And The Thunder Rolls

Scary! We’ve got the perfect storm out there – midsummer Thunder + Lightening! I thought it was just our neighbors truck revving until I started to see the flash of lights every few seconds. Now it’s rattling the house!

Now, where did I leave off?

Around 2:00 Kelsey and I decided to do YogaDownload in our classroom! It was empty and we closed the door and turn down the lights and did a great 30 minute Hip Opening Flow (I think #4). I can see pre-Foodservice yoga becoming a regular activity….

Here are all of my packed snacks. PB Larabar, YouBar, Strawberries, Trail Mix, Apple.

IMG_1914 (1024x768)

I ate the Strawberries at 5:00 and then cracked open the YouBar at 6:30. But much to my disappointment, the YouBar was all glued to the wrapper. It would have been gross to be pulling it off with my teeth during class, so I put it away and got out the LaraBar. I’m not sure what I’ll do with the YouBar goo. Oatmeal? (I didn’t eat the trail mix or apple.)

I did get one of my tests back and was very disappointed 😥 A lot of the questions were numbers + stats, and I got them wrong. And a few were just strange. Bummer.

But I came home to a fun surprise!

IMG_1918 (1024x768)

Pop Chips!!

IMG_1919 (1024x768)

Have you heard of them? All the info: Popchips.com. These girls LOVE them. (And I have never seen a more high quality music video!!!!)

So I knew I had leftover navy beans on the menu tonight, but I wanted to try the Pop Chips too, so I made a tasting plate meal. I tried the Salt + Pepper ones to start with a simple flavor:

IMG_1920 (1024x768)

I don’t think I have an opinion yet. I’m going to save it for my next bag. I didn’t dislike them, but they weren’t the most amazing things ever. They were really kind of like pork rinds! But I can see how they will grow on me, so I’ve got to try another flavor in the next few days.

IMG_1928 (1024x768)

1 bag (this pile) was only 100 calories –

IMG_1927 (1024x768)

I turned about half a cup of navy beans into insta-baked beans with some Country Bob’s, ketchup and Worcestershire.

IMG_1922 (1024x768)

And incorporated some veggies with a Sabra hummus bowl –

IMG_1923 (1024x768)

Hello broccoli!

IMG_1924 (1024x768)

Per Wednesday late-night solo dinner fashion, I photographed and plopped myself on the couch with a House Hunters. I was really hungry when I sat down at 9:00 and now am too full to want to get in bed at the moment!

IMG_1921 (1024x768)

And had this piece of White Chocolate Cherry Swirl for dessert. I set off the smoke alarm and hopefully did not wake the Baker, who went to bed at 8:30!

Bottomless Pit?

I definitely notice a difference in my hunger levels throughout the month and this blurb from this month’s SHAPE suggested why:

“The International Journal of Obesity found that women taken in between 90 to 500 extra calories during the two weeks before their period. ‘Our research shows that a woman’s stomach empties about 25 percent faster in the two weeks before her period than it does in the weeks immediately following it,” says Ixchel Brennan…This may be due to a rise in the levels of the hormone progesterone right after ovulation.'”

G’night guys!

Yoga in empty classrooms?! Now THAT is productive. I won’t tell you what we used to do in empty classrooms in law school 😉

You ate potato chips for dinner in front of the tube…I’m proud!

The first time I heard of popchips was when I watched that video! I love the Whatever Hollywood girls. One time I saw one of them walking down the street in Chicago (she was visiting) and I felt star struck, lol!

That same thing happened to me with YouBars. So disappointing.

That video is hilarious! Cute. I like Pop Chips – I find they are good when I want some kind of “crunch” on the side of a sandwich (sometimes a girl needs some crunch!), but they aren’t really satisfying. Whole Foods has an organic version of these, too – they’re a little less puffy, but they have a cinnamon flavor which totally reminds me of those cinnamon crisp chip things I used to get at Taco Bell when I was a kid. Man, that was a loooong time ago 🙂

I totally agree with Shape. I also read you burn an extra 500 calories due to all the extra work your body does to menstruate(sorry ew gross word). I get that bottomless pit feeling! Then magically 2 weeks later my jeans fit loose again!
Also, I want to try pop chips so bad, but they are like 3 dollars per little bag. I love chips likes that though. One day I will splurge and give them a try.

That’s interesting news (from Shape). So, is it OK to eat those extra calories? Do we actually burn the extra calories, or does your stomach just empty faster, thus making you feel hungrier even if you don’t need the energy?

I think they are calories you need because you are burning them quicker. Your metabolism speeds up during that period of time. Therefore, you need the extra kcals.

    Cates ,
I believe that I have heard in both Clinical Nutr. and general worldly readings that there is a spike in metabolism during the second half of the cycle, but I am not 100% sure.

    Anon ,
Sounds like you might need a smaller size. I had to buy a size small because mine came with a medium that was too big. I also find that wearing a tank top with a built in bra along with a sports bra helps keep it nice and snug.

    Meaghen ,
It’s a Great Harvest bread, so unfortunately he can’t share the recipe.

    Allison K,
I would think that the synthetic progesterones would have a similar effect – increasing appetite AND metabolism, but I am not sure.

    theoddbod ,
No, I just ate ’em, but they sure could be dipped.

Most of the stores here in Silicon Valley are carrying Pop Chips, but I’ve seen them cheapest at Whole Foods (who often carries them at 2 for $4. I really like the bbq ones! I don’t care for the regular. I thought I would like the salt and pepper ones but maybe I wouldn’t… Try the bbq ones though, I really liked the flavor. Granted, the texture is a bit pork-rind-ish, but they would definitely get me through a mad potato chip craving!
