Every morning I wake up warm in layers of fluff
I look out the window to see if the sun is up (and out!)
Then I tiptoe over to the other windows to check the state of the union
This morning I found pawprints all through the snow!
And then I just gaze at the mountains for a minute or two.
We didn’t move here for the mountains (in fact, I dislike them compared to the ocean or water views) but I have grown to love them. So much that whenever we return to Charlottesville, I find it’s the mountains that remind me most of home. (That and the sweet, sweet air!)
Enough of the pensive thoughts – breakfast is waiting!!!!!!!!
The Mix
- 1/4 cup oat bran
- 1/4 cup oats
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 banana

- 2 tbsp cottage cheese, stirred in at end
- Pumpkin butter
- Sunflower Butter
- Rosie’s Best granola
Coffee!
The house still smells like smoked paprika collided with a burnt log. Coincidentally, I just received a sample of Aussan Natural Room Odor Eliminator from the Home Cleaning Kit available through OpenSky. It’s 100% natural, nontoxic, botanical – and it worked! There’s a nice, light lemony smell, but that has faded to a neutral as well. I spritzed it all around our living room and no longer smell the smoke. Impressive. [More on the company here. More on the kit, which comes with a non-toxic oven cleaner and all-purpose cleaner here.]
We have exciting Christmas related plans for lunch with Karen – 1 week till Christmas!

i’ve never been a big fan of mountains either. it’s not that they’re not gorgeous; it’s just that i like flat plains better. the view goes on forever. that’s what growing up in illinois will to do a girl.
I love mountain views. They are so calming to me. Although the beach rocks too!
I’m definitely more of a mountain person than a sea/beach person.
I love everything about the mountains.
i’ll take beach and mountain views any day!
I can’t believe the Christmas countdown is already on – where is December disappearing to!? I think I prefer the sea /ocean views as well. Particularly this time of year when all I can see outside is snow and slush! Have a great day Kath
I love the peace and quiet of the morning. At home I wake up and look out my window to the sun rising over a field and pond- it’s gorgeous. Definitely my favorite time of day!
I cannot believe Christmas is in one week.
Love the views from your house
I wish I could look out my window to see if the sun is up but 1) I wake up at 5:30 a.m. and 2) the sun doesn’t come out much in the winter around here! Though it is out today
Have a great day!
So beautiful! I love the mountains, but I also love to look at the ocean…probably because we have neither in Michigan!
Have a great day
Jen
I used to live in Asheville, and miss the mountains very much! I envy your view. It’s dark when I get up in the morning… 5:15 a.m…. yuck!

Christmas?! Which also means its only 2 weeks until the NEW YEAR! That is just bonkers!
Cool post – I like the “this is what happens when I wake up” idea! Beautiful view!
I love the ocean, but I am a mountain lover at heart. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the chance to live near them. I just soak it up on vacations! You are lucky to have such a pretty view from your bedroom window!
kath, I like that bowl a lot! Where did you get it from, I am in the search for some new dish ware!
My friend’s Etsy Shop:

I love that yellow mug! And what beautiful views you get to see everyday!
Nothing better than Virginia mountains.
Wow – Charlottesville sounds beautiful!
We live in Pennsylvania, and having grown in in Louisiana and gone to school in Charleston and Indiana, I’d NEVER really been around mountains before we moved here, but now I LOVE them! They’re so pretty in the winter!
Kath,
I am a big fan of your blog. Can’t remember if you have shared this before but, where did you get the black and white patterned chairs in your living room. I have been looking for something like that for ages.
They were custom made for Karen in the 90s
i’m with you…i actually prefer the water ad the sound it makes and the calmness it brings…but the mountains are so stunning and majestic!
awww. I LOVE moutains. It’s interesting how where you grow up influences you. I grew up 25 minutes from Lake Tahoe, at the base of the Sierras, love mountains, they feel like home to me!
And the ocean feels magical, and like vacation!
I love the mountains. I’m off to celebrate my birthday, but wanted to stop by and say have a great Friday! The countdown to Chrismas is officially on!
I can’t believe it’s only a week until Christmas… I need to go shopping!!
your posts are always just to beautiful and fun to look at! i truly look forward to reading your blog each day!
Beautiful morning photos!
Love the pottery bowl in that one shot, too, that’s sort of a indigo/blue/purple swirl…so pretty!
1. I want fluff!!! 2. I looooove mountain views. 3. I’m obsessed with smoked paprika. 4. mama pea has that towel
5. have a great weekend!!
What a beautiful view! That looks like the perfect thing to wake up to!
It totally didn’t hit me that Christmas is so close until you mentioned it! I can’t wait!
I looove those placemats!
Your pics always make me want to check out Charlottesville. I miss the mountains so much!
I love that view! What a way to wake up! Have fun today!
I love the mountains, and your view looks amazing! what a lovely way to wake up.
Your cup is so cute
Love the mountain view. I could sip coffee and look at those all day long!
This post was especially beautiful, Kath. I miss Cville! Both your photos and writing were just what I needed to read on a very tired morning. Have a wonderful day!
i didn’t think that i liked mountains either (in fact, i cried when i was a kid and my dad interviewed for a job at a tiny, tiny airport on a mountain in west virginia in february begging him not to make us move there!), but i couldn’t believe how gorgeous the mountains around charlottesville are! it’s too bad that i like your blog too much to stop reading it cuz it makes me wonder if i made the right decision (technical challenge on day shift in a warmer climate and lower cost of living > supervisory challenge on seconds in a lab and city i preferred).
have fun with your christmas planning!
I looove the mountains! Living in Upstate SC is great… 3ish hours to the beach or go the other direction to the mountains, best of both worlds!
My mom is in love with your mug! I really want to surprise her with one (she loves ginkgo leaves!) any way I could find out where you bought yours? Thanks!!
Stefanie,
They are available in OpenSky, although I haven’t really mentioned it yet because it’s just a soft opening!

I love the mountain views… However I can’t decide what I like more, the bowl or the mug.
Aw, so pretty! Glad you love your home.
I’m a mountain girl and I’ve lived in the Green Mountain state my whole life! They’re so pretty to look at, snowboard on, and hike.
Love your bowl too!
It’s just so wonderful to hear how much Charlottesville feels like home for you already. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
I love the ocean views as well. That’s why I loved going to a college on the ocean.
Although mountains and ocean at the same time? I’m movin’ to Oregon!
