Adventures In Babysitting

Would you look at this cute little wiggle worm!?

IMG_6114Blog

He was my pre-Valentine’s date. I gave his mama a little break so she could get housework and errands done. And I had fun playing with Finn.

Although I have to say it would have been easier if my breasts produced milk 🙂 Little guy was hungry! We had fun in between feedings though (and when Holly left I fed him with a pumped bottle). We read stories and played with toys and made funny faces together. He even learned to stick his tongue back out at me! Lots of smiles too. I just love babies!!! Always have.

IMG_6116Blog

When le bebe was napping, I ate an apple and read some Hunger Games. (I read some aloud to him too but my voice gave out before Finn’s attention span for Katniss and Peeta did!)

IMG_6123Blog

Holly sent me home with some BISCOFF and York Patties!! I had a patty on my ride home 🙂

IMG_6162Blog

I raced home just in time to make it to date night. Hopefully our last childless Valentine’s Day!?

IMG_6129Blog

When we went to Orzo a few weeks ago for restaurant week, they gave us a golden ticket to come back any night for the 3-courses-for-$26 deal. It wasn’t valid on V-day, so we just went a night early!

Love the complimentary hummus + pitas!

IMG_6130Blog

Matt got a wine flight. I took a sip of each to taste them out.

Gosh I would LOVE to drink a whole bottle of wine right now – hangover and all! I miss it so much. We were talking over dinner that even though I don’t really want to get drunk, even when the baby comes I won’t be able to have more than a glass or so – unless I want to waste breast milk. And it’s also probably not very responsible to be too tipsy with a child. So our days of wild beer festivals might be over – unless a grandma volunteers to babysit!

But that is OK, really, because I’m sure that giving up that lifestyle will be 100% worth it when the time comes.

IMG_6132Blog

Course I was Calamari and Shrimp Beignets in a dipping sauce. These were awesome!! Like seafood hushpuppies.

IMG_6134Blog

Matt had the mussels, which I got last time!

IMG_6135Blog

The best part of doing restaurant week all over again (and Orzo is the BEST because they offer nearly their whole menu) is that we know just what dishes to order!!

IMG_6141Blog

Case in point, I heard raving reviews of the Hangar Steak last time. I’m not normally a big steak person, but I decided to take a risk and get it. And it was FAB!! Juicy and tender and the carrot coulis on the side was excellent.

IMG_6138Blog

Loved the potato gratin too – it was a good match for my cheesy potato craving.

IMG_6145Blog

Matt had Pork Belly + Shrimp, which was divine, but not as good as mine!

IMG_6143Blog

Last time Karen had the Lemon Cake so I knew I’d like it despite rarely ordering lemon desserts. Really I just wanted the whipped cream!

IMG_6148Blog

Matt had a [blurry] chocolate chip cookie with vanilla gelato and gave me the best bite!

IMG_6149BlogIMG_6125Blog

When we returned home, we exchanged gifts.

A sweet cart from Matt [hand painted] that even mentioned babies!! Needless to say he knows how to make my heart flutter : )

IMG_6155Blog

I also got this one from my parents. Babies on the brain, huh?

IMG_6156Blog

Matt and I aren’t big gift givers, but we decided to do something small for Valentine’s. I got him a bike shirt from Blue Ridge Eco Shop

IMG_6157Blog

And a peanut butter buckeye from Feast, which I get for him whenever I go there – he loves them!

IMG_6158Blog

I told him all I wanted was my very own box of chocolates.

I’m sure this will make many of you angry, but I love to take one bite of all of them and then go back for a second bite and a third in rounds. It’s the best way!!

Matt got me Gearhart’s Chocolates, a famous local Cville chocolatier.

Unlike Jim Gaffigan’s Gamble Chocolates, none of these contained toothpaste! [Listen to 3:38 on! Most hilarious comedian ever.]

IMG_6152Blog

TWO LAYERS!!!!!! What a fun surprise!

IMG_6154Blog

And in true V-day fashion, we tasted one bite of a handful of them. Can’t wait to go back for that second bite later!!

Happy Chocolate Day!

That’s so nice that the restaurant offers pita and hummus instead of a bread basket – what a good variation! I wish more restaurants did that. I’m super impressed that Matt hand-painted that card, it’s so pretty! And I LOVE buckeyes – my mom and grandma always make them at Christmas. I’ve made them once but they just weren’t as good as when someone else makes them 🙂

    What a cutie!
I always followed the rule of thumb that as soon as I couldn’t feel the effects of the alcohol any more then it was OK to breastfeed. Hopefully you’ll get a good sleeper so you’ll be able to have more than a drink after bed time. Neither of mine slept through the night until 10-11 months. But you are totally right that it’s all worth it! I don’t think I would have let my husband drink wine in front of me though–thankfully for us he’s the beer drinker and I’m the wine drinker and neither of us usually order the other, so I never got jealous.

That was the rule I got told too, from everyone from my pediatrician and midwife to my mom lol. For me that meant if I fed the baby, had a margarita or two I could nurse within 2-4 hours depending on how strong the drinks were. Once your supply is established you do not need to pump and dump. Total myth there. If you’re lucky enough to have a baby that actually sleeps at night (or at least 5 hour stretches) there’s not much to worry about.

Plus they sell breast milk testing strips if you’re super paranoid! My congrats on the new baby gift has been a bottle of wine and a box of those since I found out the existed.

I’m a pretty laid back parent, especially the 2nd time around, but I don’t think I ever drink enough that I’d feel the need to pump and dump. I just don’t drink that much. And beer is supposed to be good for your supply! 🙂

That’s a great gift, I may have to keep that in mind for baby showers.

“even when the baby comes I won’t be able to have more than a glass or so – unless I want to waste breast milk.”

Oh hey! Great news on that front. Breasts aren’t just a receptacle of milk– they’re full of “alive” breastmilk and most of the milk you make will be while baby is on the breast (especially after 12 weeks). Alcohol passes out of breastmilk just like it passes out of the blood– after one hour per glass, you’re good. If baby’s out for the count for two hours, go ahead and have two glasses! Conservatively you may wish to wait longer than that. Do some googling and see for yourself.

The concept that one need “pump and dump” while drinking is a fallacy– and a good thing, too, because you don’t want to be on the pump any more than you have to be. 🙂

Congrats and keep up the great blogging.

I was going to post the same thing too!

No need to pump and dump
        From Kellymom.com

In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom’s blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom’s body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.

I’ve never thought of eating chocolates in that fashion as a way to enjoy them round after round. I quite like that idea. I usually eat the ones I don’t like first–or give them away–and then enjoy my favourites one by one.

And Finn is one ridiculously cute baby! All this baby talk on various blogs has got my brain in baby mode but the fiance and I aren’t quite there yet. Someday, maybe.

Awww! That baby is super cute! 🙂 Looks like a great Valentine’s Day date!! I love getting a box of chocolates like that! I always take a bite out of ones that I think look good and pray that it’s one that I like. It’s fun that way.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who eats my chocolates like this! Everyone thinks I’m nuts. But it is the only way to go, I 100% agree.

That’s hilarious! I honestly never thought of eating chocolates that way. It’s funny how ingrained stuff is – like I know we would have gotten in trouble for that as a kid, so it just never occurred to me as a viable option as an adult. But what’s the harm? Have fun!

Don’t forget, your baby has two parents, so you can take turns getting drunk. 🙂

    Finn is one cutie patootie!

Hah, I was going to say – I DID used to take a bite out of a chocolate, and if it was one of those weird flavors, I’d just give it to my brother! HE’D eat any flavor! 😀

Just curious how well done your meat was. It looks pretty pink but it could be the lighting. One thing I missed while pregnant was eating stek as rare as I usually get it. Not tht you need to follow all the ‘what not to eat hen pregnant’ guidelines. I swear if you did everything ‘they’ say you wouldn’t feel safe eating anything!

Yeah it was medium rare. Probably a little pinker than advised.

I do the same with chocolates. I can make one last 2 days! And, we lattes and cappuccinos…they’re so sweet, so I’ll get one on the way to school, get a 1/2 cup of coffee and add the the sweet drink to it for 2 days!

What a fun date night! Especially being able to end it with your very own box of chocolates. I’m all about tasting each one first before deciding which are worth eating the whole piece. Life is too short to waste it on yucky chocolates, if I do say so myself. Hmm, maybe I should have had a Valentine’s Day shirt printed with that saying 🙂

ha! This pg lady also requested a box of chocolates for Valentines Day. I’ve never wanted one before and can’t see myself making my way through a whole box next year but I’m enjoying this as a treat.

I just have two things to say:
    1. Congratulations (so much!!) on the bebe a-coming and
    2. I do the same thing to my chocolates 🙂
