We may be on vacation, but our hosts are not. Larbs + Matt had to run off to work today. I remember from my days of working for the big boss how wonderful it was to have breakfast made [and cleaned up!] on a busy day, so we rose with the worker bees and made them pancakes.
Or really, Matt made his special topping pancakes while I floated around the apartment like a fairy
Of course Larbs is hooked on Kodiak Cakes [so is the rest of my family!]
Matt made two varieties: coconut choco chip and banana flax
Topped with almond butter + peanut butter and a few more bananas
Always coffee
Matt and I are unsure of our plans for the day, but we don’t have anything major. Tomorrow, we’re driving up to Newport! But today is “explore Boston on foot” day. Possibly a run, possibly just lots of tourist walking. We’ll see how we feel!
Happy Friday!!

Enjoy your day! And I bet they loved you cooking for them. Sure looks delicious.
I love Kodiak cakes!!
Sounds like a great day ahead! And a good start too… Kodiak cakes look delicious. Have fun today!
Oh I’d love to be in Boston right now. I visited for the first time this summer. What a beautiful city!

Those look so beautiful! You’re a good sister
I loved walking around Boston when I lived there, even on cold days! Hope you enjoy : )
Have fun! Super cute and interesting bookstore/cafe in your neck of the woods : http://www.tridentbookscafe.com/
As soon as I get my coconut butter in, I’m going to start putting it on everything. Chocolate chip pancakes sound amazing right now, so maybe I’ll just throw a tiny bit on top of those!
you should walk the freedom trail if you haven’t before – it is so beautiful and historic!! it’s a great way to see the city. and then make sure you stop off at Legal Seafoods for some chowdah
Perfect pancakes for friday! Have a good one Kath.
Just curious, but whats with the pancake mix? Isn’t pancake mix just flour, egg, and milk? Why would anyone buy this in a box when it is so easy to make using real ingredients?
Or is there something special about these “kodiak” pancakes.
Easy peasy for busy people
Or really, Matt made his special topping pancakes while I floated around the apartment like a fairy
Love this! That’s totally how I roll too!
Your pancakes always looks so wonderful — perhaps the best in the blogosphere — definitely in the top two.
And now I’m hooked on Kodiak cakes too! Just in case you need another Boston on foot summary:

Kath I know you and Matt have worked to be where you are — but I can’t help but sometimes be a little envious — traveling around, no working for the “big boss” — and I know you do work, but its just different than us 9-5ers, you know?
It really makes me think about what I want to do and change within my own life.
And I feel bad sometimes doing anything fun when I know so many are at work! Sometimes I just want to yell to the skies how freeing it is to be able to work for myself, but I also want to be sensitive to those who don’t or can’t, ya know? My goal in going back to school was to work a flexible lifestyle and build my RD career through writing and a private practice. I’ve been really lucky to be able to shift the practice to a blogging career instead, but I think my goals are still the same.
And that’s just me rambling out some thoughts
Oh please – I don’t want to make you feel bad about being able to do what you want to do! I find it inspiring.
Hahaha, acting fairylike and eating pancakes sounds like an ideal way to start off the day!
I want to try Kodiak cakes–I was perusing Bon Appetit’s website the other day, and they were on it for some of the best pancake mixes!
Come explore Harvard Square! Check out Clover, a new vegetarian spot. Or get a hot chocolate at LA Burdick. Amazing.
DOWN to Newport, silly!
It’s probably even worse that I didn’t even know what state it was in and had to look that up! I don’t know much New England geography being all Southern and all
Aw, so sweet of y’all to make breakfast for the worker bees
Enjoy your day in Boston!!
Sorry your sister has to work today. I am sure the two of you can get into a good amount of trouble on your own though. Have fun!
Yummm! Anything with chocolate and coconut I inhale!
Enjoy your day in Beantown! If you’re looking for any good bars/restaurants with great microbrew selections, I’d recommend Lord Hobo in Cambridge (fun and funky), Cambridge Brewing Company (a must go-to brewery for the beer lover!), Publick House in Brookline (a great spot on a cold, wintery day!), The Other Side (I think you’ve been there!), Lower Depths in Kenmore Square, Bella Luna in JP (Jamaica Plain – where Sam Adams is), or Doyle’s in JP (oldest Irish pub in the city). Have fun and stay warm!
Thanks for the recs! Some of those are on our list already
Awesome! Looking forward to hearing about where you go.
I’m ALWAYS too lazy to make pancakes, so the only way I ever eat them is if they’re made for me…yum!! Have a great day exploring!

When I went to Boston we did the “Freedom Trail”…tons o’ walking!
Happy Friday, Kath! Welcome to Boston.

Ohh those pancakes look perfect. Great way to start an unplanned day
I need to buy me some Kodiak cakes! Also I really really love your photos today, for some reason the pancakes on that square plate against the fun pattern is really beautiful. You know your a foodie nerd blogger when you make comments like that haha…

Hope I bump into you walking around Boston. I have lived here my whole life but never get tired of walking the different areas and neighborhoods. I would love to meet up but Sunday nights aren’t good for going out…Family dinner with teenagers. I really love your blog. I read it every day.
Looks like your having a good time off thus far– especially with the addition of pancakes!

Okay, I have to ask about the green spoon in the banner. I’ve noticed that Caitlin on Healthy Tipping Point as one that looks similar. Where do you get those cute little spoons? Thanks!
Crate + Barrel
You & Matt are such sweet & thoughtful house guests to make breakfasts for them!
That’s so nice that you made them breakfasts! You guys are great guests!
Oh, how nice! Can I invite you to come stay at my place in Australia, if you’ll promise to make me amazing pancakes?
It’s great to see awesome restaurants like Sonsie in smaller cities – and what better place than Charlottesville? So hungry after reading your post…
Sign me up for the banana flax!
Mmmm!
Have fun exploring.
Those pancakes look really good. Reminds me it’s been forever since I made them.
xoxo
Have fun in Newport! I live there, and it’s fabulous. If you are there long enough today, be sure to catch the sunset – and brave the cold – at Brenton Point on Ocean Drive.
Kodiak cakes ROCK!
If you have a BIG LOTS…..they sell them there for $3.
