Mmmm….Wedding Cake

cake-slices.jpg

I sure do wish I had a slice of our cake to have for breakfast today…..Chambord-French Vanilla Cake with Raspberry filling and Vanilla Buttercream. Mmmm!

I made this anniversary video over the weekend! It’s 7 and a half minutes of highlights from the big day. I wish the quality was better, but YouTube kept me to 100mb of blurriness.

Highlights From 6.2.07

We’re celebrating today with a romantic lunch uptown at Sonoma Modern Kitchen (our favorite!), which seems appropriate since this time last year we were honeymooning in Sonoma.

In other news, we were up early this morning for a before-work workout. I did the Stairmaster, a cool down on the Squirrelliptical, and some upper body lifting and abs.

Before we left, we both had some of the Panda Puffs I picked up at Trader Joe’s for the husband, w ho loves anything peanut butter. They were very good! I wouldn’t eat them as a breakfast to fill me up for the day, but as a snack, they’re perfect. Actually, though, the milk was a little heavy in my stomach during the workout. I’ll use a little less next time.

dsc00180.JPG

For breakfast I reheated a serving of steel cut oats I made yesterday with a little milk to rehydrate, half a peach, 1/2 a cup of pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, and some granola on top. It was actually really bland, so I added some maple syrup to the edges, which helped some. I missed my banana-infused oats!

dsc00182.JPG

dsc00181.JPG

I’m still feeling the coffee withdrawal in my neck and shoulders. Blarg!!

And for a little more fun, here are some more wedding day photos 🙂

    Kelly,
We celebrated last weekend at Bald Head with the cake and flowers, Saturday was kind of the anniversary because it was the same Saturday, and today is the official anniversary. Why NOT celebrate as much as possible!?

    Hi Kath (or others too),
Do you have any advice for someone who just can’t find anything much to enjoy about exercise? I am already petite and eat healthy, so for now I am happy with how my body looks. I know I should be exercising for better health in the long run, but that is not a very good in the moment motivator. I do enjoy walking, but get the impression that’s not “good enough.” I have never been an athletic person and other exercises like running and other cardio just feel hard, uncomfortable, unpleasant. Where do you find the “fun” to get you motivated everyday? Over the years I have tried many times to get into an exercising routine, but I never last more than a few weeks using sheer will power, because I simply don’t enjoy it. Anyone know if there is a way to change that mind set?

Don’t worry, Kath. My fiance and I have the following anniversaries:

    Meetaversary (the day we met)
Phoneaversary (the first time we talked on the phone)
    Dateaversary (our first date)
Realdateaversary (our first date was an impromptu dinner 2 nights before we had planned, so this was the “real” first date)
    *ahem*aversary
    Leaseaversary (aka cohabaversary or roommataversary)
    Engagaversary
and our poodle’s “birthday,” which is when we met him (a few months before we got him). That one’s 2 years tomorrow!
    and there are probably more…

And we mention at least 1 of them every month! I say, enjoy it and show appreciation for each other as much as you can 🙂

Kath, Happy Anniversay! You usually only drank one cup of coffee a day, right, and not a gigantic starbucks cup full? Could the achy feeling be something else (not enough water, muscle soreness from exercise, or something else) besides caffeine withdrawal? You could be super sensitive to caffeine, of course, but I just wondered since you didn’t seem to be having so much of it before you stopped to still be having withdrawal effects. I think everyone’s probably different though. I drink coffee (mornings only) probably 3-4 days a week and when I don’t have it for a few days I sometimes feel sluggish, but never achy.

Your wedding photos are gorgeous! And you’re really tech-savvy for putting together the highlights video. You and the husband are so perfect together!

I can’t eat oatmeal without bananas anymore, either! It’s just not sweet enough. And if the banana is too starchy and not browned to my satisfaction, it just doesn’t taste good either. But pumpkin + peach sounds like a great flavor combo — maybe adding banana to that would perk up the blandness! Peaches + banana are good, and banana + pumpkin is good, so why not all 3?

    Congrats Kath & Matt!

I feel guilty asking a question now, but I’m going to anyway. haha.

I love exercising (although I’m kind of new to the whole gym thing) and I have a really cheap membership at my college. But cheap = not so great because their hours kind of stink, and they close on any and all holidays (and for like three weeks for Christmas break). Today I went in and they have a sewage problem so they’re closed D:

I’m not that concerned with switching memberships to another gym because it’s not worth it to me for the next couple of months, but I AM interested in other ways to get some cardio in. I walk a lot but I’m short – 4’10!- and I feel like I need a lot of cardio to lose my last ten or so pounds. I can’t run, because despite getting the fancy shoes, I ALWAYS get shin splints. And I have a bike but I’m really not comfortable riding the city because I’m really inexperienced.

Does anyone else have ideas for cardio? I know magazines and stuff say dancing and cleaning the house, but I mean anything that will really burn a LOT of calories? THANKS!!!

(Re: Bananas – one variety will be going extinct. http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/bananas.asp

    Thank you everyone!!,

    M.E. ,
Other than the usual suggestion to try out a group exercise class you might like (boot camp, pilates, yoga, spinning) I’d say you need some good entertainment: TV or magazines. They make my workouts fly by and I look forward to reading the newest issues. My gym has TV’s too so if yours does maybe you could plan to go during your favorite show??

    Erin ,
    Love all your celebrations!!!

    Ashley ,
The reception was at Duke Gardens on the Duke University Campus.

    Serena ,
It’s been consistent and predictable enough that I’m sure it’s the coffee – I don’t normally ever have shoulder aches except when I drink too much or withdraw (as I’ve found) from coffee. I know 1 cup isn’t that much, but having a dose every.day. for so long was enough for my body to get hooked. Not so much on the quantity but the regularity.

    Lauren ,
I like regular dill, but I also really like Claussen. They’re like restaurant pickles – kind of whiter and more like a cucumber? They come refrigerated so they’re often in a different part of the grocery store. Sometimes near the pimento cheese and chicken salads.

    tvk ,
I LOVE Puffins, but TJ’s was all out. They are better than the Pandas. I don’t buy them often because I can’t keep my hand out of the box.

    BethT ,
Yeah, I took our footage and used Windows Movie Maker to shorten it (it’s over an hour) and edited the music, transitions, etc. to my liking. It was a ton of work!

    chrissy ,
Pachelbel’s Canon in D!! My favorite song in the world. The version was the Canadian Brass’s version. I worked with our quintet on the specific arrangement and timing for my 60 second or so walk. Here’s the version:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOfDuJT7eew

    mel ,
We took 2 Waltz lessons and learned 4 token turns that we could use whenever we wanted. We didn’t want to just stand there and sway. I highly recommend it!

    bluesquash ,
The ceremony was at 5pm 🙂

If bananas go extinct, so will I.

    Jess ,
If switching gyms isn’t an option, I suggest 1) lots of walking. I love walking! It burns more than you think. 2) A public pool where you might be able to get in good swim workouts. 3) Buying an inexpensive bike and helmet and going for bike rides. 4) A jump rope. 5) Or dance around the house extra hard! Hope that helps.

I’ve read “Banana” by Dan Koeppel. His website is www.bananabook.org.

The book is really interesting … all about the scandals the big American fruit companies caused in Latin America over the past century and a half. It is really sad, actually. It also talks about bananas and the possibility that the breed we eat right now, the Cavendish, will soon be extinct. Apparently, scientists are working on a marketable replacement right now. This is not the first time a commonly consumed banana breed has gone extinct, either, as he points out in the book. Our banana, Koeppel says, would seem bland and mushy to our great-grandparents.

It is a really interesting book, though it is a little tedious at times. I recommend it to all banana lovers.
