Lean, Green…

Lemonade!

IMG_0741 (640x427)

So I woke up this morning with aching legs. That race-pace run was really hard on me yesterday. I decided it was a good day to take a rest.

I rolled out of bed and did 20 minutes of YogaDownload and my aches were all gone by the time I landed in savasana. Love yoga!

I came down and since I’ve allowed my juicer to stay out on the counter for 48 hours (I am majorly anti-appliance on the counters!) I decided I should use it again.

Spinach, pear, kale, celery, carrots, lemon, and ginger. I was excited to hear in the Breville you can just put whole lemons and pieces of unpeeled ginger. That’s what’s so cool about juicing – there’s no prep work other than washing everything [and my gosh that is an expensive set of produce there! I can’t afford to juice more than once I week, methinks]

IMG_0734 (640x427)

I LOVED the addition of lemon. When I say the juice was "sooo good" I think there’s definitely a placebo effect here. I mean, it didn’t taste nearly as good as a green monster made with banana and almond butter, but since I know how nutritious it was, I think it tastes better than it might if you told me that say….it was the remains of a compost pile

 this !
I have also acquired the taste for the bitter stinky kale. I like it now! And local kale is SO CHEAP at my grocery store, so that’s one good thing towards the cost!

[Don’t tell Matt I used his favorite Dogfish glass for green juice!!]

IMG_0742 (640x427)

I sipped the juice first and then dug into some kefir + cereal

IMG_0748 (640x427)

Kashi sent me their new flavor of Heart 2 Heart to try. I used to eat H2H all the time! I really loved the cinnamon flavor a lot. It was so warm 🙂

IMG_0737 (640x427)

On top of the ~1 cup kefir bowl was a dollop of BethT‘s plum jam and then maybe half a cup of H2H.

GO DUKE!

IMG_0744 (640x427)

This breakfast was great, but I can’t say I didn’t think about oatmeal at least 3 times *sniff*

IMG_0740 (640x427)

Not sure if I need to warm up with a cup of coffee yet. I’m going to hop into the shower, then walk to the grocery store for some ingredients for a recipe I am developing tonight, and then STUDY until my study date at EarthFare and then MNT exam at 3PM.

1 down, 3 to go!

Your juice is so pretty! I haven’t juiced in awhile and I need to fix that, but the cost was definitely getting to me. I was eating a big bowl of quinoa flakes this morning thinking about how ever since I started eating warm bowls of grains, I just don’t like cereal anymore, unless it’s dry and purely snack food.

I eat a mix of Heart to Heart and Go Lean Crunch every morning (kind of feel the way about it that you feel about oatmeal) and wasn’t aware there is a new flavor! Will definitely look for it next time I hit the grocery store.

The slower cooker Cuban braised beef and peppers was very good. Reminded me a bit of chili though, probably because of the strong cumin flavor. I am wondering if dirty rice could be made in a slow cooker? What do you think?

You are correct, I found several recipes for rice in the slow cooker, but none for dirty rice. I was think that the braised flank steak would be yummy as the protein in a traditional dirty rice meal. I just can’t figure out how to cook the rice/seasonings and the beef together. I don’t think it would work. Maybe a ground beef or turkey would?

    Hey Kath.

I recently started juicing, and my biggest question was whether or not juicing was greater than blending, or vice versa? And the answer I’ve come to understand is that they cannot be compared with each other. Juicing is a quick delivery of nutrients by absorption without having to activate your digestive system and it’s best to drink juice on an empty stomach (for quicker delivery). Blending is the same as sitting down and eating a meal – you receive the nutrients as the food is broken down and digested.

Have fun with it! One of my favorite combos is green lemonade – 6 big stalks kale, one entire head of romaine, an entire peeled lemon and an apple. DELISH.

My fave combination is carrots, gala apples, parsley, a small amount of beet (although I have grown to like it a lot more over time and now put at least a quarter to half) and a chunk of ginger.

    Refreshing and energizing!

As a juicer from years back through today, I have always read that you can’t mix fruits with veggies other than apples…apples are the only ones who can “cross borders”…do you know anything about this? It is supposed to relate to how you digest fruits versus veggies..more of a food combining issue I guess. I usually try to juice on an empty stomach and not eat for an hour or so after juicing for the same reason.

How does the lemon figure into the mix as a fruit that is not an apple?

Your green juice looks great and I will have to try that as well……I have gotten into a juicing rut!

      Jewel,

Well I don’t believe in food combining, so I don’t see why you can’t put other fruits in with the greens. Perhaps it’s an acid/alkaline thing? But lots of pro juice recipes call for lemon, so I don’t know.

Both! I think just knowing your body and how it reacts to different foods is super important. Esp. when it comes to hydration. I’ve noticed that protein does not fill up my upper chamber until I have it with grains. And the ultimate upper chamber filler-upper is cereal and milk or yogurt!
