Wouldn’t Be Summer Without…

July 27, 2011

My lunch finally escaped my camera!

And look who escaped their car to pay us a surprise visit!!! I knew there was a chance they’d stop by the bakery on their way home from their hike trip, but I had totally forgot until I saw my dad step out of the car. What a pleasant surprise! I only wish they could have stayed for dinner.

Afternoon snack was a Kombucha that Matt brought me to the bakery one day when he spontaneously stopped into Whole Foods. What a sweetheart.

Something else I’ve been meaning to share with you all:

KERF reader Lisa makes these gorgeous notepads by hand with adorable foodie designs on the front. Each notebook is hand-stamped with custom-made foodie stamps and the papers are 100% recycled! I absolutely love these and use them at the bakery everyday:

You can purchase them at Lisa’s Esty Store or buy a Heirloom + Local bundle through OpenSky.

After a hard day’s work (Matt took the day off!) I arrived home on my bike to our weekly family slider feast. Wouldn’t be summer without burgers, and we’ve decided to maximize or time with them! Karen and Matt had got a great start on them!

The three of us are really loving sliders for dinner! The little buns from GH are the perfect size for a 2-3 ounce burger.

The meat tonight was a sample from Organic Prairie by Organic Valley. I spoke a bit about this new humane brand in this post. The meat was neatly vacuum packed for easy freezing and thawing – thumbs up for convenience. I could go years without eating chicken or turkey or pork and be fine, but I really do love the taste of beef. I crave it sometimes. I wonder if it has anything to do with the iron or nutrients in red meat?

Our sliders were topped with K+M (hey – Kath + Matt!!), tomato, pickle, basil. It was outstanding!

Apparently this fly thought so too. GET OFF MY DINNER!

On the side: corn + zucchini

And a tomato, cucumber and goat feta salad tossed with balsamic and olive oil

After dinner I cut into this bad boy:

Wouldn’t be summer without it..

Going to catch the first half of SYTYCD.

Wouldn’t be summer without it!

Loving all the summer food! Going now to browse through notebooks :)

2 Cait @ Beyond Bananas July 27, 2011 at 8:21 pm

What an awesome surprise. It is fun when you forget those great things (like a surprise from the rents..and then they just “show up”

And Matt is too sweet for surprising you with Kombucha. That stuff is addicting!

3 Kelsey July 27, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Bye Bye Mr. Fly! I crave pork!! and lamb…. but never ever beef!!

4 Lexi @ A Spoonful of Sunshine July 27, 2011 at 8:23 pm

You’re right–I can’t imagine a summer cookout without burgers, corn on the cob, and watermelon! Such good memories, both had and to come :)

5 cathy July 27, 2011 at 8:27 pm

that’s so nice that your parents popped by – i hope they enjoyed their hiking time! 9and i love your mom’s shoulder bag!)
i have such a weakness for paper products/journals etc – lisa’s are really cute!
watermelon + bbq-ing – totally summer!

6 Molly @ RDexposed July 27, 2011 at 8:35 pm

I’m putting money on this fly being an avid reader and wanting to make a cameo on the blog.

aww that notepad is so simple but such a cute idea!

9 Brenda July 27, 2011 at 8:38 pm

Oh Kath, your dinner looks delish as always! Glad your mom and dad were able to stop by on their way home. I hope they are able to pick the bears up from their exclusive camp when they get home :). I am super excited because Mr. UPS finally brought my package from OpenSky! I am enjoying C’ville Clusters as I type! I recall a post about the labels being rubbed off because of the heat but I didn’t pay to much attention as our weather has been unseasonably cool. Is there somewhere I could look for the directions on how to cook both the oatmeal and pancake mixes?

10 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Yep – the labels are in this post!

11 Erika @ The Teenage Taste July 27, 2011 at 8:41 pm

Nothing more Summer-y than burgers and grilled veggies! Dinner looks delicious! 😀

12 Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles July 27, 2011 at 8:44 pm

Can you believe that I’ve never thought to slice my zucchini that way!?! ….Those notepads are SO cute!

13 Lisa Fine July 27, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Yay! Thanks for showing my notebooks!

Here’s another Etsy link to check out the notebooks:

14 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Thanks for sending them!! Sorry it took me so long :)

15 Lauren July 27, 2011 at 8:52 pm

Just somethin’ about burgs and watermelon that can’t be beat in the summer. With a piled of grilled veggies? I’m coming over for dinner tomorrow :)

16 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) July 27, 2011 at 8:54 pm

I haven’t had watermelon all summer… so weird! I need it!

17 Angel7 July 27, 2011 at 8:56 pm

I love the notepads!

The sliders look great!

18 jenna k July 27, 2011 at 9:03 pm

i keep meaning to try kombucha, but i always forget until i’ve spent my whole grocery budget!
and i completely agree about craving beef. i hadn’t had any in at least a month, and this weekend i just HAD to have a burger two nights in a row!

19 Lisa @ Sunny Seed Stories July 27, 2011 at 9:05 pm

That’s funny–I am not a huge meat eater either (nothing against it, it’s just not my favorite), but I do love a good burger. Must be the nutrients… Yours look delicious as always, btw.

20 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) July 27, 2011 at 9:12 pm

SO glad I got to see your parents as I was flying out the door! It wouldn’t be a B+C visit without breadboard sampling :)

21 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:47 pm

I don’t think B had any sweets!!

22 Eileen July 27, 2011 at 9:12 pm

I think the iron in beef makes people crave it. I was a vegetarian for a year and a half (mostly just an experiment) but when I got pregnant, I craved red meat, and I was sure my body was seeking more iron. I also crave it more when I’m running higher mileage.

23 Jilliam July 27, 2011 at 11:04 pm

The same thing happened to me when I was pregnant. Also after being vegetarian/vegan for 7 years- I never ate much steak before that, but suddenly it was all I wanted to eat for a lonnnng time! I was really bothered by it at the time, but I eventually listened to my body.

24 Baking N Books July 27, 2011 at 9:13 pm

What are the benefits of Kombucha? Is there sugar in it by chance?

Eek – flies! Gross! I would have freaked – but you were able to take a photo?!

25 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:47 pm

It landed AS I was taking the photo – otherwise it would not have been allowed to stay!

26 Baking N Books July 27, 2011 at 10:03 pm

LOL! Well – at least the camera “caught” it before you bit into it! :)

27 Tammy @ Palm Trees and Manatees July 27, 2011 at 9:22 pm

What do you find is the best way to marinate veggies for grilling/the grill pan? Loving all your grilled veggies lately!

28 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:48 pm

I don’t marinate them – just slather in some EVOO and salt/pepa

29 Tammy @ Palm Trees and Manatees July 27, 2011 at 9:55 pm

Thanks! Easy — just how I like it!

30 Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles July 27, 2011 at 9:22 pm

33 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table July 27, 2011 at 9:26 pm

Is that avocado in you yogurt container?! Now that is a combo I have never tried…

34 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:48 pm

That’s my salad in an old yogurt container

35 Margo @ Peanut Butter Trees July 27, 2011 at 9:26 pm

Mmm I need more watermelon in my life!

36 Becki @ Becki's Whole Life July 27, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I am loving all of the fresh produce – isn’t summer the best?? The sliders look great. We crave burgers here too. When my husband and I had a meatless week a few weeks back the one time he almost cracked, he IM’d me and said “I want a hamburger so bad!!!!” Could have cared less about any other meat – he wanted a burger! I wonder if you are right about the iron. Interesting!

37 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen July 27, 2011 at 9:27 pm

What a nice surprise from the parents! I still haven’t bought a watermelon this summer, need to fix that asap!

38 Lauren @ What Lauren Likes July 27, 2011 at 9:30 pm

glad your pics escaped :) they are great!! sigh summer would NOT be summer without watermelon and burgers!

39 kaila @ healthy helper! July 27, 2011 at 9:32 pm

I looove roasted corn on the cob! It looks so crispy and charred….muh fave :)

40 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga July 27, 2011 at 9:34 pm

tomato, pickle, basil = awesome

plus lots! of ketchup for me :)

And the watermelon looks awesome. And komboucha delivered to you by Matt? Oh that’s a fabulous treat!

Those notebooks are so pretty and so cool. She’s a talented lady!

41 Army Amy* July 27, 2011 at 9:34 pm

The grilled zucchini looks super yum! I’ve never had that before. Now I must!*

42 CheezyK July 27, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Mmmmm, those burgers look fantastic. I’ve cooked burgers up a few times lately just to give me that summer feeling in the middle of our cold, wet winter. Didn’t really work last time – I had to do them in the fry pan as it was too cold out to fire up the BBQ! Not the same at all … :(

Love the fact that you stopped to take a pic of the fly instead of swatting it straight off! The things you lovely food bloggers do for our entertainment :)

43 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:49 pm

I didn’t allow him to rest there – he plopped down JUST as I snapped my shutter!

44 CheezyK July 27, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Ah, so awesome timing rather than super dedication – either way, pretty cool.

45 Joyce @ Jranola Joyce July 27, 2011 at 9:41 pm

The cutest things ever!
put them in summer fruit juices or something and makes them prettier and you have a nice treat after you’re done with the drink! :)

46 Bee Goes Bananas July 27, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Those notepads are perfect for jotting down recipes and blog notes!

47 Shari July 27, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Kath I just have to ask…do you have any plans on sharing the cville crunch recipe? I’m dying to try some!!

48 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Nope, never. Sorry!! Otherwise we couldn’t sell it at the bakery!

49 Kristin July 27, 2011 at 9:48 pm

Summer = SYTYCD! I loved Melanie and Sasha’s dance at the end of the show. Melanie is my favorite!

50 KathEats July 27, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I love Melanie too. I have a crush on Jess for some reason as well.

51 Kristi July 28, 2011 at 9:31 am

NEAL coming back was my fav part of the show!!!!!!!!!! I’ve hearted him since his season! I even went to KC for the tour to see him! Sad, I know! :-)

53 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio July 27, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Aren’t burgers the greatest? I just had a bison burger and it was fantastic!!!

54 Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama July 27, 2011 at 9:57 pm

I crave beef only when I’m pregnant so I think you might be right about the nutrients thing. Love the looks of your summery dinner!

55 Mary @ Bites and Bliss July 27, 2011 at 10:18 pm

I love how your burgers always look like everything’s lightly piled on top of each other so it REALLY towers!

56 Allispin July 27, 2011 at 10:29 pm

“I could go years without eating chicken or turkey or pork and be fine, but I really do love the taste of beef. I crave it sometimes.”

I crave it ALL THE TIME. I’ve been eating pseudo-vegetarian for the past… 4 years or so but I have eaten meat here and there. I’m not a big fan of seafood in general and I have NO taste for pork (and barely crave chicken or turkey at all), but lately my boyfriend and I have been buying ground beef from a local co-op. The meat comes for a farm about 5 miles away and is so delicious. Beef is the one meat I still crave.

new to your blog, keep up the good work :)

57 KathEats July 28, 2011 at 6:55 am

58 Shayla @ The Good Life July 27, 2011 at 10:32 pm

That dinner screams summer!! It looks absolutely delicious! And I definitely crave beef over any other meat…I think it definitely comes from needing that iron…and I have to say I especially crave it when its that time of the month!

59 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance July 27, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Awesome that your parents came by as a surprise :)

Haha you caught a fly on your burger?! Be careful! They carry little germies in their feet!

60 Olena (The Fit Gourmet) July 27, 2011 at 10:36 pm

All this time I was wondering what this kombucha stuff was all about and why it’s worth the fuss and a trip to WF. Just goodgled it and OMG – it’s the “mushroom tea” juice!!! We used to have this Asian mushroom living in a gallon of weak tea at our home in Ukraine when I was a little girl. It was very en vogue then, to have this mushroom as a pet. People would pass the offshoots (or whatever they’re called in shroom-land) to their friends, and there was free kombucha in the house 24/7. Imagine. We used to make it ourselves and I never even suspected it would become cool in North America one day. Wonder if there’s a way to buy this mushroom anywhere here?

61 Ella July 27, 2011 at 10:44 pm

this is such an intriguing story! Did the mushroom somehow ferment the tea, like Kombucha?

62 KathEats July 28, 2011 at 6:56 am

It’s all the same with kombucha – it’s called a scobi! I need Faith, Averie or Allie to step in with all the details, but there’s some definite mushroom sharing going on

63 Olena (The Fit Gourmet) July 28, 2011 at 7:33 am

Basically, the mushroom lives in the solution of weak black tea and ferments it into what’s called kombucha here. One every coupla days, you siphon off the kombucha and feed the shroom fresh tea solution. Ours lived in a 3-litre glass jar on a wondow sill.

Thanks for this blast from the past, Kath! 😉

64 Kasey July 27, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Oh my gosh, seriously just laughed out loud in the library when I read GET OFF MY DINNER. haha thanks for making my night, Kath you crack me up!

Yesterday I was reminded how much I love corn…total summer food!!

66 lynn @ the actor's diet July 28, 2011 at 12:21 am

i love little sliders! i’ve had some veggie ones lately that have been stellar.

67 Hannah July 28, 2011 at 12:48 am

What perfect summer food! It’s not as cold and horrible in Canberra today, so I can almost pretend I can eat this way soon :)

68 Khushboo July 28, 2011 at 3:14 am

Kath, have toy tried venison burgers? Theyre so meaty yet low in calories and saturated fat- great alternative to beef!

69 KathEats July 28, 2011 at 6:57 am

I have not – I’ve only had venison a few times – a bite in steak form

70 Aine @ Something to Chew Over July 28, 2011 at 3:40 am

Yum looks deslish!

Love the notepaper – is it available to buy online?

71 KathEats July 28, 2011 at 6:57 am

Yes, I linked to multiple ways to buy it in the post

72 [email protected] July 28, 2011 at 5:00 am

I love the pic with the fly– I really dislike bugs, but bugs happen!:)

73 Holly @ The Runny Egg July 28, 2011 at 5:51 am

I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times, but you look so much like your mother!

74 Casey July 28, 2011 at 6:19 am

Two reasons I could never become a vegetarian. 1. cheeseburgers 2. bacon.

75 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin July 28, 2011 at 7:27 am

I love burgers too, as long as they’re homemade with real ground beef. I can’t stand frozen or fast food burgers!

76 Lauren July 28, 2011 at 8:46 am

I thought about you last night when I was watching SYTYCD…Celine Dion!!! That’s twice this season. I also am crushing on Jess too, not sure what it is about him…probably the fact that he is an amazing dancer!

77 Simply Life July 28, 2011 at 9:11 am

what a great meal!

78 Colleen July 28, 2011 at 9:14 am

Hey Kath! its the b-vites since your a super mighty and sweat so much… I was craving them too last week! Anyhoo I’ve been meaning to write and tell you to fill your jars to get a canning funnel..you probably already figure this out but I thought I’d throw it out there just in case its almost wheat berry time..

79 Cait's Plate July 28, 2011 at 9:41 am

I’m glad that lunch finally escaped the camera because it looks delicious! And, I’m totally with that fly, that whole dinner is pretty much a perfect meal to me. I think I would’ve had a hard time keeping my hands off it as well 😉

80 Zoe July 28, 2011 at 3:32 pm

What does “slider” mean. Is it the burger? Loving your site and posts, here in England.

81 KathEats July 28, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Yeah, they’re like little burgers on buns

82 Namaste Gurl July 29, 2011 at 1:07 am

Yum! I *heart* summer food :) Looks amazing!
