Biking Helps With Digestion

Ugggggggggg. Even 10.6 miles of biking can’t undo the amount of fullness I am feeling. I went to tonight’s party with the best of intentions…until I saw the bakery cake!!

DSC04647

Karen invited us to a party she had for the couples who live in her condo building. We had a great time, but were also the youngest there by at least 20 years?! But sometimes adults can be the most entertaining 🙂

The husband and I have implemented Fuel Free Weekends. The past few weekends and counting we have started a rule that IF we can bike to a place, we are required to. There are two exceptions:

1) A hot date where I need to dress up

2) RAIN

I totally did not want to bike to Karen’s, but it was 5.3 miles, about a 50 minute bike ride, and I knew with good weather I could not refuse. So we did. And I’m glad we did. But I wasn’t glad at about mile 4 on the way there when I started to break a sweat and my hair was flattened by my helmet!

On Karen’s stylish chaise post-bike ride –

DSC04648

Since I didn’t finish lunch until 2pm today, I skipped my snack and decided to just eat when I got there (around 6:30, so not that late). But after our bike ride, I was STARVING!!! I nibbled on about an ounce’s worth of almonds taken from this serving bowl –

DSC04650

Karen had our favorite wines to serve and I couldn’t choose between the Ferrai-Carrano Fume Blanc and Frei Brothers Chardonnay.

DSC04652

I decided on the buttery Frei Bros! Knowing I always eat more when I drink more, my plan was to have one glass. I ended up having about 1.5 – pretty good!!

DSC04656

Then a cheese platter came out…. my downfall #1

DSC04657

Cheese 1

Cheese 2

DSC04666

And the probability that I had more nears 100%

 this !
I had about 2 more crackers with cheese. I LOVE CHEESE!

I also always enjoy looking at our wedding album book when I go to Karen’s 🙂

DSC04665

For dinner we had Karen’s famous French Beef, a casserole/lasagna with pasta, sour cream, cream cheese, ground beef, tomato sauce and cheese. Mmm! Plus a mish-mosh salad with tons of fruit, craisins, nuts (and raw onions 👿 ) and baguette with a little butter –

DSC04670

From above –

DSC04668

Seconds (which I totally didn’t need)

DSC04676

Then I had wine #2 (and I also had a few sips of the husband’s as he tasted different kinds). This was Mark West Pinor Noir, another favorite! (Plus another smoked gouda with cracker!)

DSC04677

After that I switched to diet tonic and lime. I could have easily kept sipping wine, but I knew it was time to switch over.

DSC04678

THEN came the CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DSC04683

And the Blondies we made –

DSC04687

Uggggggggglajslajsdlajsdfj. I ate it all, plus Karen’s icing!!!

DSC04682

My stomach was hanging over my jeans the whole ride home, but I admit I do feel much better after some biking digestion!!

Not sure if tomorrow’s plan for fancy French toast is going to happen. We might need to save it for Sunday! I’m in the mood for water and fruit right now.

G’night!

This party looks great…even if it was with “old” people 😉
And that cake looks soooo good! Is it carrot cake?

I must say, you have a great amount of willpower and you eat so well most of the time… which is why I find it so discouraging when you eat at an event like this with almost perfect moderation and yet you convey that you feel guilty/regret/overindulgent when you really did not eat that much. I hope that you do not take this is a criticism. I certainly don’t mean it that way, and so I hope that this comes out civilly (as I intend – I respect you immensely) – I am merely expressing my thoughts.

Agreed , Alex – it all looks great and worth it – especially considering you got in a lot of exercise today! Don’t feel guilty – you are exactly what I think about when I think of what it’s like to indulge … in moderation! Have a great weekend!

I find that I sometimes feel most full when I bike–I think it makes my digestion kind of wonky (though I can feel the positive difference when I wake up the next morning).

Everything looks lovely! It sounds like you guys had fun…learning to exercise moderation is an ongoing lesson, huh? Hope you feel better/more digested when you wake up tomorrow!

a fun fact for you, kath, and all fellow winos:
i am a medical student, and in my biochemistry class this morning my professor spoke at length about the purported benefits of alcohol. apparently these peak at the 1.5 glass mark (where a glass=6oz), and actually don’t have any statistical significance until that point. so go ahead and feel good about rocking 9oz a day!! your body thanks you 🙂

i totally know how you feel because like you i LUUUV good food but am not a fan of the ‘stuffed’ feeling 🙂 i think that overall you did really well though with moderation while enjoying things that are really worth it — good wine, CHEESE (omg i am with you that cheese is pretty much the best thing ever), and dessert among friends. but i do understand feeling a mixed bag of satisfaction and regret! i bet you will wake up today feeling much better once most of it has digested!

    Justy2003 ,
It was carrot cake and Jana there’s no recipe because it was from a local catering company 🙁

    Alex ,
I appreciate your nice comment, but there was nothing moderate about the way I was feeling when I left that party. My stomach was STUFFED and I felt horrible. I slept horrible. I have a sugar hangover. I should have had half the piece of cake, skipped Karen’s icing, skipped the seconds on the food. While I agree that it seemed like a “normal” splurge event, the way my body was feeling was telling me 100% = you ate way too much and I am mad. So my thoughts were much more regret than guilt. Not about the calories (because I know I can easily bump back from that) but because I did not listen to my body and felt so sick.

    EllCee ,
I guess I should have added that I knew it was temporary and would be back to normal in the morning. It was the comfort I was complaining about.

    Sherri Clute,
I don’t know the French Beef recipe. It was not a healthy one at all though. I’d recommend the turkey-goat cheese-pasta dish we’ve made over it:
    https://www.katheats.com/?page_id=6977

    Maureen ,
Blondies were the runner up next to that cake. They also kind of stuck together in transport despite waxed paper between them so they are sticky little blondes!

Ah Kath, you make me laugh. The onions! GRRR. Hilarrrrrious. And I adore cheese too. It’s a dangerous thing for me! Savory over sweet right here!! Aka cheese over chocolate/candy!

Though is that carrot cake? Because that looks amazing. One of my all time favs. After competitions my family always would buy me a carrot cake from Whole Foods to celebrate with. DELISH.

Happy Saturday!!! And I love your biking…in fact I’m jealous of your biking…though I live next to some busy busy streets so I’m not sure how much biking I would do even if I could.

    Wow, can you say ramble?

    Kath,

I am glad that you explained your feelings – and I completely understand. I think that makes much more sense; I often have the same regrets when I don’t do a great job listening to my hunger/fullness cues. I would like to reiterate, though, that I think you do a fantastic job of listening to your body 99% of the time, so I guess I just wish you (or anyone in such a situation) wouldn’t be so hard on yourself!

That cake looks TO DIE FOR. Yum! I think it’s great that you are trying not to use fuel on the weekends. I wish I could do it more where I live, but they are about 10 years behind in things so we don’t have a lot of bike paths. And I know I will get hit if I bike on a busy street. 🙂

Not that you ever had anything less than pretty skin, but lately you are (to use a way overused word) GLOWING. Esp. in that color shirt, your skin just pops. Whatever you’re doing, exercising, eating, etc. it seems to be working! Cheers!

I applaud your Fuel Free Weekends as well. I live in NYC so it’s pretty rare that I drive anywhere, but when I do travel I try to stick to subways & walking instead of taxis. Cheers!
