It’s Amazing I Can Still Type

Now 60% of the fingers on my right hand are injured…watch out thumb and pinky!

IMG_1651 (640x427) (2)

This afternoon I was pulling the garage door down with all of my might while my hand was on a ledge that closes in as the door straightens. Who knew!?

I was paralyzed for a moment with my two fingers flattened – like rubber – in the door. And then, while yelling "OW OW OW OW OW", I was able to lift the door back up.

The trauma of the incident left me sobbing, but I think they are going to be OK.

IMG_0451 (480x640)

Again, I was very very lucky.

Other than being very very sore, they seem to be functioning properly. (And I can type!)

Matt immediately brought me a pot of ice, and I think that helped a lot. I couldn’t look at them for the longest time fearing they’d be black and blue or huge, but I think my soft tissue just absorbed the shock (thank GOODNESS no bones were crunched!)

IMG_0450 (640x480)

The day was on a good note when this happened.

First, Matt and I met Stephanie for a frozen yogurt

IMG_0440 (480x640)

Can I tell you how excited I am that a self serve fro-yo place opened on the downtown mall the same month that I moved here!?

IMG_0439 (640x480)

IMG_0438 (480x640)

AND – it’s BETTER than TCBY and Yoforia. I swear.

The flavors were so REAL tasting. Like the foods they’re supposed to taste like. And it was thicker and creamier than the other places too.

IMG_0441 (480x640)

And the peanut butter was so very authentic. I am a huge fan!

IMG_0442 (640x480)

I got mostly tart with a blob of PB on top with a few chips and some coconut. Nice afternoon snack!

IMG_0445 (480x640)

After yogurt, Steph and I headed to Ashtanga Yoga of Cville for a vinyasa yoga community class (= $5!)

IMG_0447 (640x480)

Although it seems to be a pretty laid back and somewhat small studio, I really liked it. Or perhaps I was just SO very happy to be doing vinyasa again!! It’s been too long. The class was 90 minutes and a bit slower pace than I’d prefer, but I was there for the heart and soul. And there was MUSIC!!!!! Nothing pop or rap like Tanner, but I’m such a music person that ANY music is better than none. It makes me feel like the yoga flow is a dance.

I explained this over dinner last night to Matt: I think that once you’ve found the studio, style and teacher that you 100% jive and fall in love with, it opens you up to appreciate ALL other kinds of yoga that might otherwise just snuff out. Even in classes that I don’t care for, I am still doing yoga! And I still have an appreciation for the practice. And I don’t think I’d feel this way if I hadn’t fell in love with a particular style and studio. Call it…enlightenment

this !

As I was sitting up from savasana, I heard "Kath?" Turns out blog reader Grace practiced right beside me! I hope I didn’t do anything embarrassing during class! Ha. [Hi Grace!] Very exciting!

The photo is blurry because that’s how you feel after yoga 🙂

IMG_0449 (640x480)

OH, and the room was nice and hot and sunny and I was loving it until a girl interrupted the class to tell the teacher to TURN THE AC ON!!?? The room was apparently 84* at the time, and that was plenty warm for me (i was just starting to drip sweat) but the AC was harsh and cold 🙁 Going to try out some more classes at this studio – perhaps even Ashtanga!

While we were out playing today, this was cooking in the crockpot!

IMG_1660 (640x427) (2)

Call it… Smoky Bean Soup

Smoky because of the fire roasted tomatoes that started it off

IMG_1635 (640x427) (2)

1 can tomatoes plus 2 carrots, chopped

IMG_1634 (640x427) (2)

Plus this many okra, chopped into bite sized pieces

IMG_1638 (640x427) (2)

Plus the corn of two cobs

IMG_1645 (640x427)

IMG_1643 (640x427)

Plus a cup of dried Adzuki beans (or black beans!)

IMG_1640 (640x427) (2)

Plus a container of veggie broth, 1 tsp of garlic gold nuggets (or 1 clove), 1 tbsp paprika, and 1.5 tsp of Worcestershire, salt + pepper to taste,

IMG_1636 (640x427) (2)

Set crockpot to simmer (or low) for 4 hours.

IMG_1646 (640x427)

–>

IMG_1648 (640x427)

Makes 3 big or 4 medium bowls of soup. Okra in soup is just the best!

IMG_1656 (640x427) (2)

Top with greek yogurt! Tortilla chips would have been lovely too

IMG_1661 (640x427) (2)

IMG_1653 (640x427) (2)

IMG_1652 (640x427) (2)

Matt and I watched The Blind Side after dinner. Was a nice movie! I liked it (and love Sandra Bullock!) I’d love to now discuss that movie in a college classroom setting please.

Mid-way through my stomach nearly growled!!

I made a snack of half an Alliebar, some dry oats, milk and half a banana

Ouchh!! So sorry about your finger, I know someone who did the exact same thing. Don’t worry, I’ve been very accident prone this week too…maybe its some bug flying around 😉

I have a yogurt place around me that looks identical in the inside as that one you went to, but it’s called something else. Love me some tart fro-yo.

Kath, I had that EXACT finger/garage door accident a few months ago…I too sobbed pretty hard at the shock, and looking at my smashed and bloody fingers just made it worse! They were sore for a few days, but healed rather quickly — a week later, I had totally forgotten about it. I didn’t touch the garage door for nearly a month after that, though!

I’m so sorry–it’s excruciating, I did it once several years ago. Was closing the door by hand (there’s no handle) and the sections came together on my fingers. Yes, I let out a scream, and my husband & SIL didn’t seem to realize what was going on at first. And then the blessed ice. But now I’m afraid of those doors–I basically won’t do anything but pull them up from the bottom!

Oh my goodness! I am glad that nothing is broken-that sounds so painful! A few years ago right around Christmas, I was closing my car door and somehow got the fingers of one of my hands caught in the door as it closed. I had to open the door to get my fingers out and and couldn’t really use that finger/hand at all. I ended up having to get x-rays because we thought it was broken. Fortunately, it wasn’t, but I’ve been super careful with car doors since!
