them. Happy viewing!

    hey kath!

i keep asking questions about bread making, but i just had ONE last question about the honey wheat bread!

it says: Allow to rise for 45 mins, preheating oven to 400* (with that same pan of water still in there)
    -Bake for approx 25 mins

does this mean to let the bread rise IN the oven, as the oven is coming to 400*?? or let it rise at ROOM temp, as the oven comes to 400*??

i know this is probably a very dumb question, but i just needed to make sure! i dont want a bread diaster!

as you can tell, im a total bread amateur!

    thanks again!

Yummy french toast. Nothing better on a Saturday. I’m snowed in here too (we got a foot of snow in Cincinnati; it’ll take the plows days to clean it all up because we don’t get that much snow very often). That means no trip to the gym, but at least I have lots of time to clean and to figure out what to make for dinner with minimal groceries.

So enjoy spending the day out and about. I’m jealous of the tulips in your pics, but the snow’s beautiful too.

I am a fellow Canadian! I live in Rain Storm City (Vancouver, BC) though I am from Ontario and my whole family lives in Ontario in the Toronto area – I can’t believe there are still snow storms hitting.

Luckily although Vancouver is always Rainy there is TONS of snow on the Mountains for skiing adventures!

I was just wondering, when you spend that long on the ET, do your feet ever start to fall asleep? I have just noticed this happening recently when I spend a long time (more than 30 minutes) on the ET, and it is kind of weird/scary, so I just thought I would see if it ever happened to you… thanks!

About 2 weeks ago i asked you all for low cal drink ideas since i go out alot and since turning 21 have gained a whopping 7 lbs (that was just 2.5 months ago!)

I followed your advice and without changing my diet or excercise, just cutting back on drink cals, i lost 2.5 lbs in 2 weeks!

I feel so much better and am going to keep going untill i get the rest off, thanks for such wonderful advice everyone!

    Keep up the good work!

I’ve learned a lot too-I do know my nutrition basics, but am learning about how to have a pleasurable relationship with my food…which makes my life a lot better considering I eat 5 meals a day and if I take 20 minutes for each meal (averaged out) it is 36,400 minutes in 1 year 🙂
My son loves that I am more creative with his food too-not sure why I never gave his pb sandwich a raisin face or something like that… :O(

Also I learned about calorieking.com- which is a lot cheaper and more user friendly than my old *fooddiary*. 🙂

My feet fall asleep too. Sometimes it helps if you switch directions midway through – so if I do it for 45 minutes, at about 22 I’ll start going backwards instead of forwards.

My feet and toes fall asleep too! I have noticed that it takes longer to happen and happens less frequently when I weigh less so I wonder if it has something to do with the amount of weight on your feet having to shift back and forth like that?

I always thought it was just me so it’s good to know I’m not alone!

The toe-numbness/feet-falling-asleep thing happens to me on the elliptical, too! And I also always thought it was just me, but then last month or so, I read about it in a magazine – and of course I don’t remember which one. Anyway, it made it seem like it was fairly common because the pressure of all your weight on the nerves in your feet just… makes it happen, I guess.

I think the article suggested trying to lift your feet for a couple cycles. Kiala, it did also say that the problem might actually be your shoes, if they don’t fit you properly – so that could be part of it.

I’m just glad I’m not the only one. This way we can all be in pain equally.

I had the same problem on the elliptical b/c you aren’t actually moving your FEET but your LEGS, so circulation focuses more on the upper limbs (if you have arm pumps too) than your immobile feet. a trick is to pause for a few seconds just to actually MOVE your feet (rotate the ankle, etc). I actually switched to the treadmill a while ago, and that is a great way to workout w/out worrying about the circulation thing b/c your feet are moving too. Hope that helps everyone! Have a great Saturday (it was snowing here in TN but now the sun is out! ^_^)

    AA,

I’ve recently updated the honey wheat recipe because I didn’t have the volume measurements up and somebody asked me to do it. Since it was one of my old recipes I fixed it up some.

I actually don’t do the steam-risen thing anymore. I realize now that the reason it used to seem so essential was because I wasn’t starting my breads with enough water in them in the first place. Now that I’ve retooled the recipe, the steam rise isn’t necessary (as long as you keep the dough covered as it rises). Check out the new recipe and see if it works for you.

I don’t find the elliptical is a great workout anyways….I read in an article that people naturally prefer the elliptical to the treadmill because it’s an easier workout. I find workouts on the treadmill are much more challenging when you do intervals on a high incline. If I want an easier relaxed workout I do the elliptical but not if I want to really sweat and challenge my body.

I def. have had to shake my foot out on the ET, I think it’s because your foot is not moving.

Speaking of the ET why is it that I see people switch machines half way through their workout (to the bike or something else?). Kath, I think you do this. Does it produce better results. I hate having to clean off two machines 🙂

hey everyone whos feet fall asleep on the eliptical- it means you are putting too much of your weight on your toes. concentrate on pushing through your heels and your feet wont fall asleep plus youll get a nice burn in the back of your legs

robin- different machines work different body parts differently (theres no way that is grammatically correct) so when you swicth you keep your body guessing to avoid plateaus but still get the heart rate up to burn those cals.

    Ashley,
The French toast wasn’t anything special other than the bread we used. Just eggs, some milk, vanilla and cinnamon.

    Betsy,
    A pink lady!

    Rk,
Cookies!?!?!? I don’t know with coffee, but I’d say something like cookies or biscotti or muffins. Not fruit or anything watery.

    Re. Feet Falling Asleep,
This does happen to me sometimes. I just try to keep wiggling them around and shifting my weight as I go and that helps a lot.

    Jessie,
Congrats on the weight loss!! Keep up the good work 🙂

    Susa ,
Glad to hear you like CK!! And keep those meals pleasurable – even just some freshly picked flowers makes lunch taste better 🙂

    Christine ,
I ….worked up! I would do 3 miles, then 3.5, then 4. I’ve always been an endurance runner so I’ve never had a problem going for long periods. I just slow my pace if I get tired. But stopping to walk is great training. Just keep chugging and adding a little bit at a time and you’ll get there.

    Katers,
Wow, 10 lbs!! You must feel awesome!! Keep it up!

    Robin,
We always, always do the dishes the night before. Usually he does the heavy pots and I put everything in the dishwasher, dry the dishes he washes and put them away, and do the counters/sweep the floors (if they need it). With the two of us we’re usually done in 10 minutes.

    Robin,
I don’t really switch for any reason other than a mental change. I usually try to stay on one for the bulk of my workout and then just add 10-15 minutes on another at the end.

    Kate(the teenager),
    You have mail!

    KellyT,
    Thanks for the tip!

    Christine –

I did the Couch to 5K running program. See www.coolrunning.com and look around for their beginner training programs. There are several on there including a “one hour runner” program. I was done with the C25K in 9 weeks and can run comfortably for about 40 minutes straight now. A big part of it for me was learning that running doesn’t ever get “easy” in the way I was expecting it to. It became “tolerable” for longer periods of time! Also, the benefits and rewards are HUGE. I feel so accomplished after a run, a gargantuan self esteem boost!
