Feelin’ Spacey

Did you know that when I was younger I used to rearrange my bedroom ONCE A WEEK?

Bedroom

It helped that I lived in a historic house that had huge rooms, but seriously, I moved my room around all.the.time. My bed was placed in every inch of the room at some point or another – including one time when I was playing interior designer and thought my fireplace mantel would make a snazzy headboard.

In my grown up houses there hasn’t been as much opportunity for rearranging, or trust me, I’d be doing it often. It seems in all 3 of our post-graduation dwellings the furniture fits just so, which leaves little room for creative rearranging.

The reason I am telling you all of this is because for the game last night we moved the chair in our living room to the other side of the room:

IMG_3303Blog-2

See its previous position here:

BLOG-0795

While I definitely think the room looks more unbalanced now, and I ultimately think the chair looks better in its original position that blocks accessibility to the storage cabinets behind it and the path for the TV remote, I am obsessed with the new wide open space!

IMG_3304Blog

Something inside of me stirred – and now I want to rearrange the whole house!

On the topic of space, you guys always comment that I don’t have any condiments in our fridge. WE DO!! They are just all on the door.

IMG_3298Blog

I still try to group them by function, and we do keep only ONE of each kind of thing on hand. And I don’t mess around with things like bottled salad dressings anymore because I just think they are gross.

But here’s the breakdown of the door:

IMG_3299Blog-2

IMG_3300Blog

Still, I work hard to keep my fridge open, airy, and CLEAN. Because fridges past most definitely were not any of the above and the drove me crazy! [We also have a chest freezer-turned-fridge in the basement that houses all alcohol, so that helps to clear out the fridge space too.] Also, all of our veggies are in the 2 drawers on the bottom of the fridge, which is why you don’t see them on the open shelves.

Breakfast!!

Matt requested a smoothie today. I wanted something doughy. So I made a doughy smoothie, which just means it has a higher proportion of raw rolled oats to other things.

The Mix

For TWO smoothies

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 6 strawberries
  • 2/3 cup raw rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp chocolate vanilla almond butter by Naturally Nutty
  • 2 handfuls baby spinach
  • Toppings on mind: Hemp Plus Granola + more almond butter

We’ve got a classic rainy day! Sounds like a good time to play in my house – perhaps mop the floors. I still want a Steam Shark but am still unsure of the price tag! Do you have a Steam Shark mop and love it? Do any of you have secrets for sparkling wood floors? Cleaning the floors is my all-time least favorite chore!

I love Bona stuff for wood floors. You can get a kit with the cleaning spray, a microfiber cleaning cloth and a long handle so you don’t have to get down on your hands and knees. I like the idea of steam but my floor is old and I’m afraid the moisture wouldn’t be great for it.

Your floors look SUPER clean already! I love what you did with the chair, the openness looks great 🙂
I used to rearrange my room around a lot too, like every other weekend. We had hardwood floors and my mom finally told me stop sliding my bed across the room because I was scratching the floors. Haha 🙂
It’s rainy here too! And you have now inspired me to clean out my fridge. Thanks!

I like how open your living room looks with the 2 chairs together. Great get-together set up.

Your fridge amazes me. Mine is so stuffed! That’s probably why your grocery bills are more reasonable… I’m going to make an effort to change my Whole Food-addict ways. Starting tomorrow. 😉

OK, we are all big pains in the patootie! You shouldn’t have to justify your fridge. Sorry about that, since I was one of the people who commented on your empty fridge.

Maybe you need to relocate one of your chairs (as lovely as they are) and replace it with a bench-type option for more openness?

Still recommending the steam mop – very environmentally friendly and no streaking.

My niece has a steam mop that I used it on her floors once and was not impressed. I found that as I cleaned and the steam came out, the mop head got soggy and the floors didn’t dry as quickly as promised. I think that would be an issue with any brand of steam mop. I have tile floors so I’m not sure about wooden floor care, but I’m thinking the FloorMate product would be an awesome product. It squirts clean water with cleaner of choice, has scrubbing brushes that work the floors over, then sucks up the dirty water. That one gets my vote!

I think the only way I could be that clean is if I just moved somewhere new and didn’t take anything along with me! You are my cleaning idol. I used to WANT to rearrange my room but I had too much junk underneath my bed that I didn’t want my parents to see 🙂

I told you a long time ago that I thought my daughter was just like you – she is over the top organized, everything has to be in its place, and she routinely gets mad at me if I put the gravy boat in the cupboard where the drinking glasses go when I empty out the dishwasher!

And she rearranges her room. . . . ONCE A WEEK! It’s like my daughter is truly a little Kath! Although she’s not so little anymore – my baby will be 19 tomorrow – yikes!

I am just about to attempt a cake I know she will love – she loves all things coffee – a mocha cake with buttercream frosting and get this . . . coffee bean brittle on top! In my head it turns out, hopefully the real deal will too!

    Enjoy your rearranging day!

Ha! I cracked up when I read that you rearranged your bedroom at least once a week when you were a kid. I did the same thing. Even as an adult, I’m continually moving things around the house and adapting to the seasons and our activities that time of year. Your living room shots are fantastic, great colors and definitely better with the newly open space. I actually was sent your link by a friend who thought I would be interested and was shocked to learn how much we had in common with our cooking style. I’m with you in cooking at home with as much whole foods as possible. Can’t wait to try out some of your recipes. Thanks for sharing!

I have the eureka envirosteam too and I love it. On some flooring it’s hard to tell where you’ve been and if it’s working but the little pad is always really dirty. My kitchen tiles are beige and sorta dirty colored so I can’t tell a huge difference but my bathroom tiles are off white and light and the difference is pretty noticeable. We got ours on amazon and there is a really detailed review written by someone who tried several steam mops before choosing the eureka. Happy shopping!

Hi Kath- I don’t have the Shark steam mop..but I do have the Haan Floor sanitizer..which I think is the same thing ? It is actually awesome, it doesn’t look like it’s doing a whole lot when you are using it..but my tile floor looks great afterwards. Much cleaner than any “manual mop” job! I got it at BBB with a 20% off coupon 🙂
PS. the box says it can be used on wood floors too

My mother has the steam shark and LOVES it! Her entire house is tile. The tile is very clean and the grout is super white. Plus it beats having to use a mop all the time with smelly floor cleaner. Much easier and environmentally friendly to use a steam shark.

we have some sort of shark steam cleaner that came with a whole load of different attachments for different tasks. i have to say, the floor one with the microfibre cloth is THE MOST useful. it is so awesome to clean the kitchen floor without having to use any nasty chemicals, anything smelly, having to scrub hard at anything, or dealing with a bucket and a bunch of dirty water.
steam cleaners rock. plus i can use it to steam the couches, the mattress, the carpet, curtains, anything. super useful.

I am on my third Steam Shark for our hardwood floors. Unfortunately the first two had wiring issues. I debated buying another since I was worried that the problem would repeat itself but when I found it on sale at Canadian Tire for 40% off it was worth it to me. I like how it cleans and find it quite versatile. It is a little bit of a pain to store because of it’s size and I am impatient when it comes to letting it heat up. :o)

so, thanks a lot and no thanks a lot, i’m not sure where i stand yet!

I was the same way as a kid–I always rearranged my bedroom. I also switched bedrooms a lot. In a span of 9 years, I had 4 different bedrooms in our house. The only one I didn’t have was my sister’s. She kept the same room the entire time we lived there and never once rearranged her room. That would drive me crazy.

I have a steam shark mop and I have to say it makes my floors sparkle more than anything else. I really like that I don’t need cleaning products and that I can just throw the cloths in the wash! I splurged on mine at Bed Bath & Beyond when it was on sale and I had gift cards from our wedding. I’m really glad we invested. And my husband loves it too because it’s like a cleaning power tool, so it’s never hard to convince him to use it. He even came home with the little steam shot one day for spot cleaning. It’s especially useful for crevices and refrigerator shelves! 🙂

If you’re going to get a steam mop, I’d recommend getting a Bissell, not a Shark. We did a lot of research before buying one and the Shark doesn’t get hot enough to really clean. The Bissell does a pretty good job but sometimes it takes two rounds to get everything as clean as I want.

I’d also second Bona products for hardwood floors – really great and the number one thing my hardware store recommended. They have cleaners for tile too.

My grandparents both just moved to a nursing home, so I was fortunate to get a few small pieces of furniture and it’s been so fun to rearrange a tiny bit with items that really mean a lot to me.

My fridge is just like yours. I don’t usually have many leftovers and I clean my fridge once a week. The door is also organized in a similar way.

I did a ton of research before buying a Eureka EnviroSteamer about a month ago. Just read this one review of a bunch of steam mops on Amazon and it helped immensely: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2J8JRXPEBJAY6/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B001LYFBHG&nodeID=&tag=&linkCode=j

I do like our steam mop, but you still need to be sure that you’ve vacuumed/swept really well, because as with any mop, it just pushes debris around. Good lucK! 🙂

I have an H2o steam mop – probably not the one I would have picked, but I received it as a wedding gift. Even though this particular brand has some cons (short cord, small water resevoir, and no attachments available on my version), I love steam mopping the house. The key is to purchase enough terry cloth mop covers to swap them out as you clean the floor. I have engineered hardwood in every room except bath and beds and it does a great job, as long as I change out the covers as I go along (I’m a little obsessive about it). FWIW my biweekly housecleaner loves it too and mentioned she would tell her boss about possiby getting steam mops instead of using the old traditional mop and bucket.

I use vinegar and water on our hardwood floors too. It’s inexpensive, doesn’t have all kinds of nasty ingredients, and does a great job. Our grandma’s were no dummies!

LOL! Love that you once had your bed *in front of the fireplace*…. I used to LOVE rearranging furniture when I was little, too… unfortunately though, space was always a constraint. So my little 6 yr old self could only drag the bed across the carpet so far before getting tired… and leaving it where ever it landed! My mom was amused many-a-time.

    Hello!

I just want to say I stumbled upon your blog this morning and I LOVE IT! I love that you’re a dietitian and you have such a great story (I’m an RD too!), I love that you live in Charlottesville (I’m from Arlington, VA and fell in love with Charlottesville when my husband did an accelerated master’s program there last year), and most of all I love your recipe/meal ideas (even though I haven’t gotten to try them yet-they look yummy!). Keep up the great work! 🙂

Since my hubby and I moved in together when we got engaged we’ve always had small NYC apartments so our furniture just fits perfectly into the spaces. I wish I could switch things up every once in a while, but it just doesn’t work. Your breakfast looks great. I have to try that combo some time.

I love your organization! Over the next two months, I am getting rid of at least 75% of what I have now. I’ll be putting my stuff in storage and going on a cross country road trip!… and wow it is intimidating to get rid of so much stuff!

I, too, used to rearrange my bedroom all the time! I grew up in a farmhouse in Iowa, and I still can’t believe I used to fit two beds, two dressers, and all of me and my sister’s toys into one room — and never have the same configuration twice.

But now, I live in a small house in California (Bay Area) and there is pretty much ONE WAY the furniture fits in every room. Boo!!

It’s raining here, too — and a prescribed day off from my triathlon training. I’m cleaning out closets!

I’ve lived my whole married life with hard wood floors (because we raised our kids in Asia) and the #1 secret to clean wood floors is simple: we don’t wear shoes in our house! In fact, taking our shoes off before we come inside keeps the whole house cleaner so I highly recommend it.

Loved your rain. You are so blessed. We have 0.11″ year to date, but it is only year three of our drought. We have the Eureka Enviro Hard-Surface Floor Steamer ($70.00 Amazon). It is wonderful and leaves very little dampness after use along with nice clean floors. We have no wood, only plush carpet and porcelain tile in major living areas, about 50/50. The original Shark had many poor reviews; but the updated model may work for your situation. We tired of chemically induced warm feet after using chemical junk like the swifters. Wasn’t good for the Chihuahuas either. Good luck!

My mom bought all of us “girls” the steam shark in 2009 for Christmas. So my sister and I along with 5 of my sister-in-laws. We were all very excited. As much as I like how my wood floors looked afterward, the mop itself did not hold up very long! Mine lasted about 3 months, but I have a larger home and 6 kids. So I thought that I had just used mine too much!! Last year at Christmas we were all chatting and everyone was afraid to tell my mom that their mops were also no longer working!! I would suggest a different brand!

P.S. I LOVE an organized fridge!

My two cents….if it hasn’t been mentioned before….is that you should keep your eggs in the coldest part of your fridge. The door is opened and closed quite a bit, and eggs and milk etc. are then exposed to differences in temperature throughout the day, thus contributing to a higher rate of spoilage. I keep my eggs in the crisper, or if no room’s in there, then one floor up under the meat keeper. 🙂

I don’t think anyone should feel ‘bad’ that their homes are less clean or less organized.it is greatg to be orderly and also nice to relax and let things go for a few weeks.there is a healthy balance between being buried in junk and obsessive compulsive. one person’s ‘messy kitchen’ is another person’s ‘just fine.’ i have also found that mineral oil from bbb works great on my floors.
