Sand In My Shoes

Ahoy there! We did a little bit of everything the same today: beach time, bike riding, reading, walking, drinking, and of course, eating!

I snacked on a few carrots and kashis around noon to tide me until we left for lunch around 1:30.

Conched Out

We went to the Conch Cafe for lunch – a nice 20 minute walk into town and back. It was your classic beachy lunch spot with fried seafood, salads and fruity drinks. The husband and I shared a Rum Punch (I had about 1/3) that was made with coconut, mango, and all kinds of fun flavors.

dsc08882.JPG

We ordered the Seafood Nachos for the table –

dsc08885.JPG

My portion (I could have eaten loads more but I resisted because I had more coming). The jalapeños were the best part! Add about 4 more chips to this plate for nibbles.

dsc08887.JPG

I ordered a salad with avocado, tomato and cuc and a citrus vinaigrette.

dsc08889.JPG

And shared conch fritters with the husband. I had 2.5 of them. They were yummy – like seafood hushpuppies!

dsc08891.JPG

He got a yellowfin tuna taco. I had a big bite and a small handful of his chips too. Lots of sharing!

Happy eaters –

dsc08884.JPG

After lunch we did some shopping (nothing good but beach souvineers) went for a 45-minute bike ride to find the island lighthouse.

Then we hit the beach one last time 🙂

Cocktail Hour

Meredith and I had one-too-many wine and cheese parties in college (……with just the two of us lots of the time!). So it’s no wonder we were both a little overweight upon graduation. She’s also lost 30 pounds since!! Tonight……… we reminisced.

With brie, apples and pretzels – and of course wine 🙂

dsc08930.JPG

Snacks:

dsc08934.JPG

And a brie-rosemary bread melt (threw it on the grill)

dsc08935.JPG

And we polished off last night’s Chardonnay while we prepped for dinner and cranked up the grill 😉

dsc08924.JPG

Tonight’s dinner was a grilled feast:

  • Zucchini + squash seasoned with thyme + salt
  • Portabello mushrooms brushed with olive oil
  • Fresh asparagus
  • Basil pesto-marinated chicken skewers (with store-bought pesto)
  • Beef skewers (seasoned with Worcestershire + garlic salt)
  • BBQ + Teriyaki Chicken Wings (in homemade marinades)

dsc08938.JPG

And Cabernet Franc from Virginia (brought by Meredith), which went perfectly with the grilled dinner

dsc08937.JPG

My dinner plate included:

  • A chicken skewer
  • 2 (+ 1) pieces of beef
  • A few squash skewers
  • A handful of asparagus
  • A portabello

It was fantastic!!!

dsc08943.JPG

I also had a bite of each of the chicken wing flavors, but I’m just not a wing eater.

We had a fabulous vacation at Folly Beach! Tomorrow we’re checking out of our house (Meredith and Scott have been here all week) and will be spending the day in Charleston before heading back to Charlotte.

Hope you all have fun weekends 🙂

mmmm dinner looks delicious! Enjoy your last moments on the beach! I absolutely LOVE ocean/island/fish decor and am extremely jealous of your beach time, but hey, you deserve it! My room is completely decked out in a fish/underwater theme, very relaxing indeed.

i think its commendable you guys still cooked while on vacation. When I go away, with friends or whatever, we either eat out or just snack the whole time.

i havent had brie in ages. brie with TLC honey seasme crackers are the best.

kath, ive decided that youre a dork.

don’t your friends think its odd that you stop to take pictures of everything you eat in restaurants? does your husband think its weird that you take pictures of the same bowl of oatmeal every single day? and the same half of banana with some kind of nut butter smeared all over it every mornng? and the same handful of raisins and nuts every time you have a snack? because he might think how rigid you are is cute after the first year of marriage but he will be thinking otherwise in five years when you stop to shoot your boob every time you whip it out to breastfeed.. this blog is so unbelieveably weird.

kath, I think you should edit out OMG’s comments before she posts them…it would make the blog much more enjoyable without a hater commenting. thats not criticism that helps, its just plain annoying! Enjoy your day kath and everyone!!

I really love this blog and I hate bringing up old subjects but sometimes I feel like you have to put what you “splurged” on to justify it yourself in your own head. Like “I took a BIG bite of my husband’s food….or saying you held back on nachos bc you had more coming” which was what…a SALAD?? it’s vacation and you exercised WAY more than any normal person does much less ate healthier!

Seriously people, let it go. Whats the point of all the negativity? Find something better to do with your Saturday then criticize someone you don’t even know. Good Grief!

I just wish I had that self-restraint! When I went to Mexico for a week in February it was literally nacho, enchilada and cake-fest 2008! PLUS I ran the first day and said ‘screw it’ for the rest of the week ahah. Definitely not taking a crack at Kath here, just giving my personal vacation-mantra ahah. Put on a few pounds but it was gone within the week when I returned to my usual regime. My work schedule only really permits one or two one-week vacations a year, so I darn well make the best of it!
