Pre-Breakfast

Ouch! Getting out of bed hurt. But actually not as bad as I thought it would!! My foot is doing well (especially after a morning ice!) and my legs are pretty good. Just some tightness in a few specific spots (the top of my quads). Emily is going to bring her foam roller to brunch! Considering that was my first long run with mega hills, I think I’m in pretty good shape. Today will be 100% rest, and perhaps even tomorrow will be super light. This is definitely one of those times that I’m taking a rest day no question. I need it to repair!

Today we’re meeting some of our friends for BRUNCH!! Fun!

I don’t know how to prepare for brunch though!? I woke up super hungry – could have eaten a huge breakfast. But I didn’t want to spoil my appetite for our 11AM date. Or eat too many breakfasty foods so that I would want lunchy foods at 11.

How do you all handle late brunch eating?!

I decided smoothies would be a good snack option. Matt requested PB + Banana!

IMG_9033 (640x427)

And beer!!

Two breweries we visited and loved!! Can’t wait to go back to Montana 🙂

IMG_9042 (640x427)

For TWO smoothies

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup cottage cheese
  • 1 tbsp flax
  • 1 tbsp Naturally Nutty Cinnamon Cherry PB (mmm!!!)
  • 2 KERF-sized handfuls of ice

IMG_9050 (427x640)

Topped with some EarthFare granola that I got for free with a coupon!

IMG_9036 (640x427)

This granola has a great texture – very crunchy.

IMG_9037 (640x427)

It’s not very sweet though. Which is a good thing! But also makes it a bit dull. Maybe some cinnamon would enhance the maple + pecan flavors?

IMG_9043 (427x640) IMG_9044 (427x640)

IMG_9048 (640x427)

Served with a cuppa Spring Blend!

IMG_9045 (640x427)

Not even 2 hours later….I’m feeling a bit empty. A glass of liquid and some granola are not enough to fill my stomach! Breakfast should be eaten like a king 🙂 I don’t know how people can go without breakfast. You know those studies that show that people who eat breakfast eat less throughout the rest of the day? I totally believe it. Whenever I have a smaller breakfast I am so snacky! And never get full. Eat your breakfast! Today I’m having two

 this !

Brunch always presents me with the same problem– you dont’ want to NOT eat, because then you’ll be STARVING going into it…but you don’t want to ruin your appetite either! I think a smoothie was a smart move!

I just caught up from your run yesterday– BIG congrats on completing the course!!! This will make you feel so much more confident on the day of the actual race!

    Have a great Sunday!

I am headed to brunch at 11am this morning as well. I had a piece of PB toast at 9am so I wouldn’t be too full or too hungry for brunch. That’s my go-to snack when I know I won’t be eating until later in the morning.

Glad you has such a great run yesterday! You rock for alreading completing 13.1 miles!

Aah I love that post-big-run stiffness – enjoy it, cos when you do the real half marathon you definetly won’t feel it nearly half as much! After my last half, I was bouncing off the walls about 1/2hr later :p
    Enjoy your brunch!

I think your smoothie was light on protein and high in carbs.

I am not that fond of breakfast type foods so sometimes I eat a sandwich for breakfast, a slice of wheat bread, turkey and low fat cheese. I get up super early so I am ready for lunch by 11:30!

I don’t usually do brunch it is just at too odd of a time.

Tami… hope you reply your guess of actual protein and carbs in Kath’s smoothie today before Kath hopefully responds with the actual count. I like to learn something new each day, and maybe you will find yourself surprised. My guess is 11 g of protein and 7 g of carbs per serving, i.e., what Kath actually consumed (smoothie recipe was for her and Matt-divide by 2). I don’t want to discourage comments; but when I saw the one from you, I thought what an excellent opportunity for everyone to question if they are really aware of what they are consuming in the nutrient value of what is suggested by the USDA dietary guidelines for living a healthy life, and if they are on target or not. It would be interesting to compare what many people guess as to what it actually was. FUN!

I just put the ingredients into Spark People’s recipe calculator and it came out to over 12 grams of protein and 193 calories. That’s about 26% protein. Seems good to me?

I agree – any morning I eat a really small breakfast, or for some reason eat nothing at all (like when I was a kid and would get nervous before the first day of school or an exam), I’d be STARVING by lunch time, and want to eat and eat all day. A full breakfast with some protein and fat – like oatmeal with fruit and nut butter – tides me over until lunch, and I snack much less. Of course there are some times (particularly one time in the month) that I get much more hungry than usual, but as long as I eat breakfast each day, my moods are better, I think more clearly, and I feel healthier.

    Enjoy your rest day!

I work with so many people who show up to work in the morning on an empty stomach and complain that they don’t have the ‘time’ to stop at the cafeteria (even though they’re ON MEAL PLANS) and grab a to go platter to eat at their desk! 5 minutes less sleep for a wholesome breakfast, the tradeoff seems ridiculous to refuse!!!

Have you learned anything in your courses and whatnot why a large breakfast may cause GI distress/nausea? I cannot eat large breakfasts early, yet I must eat something or I get very faint! A doctor told me I am hyper vasovagal and just really sensitive. Oatmeal makes me so nauseated I cannot eat it (I know sad), so I stick to an egg or peanut butter toast or a small green monster and then must eat 2 hours later! Just curious if you have any clue as to why some body dislikes big breakfasts!

I usually have something like a bowl of cereal / oats for breakfast (1) and then a bowl of frozen fruit with yogurt and granola for breakfast (2). I find that I’m usually starving by noon which is when I can get lunch after classes though. 🙁

Could you taste the nut butter you put in your smoothie by the way? I’d like to try it but I REALLY dislike adding things to food that I end up not tasting (like the tsp of cacao nibs I put in my green monster the other day).

I agree! I don’t know how people can go without breakfast- I start to feel completely dizzy and famished if I don’t eat something/get my coffee within a half hour of waking up! Brunch is always tricky for me- I like Brunch food (and in college here- on weekends brunch starts at 11am) so it’s always weird with what I should do if I wake up at like 9:30! Usually I just have a slightly smaller breakfast- a yoghurt, some fruit, and a little bit of some cereal/small piece of zucchini bread etc just to tide me over- and then I treat brunch a little bit like lunch.

Pre-brunch I try to eat just enough to make “not hungry”. But it’s so hard because I love breakfast food! This morning we went to brunch with friends at 11 am so when I got up at 7:30, I had a piece of whole wheat toast with 1 tbsp PB and 1/2 a banana. After lifting weights for 1/2 an hour and 45 minutes on the elliptical, my stomach was screaming at me for food. So, I had just a bit more…1 kiwi, 1 cutie (like a clementine) and some string cheese. Just enough to leave me hungry again in an hour, but not enough to ruin my appetite.

If I’m eating at 11, I’ll have a normal sized breakfast anyways, and treat it more as a “lunch” than breakfast. Then I have a snack around 3 or 4/ish to hold me over for dinner. By the time you’re actually seated and eating, it will probably be more around 11:30/12 anyways, which is right around lunch time. 😀

Well 100% fruit juices aren’t empty calories – they are just calorie dense and you’re better off eating the whole fruit for the fiber and chewing satiety.

I haven’t ever had a Naked juice, but I’d imagine they would be similar. Just watch your portion.

Breakfast is NECESSARY to well being!

I’m a dancer and a gym rat as well and I adore my foam roller
here’s a tip: if you feel tight in your shoulder blades and/or the front of your chest lie on the roller with it parallel to your spin, it stretches your chest and feels great! Sometimes it just helps me feel aligned before i start my day.
also, thanks for all the great oatmeal combos! My microwave is my stove at college but i can Always do oatmeal! (and egg whites in a microwave egg poacher…) I’ll take what I can get!

    Hey Kath

This is going to sound a bit daft! But did you start adding peanut butter to your oatmeal once you lost the excess weight? or would you recommend it as an addon protein? I am trying to lose weight and would like you opinion.

Also can you please post the whole wheat pizza dough recipe? I stay outside the US, so do not really have a Great Harvest/Trader Joe near by…

      Meg,

I didn’t eat the way I do now when I was losing – but that was more a result of not being as educated on real food and familiar with my body and its preferences. I used to eat a smaller breakfast and a 10AM snack everyday. I didn’t start doing PB in oatmeal until later on, but I did add almonds and walnuts to my oatmeal.

Also, I’ve lost some of my vacation weight of 2009 this spring and I’ve eaten loads of nut butters, so I think that shows they have their place in a healthy diet.

WWPC recipe is on the recipe page.

Maybe I should eat bigger breakfasts instead of a snack in the afternoon. Probably would be less calorie dense. hmm.

    hi Kath!
what I do when having brunch: I have my normal breakfast without the treats- that is: oatmeal without banana, without ANY topping. Just water, oats, milk, pinch of salt.
that fills me up enough till 11, but not so much as the full monty 😉 with all the toppings.
and it leaves me guiltless eating that brunch!

    ciao!
