Brookfill

After a few days of rain and clouds, I think everyone in Cville was out celebrating the GORGEOUS September weather tonight!!

IMG_0385-2Blog

I left the bakery and headed to the new house for a few appointments. Given my public life, we’re getting a killer security system in the new place. Don’t even try to tap on the window – it’s all covered. It’s a little expensive, but also something we should have gotten 2 houses ago and I don’t think we will regret the piece of mind.

More photos were requested, yes?

Living room mid-paint!!!

Before:

IMG_4654-2Blog

IMG_0376-2Blog

The gray wall that I love but will be painted over. The same color is in the dining room and we’re leaving that one.

IMG_0378-2Blog

While I was there, I had a snack – KERF reader Kim brought me a few of Emily’s “Perfect Vegan Cookies” today at the bakery!

IMG_0374-2Blog

Yum!! They tasted a bit bananay – was there banana in the recipe Kim!? Or was that my imagination…

IMG_0380-2Blog

At 5:30, Faith came over! And then we walked downtown. PERFECT Friday!

IMG_0384-2Blog

First stop was Market Street Wine Shop for a little wine tasting and brie cheese eating.

IMG_0381-2Blog

Then we went to the Pavilion and chilled and talked in the grass. It was so very relaxing!

IMG_0387-3Blog

Matt finished work and joined us, and we said goodbye to Faith and headed to find dinner. I had a Groupon to Brookville, so that’s where we landed.

Neither of us wanted a full glass of wine, so we decided to share. They were kind enough to split it for us – with heavy pours!

[Note the ball jars!!]

IMG_0388-2Blog

We decided to share 3 courses rather than get big entrees for us both.

We started with a beautiful heirloom tomato salad –

IMG_0391-2Blog

IMG_0392-2Blog

Followed by an AWESOME poached egg, pepper and corn ragu.

IMG_0393-3Blog

LOVE poached eggs!

IMG_0394-2Blog

We were given chilled watermelon soup for tasting!

IMG_0390-2Blog

And split this amazingly buttery tomato-topped local pork belly for our entrée.

IMG_0397-2Blog

I gave Matt 2/3 and took 1/3. This was so rich, but also so flavorful!

IMG_0398-2Blog

It was tough to say no to dessert, but we decided we were plenty full.

We went to wish our employee Rosemary a very happy birthday at a nearby restaurant –

And then Matt walked a mile back to the bakery to get his car and I biked home alone! Scary, but this night was so refreshing.

Someone was hosting a marshmallow campfire party and did not invite me!

Happy Friday! I still remember those concerts from when I was in preschool and I would go with my parents. 😀 I wish we’d had watermelon soup then though….that sounds amazing! I love getting a few appetizers instead of an entree. It’s easier to get smaller dishes, try different, things, and share. I should remember to do that more often!

Security is a MUST. Whether you’re a popular blogging celeb or just your average (me). I hope that was easier than the cable fiasco. Congrats on the new house, you must be enjoying the same amazing weather that rolled into Charleston this week! The weekend is supposed to be amazing, perfect for moving! Sure beats rain and/or humidity. Good luck with everything! =)

I actually commented on that post of Emily’s and asked her about the banana in the cookies…b/c she used a full banana in them and I wondered if they would taste banana-ey or not.

She never got back to me on that one…

But now I have my answer.

And the painting looks awesome! Wow…so much progress!

      Hi Amy,
The necklace was given to me by my mom when I moved to Peru. She said it’s a symbol for protection or something and the wave was appropriate because one reason we were moving there was for my husband to surf! Unfortunately it has no brand on it and I believe she bought it in a little boutique in our tiny WV hometown. It’s made out of bone and came on a piece of string…hopefully you will come across one someday!

Now, I really want to try watermelon soup!

Security: my church two nights ago had all three of our HVAC units stolen from the grounds! It was a pretty big operation (aka the people who could boost HVAC’s need to know how to install HVACS…sad that people with that level of marketable skills are thieving). Of course, they were outside, so the security system? Not all that helpful 🙁

Security systems are kinda a pain (according to this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/01/your-money/household-budgeting/01wealth.html), about 80% of security alarm warnings are false alarms and they cost local police departments quite a bit per year (though, a recent development in some communities has the police department charge home owners $75 per false alarm…prolly not in cville, tho). It also talks about its important for people with public lives to have security systems (they site Martha Stewart’s security company starts at rates of $7,000 per month!!!). I totally understand why someone with a growing online/in-print personality would want to get a security system, so please don’t take sharing the article as some kind of criticism in your case, its just that in general I think that they can give people a false sense of safety or alternatively, a false sense of danger, like rapist/murders/etc are just around every corner. As with most things, its best to find a happy medium–be cautious, but don’t freak yourself out…and remember, that people often victim blame because they like to think that they are invulnerable to the awfulness of this world, but it is always the bad guy’s fault.

Okay, that was heavy, back to the watermelon soup–is it really just a watermelon smoothie of sorts?
