Surf’s Up

IMG_0141 (640x480)

Our umbrella rocks!!!!!!!!!!! Why have we gone so many years basking in the sun when we could have had this amazing piece of fabric protecting us!?

IMG_0139 (640x480)

IMG_0134 (480x640)

Hats help also. Matt never wears hats and I think he looks pretty cute in one!

IMG_0136 (640x480)

I’m on page 500 – such a great story!

IMG_0140 (640x480)

IMG_0142 (480x640)

Games were played

IMG_0146 (640x480)

Mom and I went for a walk

[Here are the cover ups x3!]

IMG_0148 (480x640)

Then we all got in the ocean!!! A family of 6 bumbling over the waves

Then more reading. We are a very book friendly family.

IMG_0152 (640x480)

IMG_0162 (640x480)

All of a sudden it was 6PM and I was starving! I coaxed Kanz into going in for beers and snacks while we continued to enjoy books, sun and sand.

He surprised us with some Kashi crackers! They are still good – because I love how the get suck in your teeth – but they don’t taste as good as they used to.

IMG_0153 (640x480)

I split the Magic Hat Ginger with mom

IMG_0159 (640x480)

Hunger subsided.

IMG_0155 (480x640)

Ahhhhhh. Evening showers, clean clothes and wine!

IMG_6612 (640x427)

I had a splash of Albero sparkling from TJs

IMG_6611 (640x427)

Dinner tonight was a break for the cooks – pizza delivery!

IMG_6625 (640x427)

IMG_6635 (640x427)

Pepperoni and Pineapple – huge NYC style slices!

IMG_6630 (640x427)

Jalapeno Mushroom – my fav!

IMG_6631 (640x427)

I made a huge salad to go with.

IMG_6621 (640x427)

Golden Rabbit bowl I brought from home. Love these big metal bowls. They are good for EVERYTHING!

IMG_6622 (640x427)

Plus a homemade dressing. My standard balsamic. Shake the following in a jar or tupperware:

  • 1/4 cup Garlic Gold oil (or olive oil + garlic. Garlic Gold wins because of no aftertaste here!)
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar (the good thick kind!)
  • 1 tbsp any kind of good mustard
  • Pinch kosher salt
  • Pinch pepper
  • Herbs to taste (I used dried basil and oregano)
  • 2 tsp honey

I used honey from our WEDDING!! Leftover favors from 6.2.07! I got the jars from a beekeeper in New Jersey and ordered the custom labels to put on the jars myself.

IMG_6619 (640x427)

IMG_6629 (640x427)

A bit of red with dinner – a Shiraz Matt’s friend Malcolm gave us for Xmas!

IMG_6627 (640x427)

IMG_6632 (640x427)

IMG_6637 (640x427)

I had a slice and a half of each

IMG_6639 (640x427)

IMG_6640 (640x427)

IMG_6636 (640x427)

My stomach – every now and then – does this weird thing where 1) I can’t decide if I’m starving or stuffed and 2) It’s bloated and distended 3) It has sharp pains. I think it happens when I don’t eat enough during the day, but I can’t make a correlation. I used to happen a lot and now only happens every now and then. Well it happened tonight! I couldn’t get enough food at dinner but was stuffed at the same time! Very uncomfortable.

After dinner, mom required us to go on a mandatory evening beach walk. The beach is so nice at dusk! I think it helped my stomach, which feels much better now.

I pretty much decided on the walk I’d just have a taste of dessert tonight.

But what do you do when a place of pound cake strawberry cream is set in front of you!?

IMG_6647 (640x427)

You say thank you and compliment the cook. Mom’s pound cake was the best I’ve had in years, and Breyers Vanilla Bean never lets me down.

IMG_6650 (640x427)

Night guys!!

Can’t wait to see where else you venture . . . some of my faves — The Loop for walking, Causeway Cafe crab omelet for breakfast, mocha shake (shared) from PCJ for a decadent treat, Circa 1922 for a fantastic dinner, Nikki’s for great sushi or vegetarian, Two Sisters Bookery for your next read, ice cream from Kilwin’s, views from Oceanic, kayaking anywhere, visiting the UNCW campus. Aww man, magical place. Soak it all in, soak it all in.

I love reading while at the beach. It is so calming and you get a good tan while at it. Just don’t leave your sunglasses on for too long like I tend to do. I have a pretty sweet set of raccoon eyes from it, lol.

That dessert looks delicious, by the way! I really shouldn’t be looking at all of this food so late in the day! It’s making me hungry, haha.

My stomach does the same thing with bloating and distention, but without sharp pains!! I t is so aggrevating sometimes to be so bloated and distention in your stomach, when you know you eat a balanced diet, I have been trying more to correlate it with gluten/wheat consumption to rule-out or rule-in celiacs disease. Lets hope not for either of us, because no wheat?!?! = horror!

Definitely have the same stomach issues when I wait too long to eat or don’t eat enough during the day. I’ve even had to just lay down for a bit to recover. I absolutely CANNOT go more than 4-5 hours without eating during the day. Obviously, my body doesn’t react well to it.

That stomach pain thing happens to me too! It is always when I go too long without eating. Needless to say, I try to eat every 3 hours so my intestines don’t go crazy on me. It’s the weirdest feeling though. I feel like I am getting stabbed in the stomach and/or am so hungry that nothing can subside my hunger. In reality, it is just ridiculous gas from my digestive system not working all day (TMI I know…)

    Eat more tomorrow girl!!!!

One more comment . . . interestingly, I felt this same stomach pain you’re describing when I was in the early recovery stages of my eating disorder. When I started to eat “normal” sized meals at regular intervals, I felt hungry and full all at the same time. I could practically feel my metabolism working, revving up for the next meal, making me hungry again. Yet I was full. So, it would make sense that your theory is correct . . . because basically I went from eating very irregularly (extreme dieting/bingeing) to eating regularly. So perhaps when our schedules get out of wack for whatever reason, our bodies react in a similar way. Hmmm, sounds like a great thing for an R.D. to study. 🙂

I had a thought about your stomach, and i please, no offense is intend. Is it gas? LOL When we make adjustment in our diet, eat more veggies or eat thing our tummies are not accustum to, it can make gas. Gas does not always mean you are (forgive me) burping and farting.

My stomach does that EVERY TIME I eat!!! And I eat real, whole foods, am not recovering from an ED, and I don’t wait too long btwn meals (or not long enough) – I thought I was the only one this happened to! I’ve tried limiting dairy, limited gluten, eating vegan, eating less fiber, and nothing’s helped.

I’ve been trying to figure out what expert to go to for it – an RD? An internal medicine specialist? Endocrinologist? Any ideas?

PS I think this is one of the most fantastic things about blogs; people can share issues/ideas/expertise/etc and have a shared experience.

My stomach did that for a long time too and I also thought I was overdoing it on the fiber (but seriously, does it need to be added to EVERYTHING these days?! I mean fiber water?! We don’t need THAT much, do we?!). I have concluded that I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), which apparently is somewhat common for women to develop in their 20s. It just means (in my own layman’s terms) your body has some issues digesting stuff sometimes. First I thought I was lactose intolerant, but I don’t think that’s it. Not sure who to go to on that kinda stuff, and I am DEFINITELY not an expert. However, they do sell over-the-counter supplements like Align and Digestive Advantage – IBS, which you take every day. I used to do Align but it is really pricy, although I liked the results. Now I take Digestive Advantage and rarely feel that way anymore. I don’t know if they have negative side effects but I haven’t noticed any, so it might be worth a shot…

sounds like a delightful day at the beach!

i know those stomach pains. i know them well. mine are mostly cured by avoiding all dairy products (sadly), but beer, red meat and greasy, acidic, spicy or sugary foods also like to wreak havoc. it sucks, i understand. but if it starts happening frequently enough try nixing different things (such as dairy/gluten/red meat) from the diet for a few weeks at a time and seeing if it helps.

Amy – I think bloating is a normal thing!
There are definitely some things you can do to minimize it if you get it after every meal but its part of life that your stomach will look different after you have eaten than when you are empty. This is something that has been hard for me to accept but its true! 🙂

I think it has a lot to do with the time of the month too (that feeling that you are full and yet want more) – at least for me.

Oh, man, that actually happens to me a lot. I think it does have to do with how much I eat at each meal and sometimes with what I eat… I love PB, but sadly I’ve learned the hard way that my stomach does not take fats well at all. Which might be an overreaction because the last time I suffered from bloating/pain from PB was when I binged on it… but I’ve learned to avoid it all the same. 🙁 I hope you can figure out why this happens! Maybe we’ll put together some clues?!

True, but I think it’s a bit of an overreaction to what are clearly common problems that lots of women experience (based on the responses to her blog). Unless she has a family history of cancer or other major red flag issues, I would say that immediately jumping to a concern about ovarian cancer is a bit of an overreaction. Also, if her pain is intermittent (i.e. not happening every day) it’s very unlikely to be ovarian cancer, which would be much more chronic.

So much beach fun, all in one post. Love it! And I love relaxing after spending a day at the beach, with a good meal and family. It’s making me miss the beaches of Maine in so many ways. *sigh*

Hope you can resolve those stomach issues! I get that on occasion as well, so you’re definitely not alone!

You are right, sometimes it is just better and more appropriate to say “thanks” to the dessert and enjoy it for what it is worth….and the love it represents.

I also get that bloating – to add to the train list above – and find it hard to know what to do. I do think there is a correlation (for me) with not eating enough in the day and my body trying to “compensate” at night, but feeling full too since it is being filled.

Lack of calories but trying to compensate in too short a time?!

    Hi Kath,

You are getting a TON of feedback about the belly issue so I’ll keep it short. I also get the pains A LOT it used to be everyday, now it’s once in a while. I can never pin-point exactly what causes it and that’s what makes it sooo frustrating. After reading about what you ate that day, I think it could be that you waited to long to have a real meal. Also, having the beer and crackers could have caused your belly to feel this way. I notice beer/carbonated drinks are the cause of that feeling in my stomach sometimes. Enjoy your vacation!

My stomach does that a lot after I work out pretty hard..I wonder if that has anything to do with it??

    Enjoy the beach! 🙂

Seems like a lot of people have the stomach issue too. It happens to me on a regular basis and I can’t tell if I’m still really hungry or full, and then there’s wondering whether or not it’s just thirst… We should start some kind of group in search of an answer! Haha.

Keep enjoying your time there, though it looks like you don’t need me to tell you twice. 😉

Seems I’m not alone with my weird stomach issues, either 🙂

I’ve definitely noticed it happening when I’ve had to wait too long to eat, but I can’t tie it to anything else so I don’t know if maybe I am allergic to something or have some sort of intolerance OR it just does that when I’ve waited too long.

I love vacations that are somewhat centered around enjoying food…I always base the success of my trips on the various foods that I consumed/enjoyed.

That definitely happens to me too! I’ve noticed it’s when I’ve waited too long for a satisfying meal. When I finally sit down to a meal I inhale it and end up with that full but still hungry feeling you’re describing! My tummy is full, but I *think* my brain feels unsatisfied so I feel hunger. It really helps when I’m eating every 3-4 hours and a good mix of protein/fats/carbs. If I go too long without a meal, I really try to eat slowly so I don’t end up with the tummy issue by eating a few bites and sitting back and letting my tummy catch up. It really helps!

Hey Kath – that painful starving/stuffed thing happens to me too, and I think it happens most often when I eat Italian food (sometimes I call it pasta tummy). Interesting that it happened to you with pizza… I wonder what the correlation is.

    RE. STOMACH:

Well, let me first clarify that I’m not talking about just a little distention after a large meal. Or even a little discomfort from eating too much. Those are both normal parts of enjoying a bigger-than-average meal!! My stomach is always more rounded at the end of the day than the beginning. But rarely is that painful.

Yesterday’s pains started well before I ate anything. I could feel the pains coming on and had crackers/beer to fix them. (Note: Historically alcohol has been one thing to HELP these pains!!) I used to get them in college a lot, perhaps when food was less plentiful and I did go too long without eating.

I do suppose the pain and distention was from trapped gas. And the odd thing is it happens regardless of how much or what I eat once it gets going. So I don’t blame the type of food (pizza, dairy, wheat).

I think this is just a natural part of my body saying I need more snacks! I guess out in the sun I didn’t realize I was hungry. But I don’t think I have anything seriously wrong with me!!

I get that same feeling in my stomach!!!! Personally it always happens when I haven’t eaten enough during the day, but I have eaten enough at that meal. Basically my stomach is full, but my body is still asking for more.

Cute jars of honey as wedding favors — what a great idea! We kept things really simple and made a donation to a couple of charities in our guests’ name, but things like this make me wish I’d been a bit more creative. C’est la vie.

We have a great balsamic vinegar, nice and thick and sweet in a good way (not syrupy or fake) — can’t wait to try it in this dressing!

I know EXACTLY what you’re taking about with your stomach. I have a lot of stomach problems and here are some things I do to help . . .

    1) A small snack (sometimes eating actually DEflates my tummy)
    2) Eat pickled ginger . . . really.
    3) Pepto / Gas-X
    4) Hot tea
    5) AVOID chewing gum & artificial sweeteners
    6) Go for a walk
    7) Don’t lay down immediately after a meal

    I hope this helps you!

    Hey Miss!

I am no GI doctor, but I have spent a fair bit of time studying all stuff GI related, and talking to people who do, and overcoming IBS. Not eating at regular intervals can definitely produce gas, which they gets “stuck” in the gut, and is unrelated to what you’ve eaten (though what you eat obviously effects your digestion in a big picture sense, that’s not the cause in this particular thing you’re describing). So your theory, at least from what I know, would seem 100% right 🙂

So glad you’re having a fun vacay!

    xo
