Tea Is Hot!

Foodblog-2307

Last week I had the fun of traveling to Boulder, Colorado to tour the Celestial Seasonings headquarters. I was joined by several of my blogging BFFs as well as a few other stellar bloggers that I got to know over the day-long visit. It was really exciting to see the inner workings of the leading herbal tea in the country. Celestial Seasonings’ holiday teas are my all-time favorites (Candy Cane Lane! Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride!) so this was such a special trip.

Foodblog-2292

This was my first visit to Colorado, and I hate that most of it was spent indoors! I need to go back and breathe in some more of that mountain air!! I flew in late in the afternoon, and sadly my suitcase did not make it with me. So I had to trudge around in my airport clothes the first night. My suitcase was delivered at 5am – just in time for the trip to officially begin!

We stayed at the St. Julien Hotel, which is my new favorite hotel. The lobby had a stunning gas fire and live music

Foodblog-2278

And the bathrooms were incredible!! A soaking tub with bath salts, minty spa products, a glass shower, robes and a four-poster bed. Highly recommend this hotel!!! The staff was so nice too – they gave me toiletries when my suitcase was delayed and were really accommodating about receiving it from US Airways in the middle of the night.

Foodblog-3 this !

Upon arrival we went out to dinner to West Flanders Brewing Co. Matt was so jealous that I was in Colorado in the company of so many craft beers, especially since the Great American Beer Festival was going on that weekend! I had the Avery Gored!, which I loved, along with this flight of Belgian-heavy brews from West Flanders.

Foodblog-0228

To eat I had a Niçoise Salad with Salmon that was packed with delicious ingredients like olives, artichokes, avocados and goat cheese.

Foodblog-0227

Early the next morning I met Julie and Monica in the workout room for a run/walk 5k on the treadmill. I’m glad to have gotten at least one quick workout in! After showers, we headed to breakfast.

Foodblog-2272

We had thick plain yogurt with fresh fruit and granola for breakfast. And hot tea of course!

Foodblog-2277

Our group piled into a LIMO and headed to Celestial Seasonings where we received the most amazing greeting ever!!

Foodblog-2282

Every employee was outside cheering a warm welcome with signs and smiles! It was so touching that they were so excited about our visit.

Foodblog-2285

We went inside to the tea café, and the tour began by sampling some of the Celestial Seasonings offerings.

We spent the morning learning about the history of Celestial Seasonings as well as a bit more about the company’s mission and ingredient sourcing. Celestial Seasonings was founded in 1969 by Mo Siegel, who had the idea to bring blended herbal teas to the marketplace. He loved to gather herbs in the Colorado meadows and sell them to health food stores and Celestial Seasonings was born. They have spent the last 45 years “gathering, blending, tinkering and sipping” teas. We learned that Millennials actually lead the growing tea population, and tea is becoming increasingly popular in the USA. Celestial Seasonings was making green and wellness teas long before they were trendy. They also have a heart for sustainability and that’s why their teabags have no string or outer wrapper. This packaging choice keeps 3.5 million pounds of waste out of the landfills!

Foodblog-2298

I loved seeing all of the original artwork from past Celestial Seasonings boxes. They commission an artist to paint each one and then turn the artwork into the designs you see on the tea boxes.

Foodblog-2322

Foodblog-2300

We learned about the proper way to steep tea (set a timer and remove that teabag!) and did some taste testing of green teas.

Foodblog-2304

My biggest take-away from our visit was the realization that I am totally underestimating tea’s role in wellness. When I think of tea, I think of a warm beverage. But Celestial Seasonings will tell you that tea is the second healthiest beverage – second only to water. I have to agree, and I would like to add more teas to my life for their ability to calm, sooth, destress, aid in digestion and encourage sleep. Not to mention all those antioxidants!

Foodblog-2306

These cups held the individual ingredients blended into the famous Lemon Zinger. It was cool to compare the flavors and aromas against the real one.  I loved the lemongrass brew!

Foodblog-2309

We took a lunch (and decaffeinating!) break at noon to enjoy this amazing BYO salad bar

Foodblog-2312

Along with a sweet potato soup and rolls

Foodblog-2315

Foodblog-2319

The dessert display!

Foodblog-2316

I had a mini mandarin cupcake, a chocolate tart and a chocolate-covered strawberry

Foodblog-2320

After lunch we got to take the famous behind-the-scenes tour of the factory. We suited up in space suits and hair nets for a peek inside.

Foodblog-0270

I can’t believe that ALL of the Celestial Seasonings tea in the world is made right there!

Foodblog-0281 Foodblog-0292 Foodblog-2

Foodblog-1

Refreshment break! This was the best kombucha I’ve ever had. Not too sour and the perfect carbonation.

Foodblog-2328

We had the chance to samples some of the secret new products that Celestial Seasonings has coming out in the next year. I can’t tell you what they are, but I am really excited about them!!

After a visit with the creative department to learn about the box design and naming (You wouldn’t believe all the names that Jammin’ Lemon Ginger almost became!) we had a happy hour with some of the staff to wrap things up.

Foodblog-2334

Celestial Seasonings asked a local chef to make some cocktails with their teas, and his concoctions were really creative.

Foodblog-2333

Foodblog-2331

I loved the Jammin’ Lemon Ginger Drop – bourbon // Jammin’ Lemon Ginger Drop simple syrup // lemon juice // sugar rim.

Foodblog-2342

We had just an hour to catch up on emails and get ready for dinner out. Caitlin and I got to walk around Boulder a little. Their pedestrian mall is much bigger than Cville’s!! I want to live here (except for the snow and the distance from the ocean!)

Foodblog-2343

Our farewell dinner was held at The Kitchen, which I loved for its farm-to-table menu and swanky atmosphere. The chefs involved tea in many of the night’s family-style dishes. It was an awesome experience!

Foodblog-2346

We started dinner with small plates of tea-marinated roasted peppers and chai curried cauliflower. Plus beet hummus with tea-infused flatbread, olives, spiced nuts, charcuterie and cheeses.

Foodblog-2345

Our four courses involved tea as well – {clockwise}

  • Green salad with beets, hazelnuts, chevre and orange tangerine tea dressing
  • Roasted autumn squash with wheatberries, chickpeas and chai spice yogurt
  • Tea-brined half chicken with garlic fries
  • Tea + pepper shrimp

Foodblog-

And for dessert: rooibos tea sorbet with tea cakes. Lots of tea!

Foodblog-2361

After our walk home we headed to the hotel pool and hot tub for a dip!

Foodblog--2

We had to get up very early to make our flight home, but we had the lucky timing of getting to stop in for breakfast at Great Harvest Boulder! This is Kevin, a friend of ours from GH Convention. Anne and I shared two hearty muffins and a raspberry cinnamon roll that was to-die-for. I’m trying to convince Matt that we need to acquire all three of these recipes from Kevin!

image

I’m eager to go back to Colorado and explore more, and I’m excited to add more tea to my routine, especially now that the weather is cold!

During our visit we had the chance to shop in the Tea Shop and pick out some teas and goodies to bring home. One of YOU will win this awesome tea package! You’ll get an electric kettle, a charming white teapot, 6 boxes of teas picked out by me, and a green “Teas with Altitude” shirt. When I was in the Navy on a 6-month deployment, my mom was watching my kids. Well my daughter is just so full of life that it would be hard for her to calm down to go to sleep. Or when she needed a nap and was cranky. So my mom made her nightly ritual a half of cup of Sleepy Time tea. Whether it had anything extra to help her relax, whether natural or not, it worked. She still asks for it now sometimes and she’s 20. LOL

So cool that you made it to Boulder, I lived there for years and am just down the road about 5 miles in Louisville now. I’m glad you made it to the Kitchen, I was feeling sad that you only got to check out West Flanders (which is okay but not anywhere near the best food (or beer) in Boulder). Hope you make it back soon!

Some recommendations for next time if you want them, Black Cat Bistro is amazing farm to table, they also have a more casual version next door (similar setup to the Kitchen and Kitchen Next Door), Oak is very good too, Frasca is the ‘famous’ Boulder restaurant that always gets write-ups in Food & Wine and Bon Appetit and that type of thing – it is very good though. For pizza Basta is amazing (but not downtown), Pizza Locale is Frasca’s downtown pizza venue and is almost as good as Basta (some people like i better). For more casual food Zoe Ma Ma is amazing Chinese/Tawainese street food, Sherpa’s is great Indian/Nepalese/Tibetan and is run by actual Sherpas (you can literally book your trip to Everest while eating dinner), either Mountain or Southern Sun is a good casual Boulder institution (some really great beer, food is casual but pretty decent). For a unique Boulder experience check out Shine, 100% gluten free menu and they have these alcoholic (or non-alcoholic if you prefer) ‘potions’ and ‘elixirs’ to drink which are supposed to have health benefits. The Biergarten right next door is fun too when you’ve had too much Boulder-vibe. 🙂

Oh, speaking of tea you also have to see the Dushanbe Teahouse if you didn’t see it while you were here (it’s downtown fairly close to the St Julien so maybe you stumbled across it), it was hand carved and painted by Tajikistan artisans and brought to Boulder piece by piece. A hike at Chautauqua followed by brunch on the wraparound porch is a must-do as well. 🙂

The Celestial Seasonings Decaf Green Tea with Mint is excellent! I remember Lemon Zinger being one of my favorite teas as a kid, how cool to see how it is blended 🙂

I typically will have a cup of tea after lunch, as a way to help “end” the meal (and prevent me from eating dessert every.single.day.) I also have a cup before bed, something like a Sleepytime or Chamomile with Lavender (Traditional Medicinals tea, another brand I like).

I agree that tea has amazing health benefits. I deal with two autoimmune diseases and I find one thing that helps to keep me under control is switching to green tea in the afternoon. This helps me keep my coffee habit in check and still allows me to stay warm in the winter (I found myself constantly drinking coffee all day last winter, and then realized I was only doing it because I was freezing! lol). Most importantly, green tea has antioxidants that I rely on to keep me healthy. I noticed a great change when I adopted this (as well as other) habits.

Also, the Green Teas, though I do them in the decaf version. Really enjoy them most as iced tea, mainly as a substitute/change for not drinking lemonade.

Note to CS marketing dept: Those photos of the box artwork are cool. I wish they’d come out with tea tins (like the English ones), with just the artwork and the tea type. Would display them on my counter, with my tea inside.

Just curious, did they tell you why lots of their teas have soy lecithin as an ingredient? See the ingredients list on this Sweet Harvest Pumpkin tea as an example: http://www.amazon.com/Celestial-Seasonings-Harvest-Pumpkin-20-Tea/dp/B007V2L8VU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1412648472&sr=8-5&keywords=celestial+seasonings+tea
Once I saw that on their ingredient label I stopped buying all Celestial Seasonings tea, as lots of the labels say “natural flavors” which can hide things that really don’t belong in tea. Why should there be soy in tea?

This is awesome! Would you be so kind to do another post or two on teas! Things like how long to brew tea, the specific health benefits (maybe even by a few teas), and how to sweeten teas in different ways like with white sugar, raw sugar, honey, etc…what’s the best way with which teas and how little much to still keep the health benefits. We are military and just moved from New York back to England (yes another 3 year posting here…yeah!). You know they are big on tea here however, they only stick to plain tea with sugar and milk. I’d love to hear from you with a post or two or three about different ways to drink tea properly. Also I have 3 kiddos under 10…is hot tea good for them….just throwing out some ideas. You are wonderful!! And I love your blog!!! Cindy

I have different pretty cups I use, put milk in a small pitcher, and my strainer, all on a beautiful tea tray reserved for this use. I get everything ready and then take the tray into the living to sit and really enjoy the tea and the moment.

Tea is so good in these cold fall/winter months! My mom and I love to host tea parties or even go to them! They are so much fun and it’s nice to sample a different teas each time.

I am a kindergarten teacher and love making a cup of tea on my 11am break to unwind a tad. My favorite is always changing but right now I am loving the Jammin’ Lemon Ginger Herbal Tea. It is also helping prevent any colds the little ones might give me!

I drink tea all day long, but I appreciate it the most when I’m pumping in my office. Tea adds a touch of warmth and comfort to an otherwise impersonal space.

It is definitely a cold weather drink for me here in Michigan, so I’m excited to begin drinking tea again this year to wind down each evening.

Tea ritual fav.’s include Celestial Seasonings Decaf Chia w/ almond milk & a dash of agave for a late night tea treat. Also, try to start each morning with a mint green tea, yum!!

Do they still let visitors enter the famous “peppermint room?” I went on a tour as a kid and it was a challenge to see how long you could last in the room where they stored all the peppermint, I just remember it knocking the wind out of me! What a fun tour.

I like to make it hot or in the summer ice it down. I especially love Country Peach Passion with a dash of my sweetener of choice at the time.

A little late to this post…but so glad you got to spend some time in Boulder. You must return and explore the outdoors!
I’ve been in the Denver area for over 10 years and have yet to visit Celestial Seasonings…I must do that soon! This post has inspired me.
