What’s In The Cards?

March 31, 2011

Hey there!

This morning was successful in work:

Chalkboards ordered for the bakery

Sneezeguards picked out

Emails floating around about carrying local/organic foods for our sandwiches ( <—so much harder than you realize!!)

Body Pump

Despite the weather, I actually biked to the gym and back! Who is this girl now not afraid of a little rain!? (BICYCLE RIGHTS! <—that video is SO MATT!)

Body Pump was express today (a shorter class for lunchtime) and I didn’t feel like I got as good of a workout. Who is this girl who is asking for MORE weight lifting!? I think I’m going to go to Saturday’s class to make it 3x this week. That’s a lot for me! More lifting then I have ever done in my life! But I’m still loving it. And my muscles are too!

My purpose in life is not to review the buckwheat bake, but just because I know some of you are wondering, it never really filled me up! I had a slight empty feeling all morning, but not really hunger. That said, I went from 9am when I finished eating to 1:30pm when lunch was ready no problem at all. So it’s still a great breakfast, and I’ll be eating it again!

The one good thing about cloudy days is they make for vibrant food photographs!

I had a leftover slice of pizza (always heated up – cold pizza is gross!!) with an orange

And a big salad with lots of toppings!

  • Mixed greens
  • Carrot
  • Leftover pizza veggies
  • Avocado
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Dried fig
  • Dried cherrries
  • Olive oil, honey, lavender salt

Something is wrong with this picture below. Anyone know what it is!?

I was feeling munchy a little bit later and dug into my Aunt’s magical secret recipe oatmeal cookies and had two small ones for a snack. LOVE those! Looks like Larbs has been enjoying hers too! I’m guessing my mom hasn’t had any left since we left Towson!

Nibble nibble.

Anyone from Fairfax // NOVA who wants to meet up for a casual dinner on Sunday night – give me an email holla! Katheats at gmail dot com.

Bicycle rights!!

Sounds like you had a productive busy morning. Your lunches always look so good! That salad is making my mouth water.

2 Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey March 31, 2011 at 2:35 pm

Mmm…. cookies.
Great, now I want something sweet! :-)

3 megan @ whatmegansmaking March 31, 2011 at 2:35 pm

I used to always eat cold pizza, but now I have to warm it up! I do love leftover pizza – especially when it’s homemade! :)

4 Jessie March 31, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Yea bicycle rights!

5 Hannah @ Healthy Whip March 31, 2011 at 2:38 pm

The lunch looks great, but I have to say I ADORE cold pizza! My dad used to put it in my lunch box as a treat when I was at school- it reminds me of that! :)

6 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) March 31, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Umm there’s no kitty cat in the photo?! Me me me! I’ll email you later.

7 Holly @ The Runny Egg March 31, 2011 at 2:41 pm

The fork should be on the left hand side since you are left-handed? That is a guess but I think it is a good one! :)

I like delivery pizza cold, but homemade pizza needs to be reheated!

8 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 2:44 pm

YOU WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m a lefty :)

9 Abby March 31, 2011 at 8:06 pm

There are two more things we have in common. lol. Cold pizza=ick and I’m a lefty too! 😛

10 Christine March 31, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Aww man!! You beat me to the answer! I totally got it only to scroll down and find out I didn’t win.

11 Sarah R March 31, 2011 at 3:41 pm

I noticed the fork right away too! Darn it!

12 Ellie@fitforthesoul March 31, 2011 at 6:07 pm

crazy!! hahaha I was realllly thinking hard but couldn’t figure it out. all i came up with was, “hmmm perhaps–the fork is sliiiightly crooked?” 😛

13 Tatomme Flanagan March 31, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I just thought the fork was on the wrong side in general!

14 Florentina April 1, 2011 at 2:34 am

I agree. The fork in the left hand, knife in the right hand.

15 Mom March 31, 2011 at 2:43 pm

What are sneeze guards? They sound worriesome.

16 Jack O'Brien March 31, 2011 at 8:00 pm

They’re the glass barriers that are between you and the person preparing your food. They are usually covered in fingerprints from eager sandwich watching folk haha

17 Mom March 31, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Oh and you guessed correctly. My cookies seem to have disappeared.

18 Kristi @ KristiAteIt March 31, 2011 at 2:54 pm

I only like leftover pizza a little bit warmed, or just not cold anymore. It tends to get kind of soggy or really hard if you heat it up too long.

19 Justeen @ Blissful Baking March 31, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Hot pizza is the only way to go!!

20 Rachel @ The Avid Appetite March 31, 2011 at 3:01 pm

Your lunch is so pretty! And I really want one of those cookies…

21 Estela @ Weekly Bite March 31, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I know I say this every time, but your salad pics are always so pretty :)

22 Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) March 31, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Just curious but how to cloudy days help your photographs? I’ve never heard that before!

23 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 3:09 pm

Light bounce off the sky and no direct light

24 Kim @ Spoonful of Sass March 31, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Also a good thing to say to a bride on her cloudy wedding day! That’s when I learned that fun photography fact!

25 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 3:20 pm

My wedding day was cloudy and I did NOT LIKE IT!!!!!!!! :)

26 Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday March 31, 2011 at 3:09 pm

Gorgeous salad Kath!

27 Angel7 March 31, 2011 at 3:10 pm

Cold pizza is not for me!

Your food always looks impeccable! The salad looks oh-so-good!

28 Stacey March 31, 2011 at 3:12 pm

Pizza always has to be reheated. I have eaten cold pizza in my past but a few minutes in the oven/ micrcowave to make the pizza that much better is so worth it.

29 Lea @ Healthy Coconut March 31, 2011 at 3:13 pm

I learned from our wedding photographer about cloudy days being the best days for light and photography. Well, I want great pictures but I don’t want a cloudy day on my wedding…dilemma! I will be getting married during sunset on the beach so maybe sunsets are great for pictures too :)

Body Pump is addicting huh? I’ve never really enjoyed lifting weights until I started taking Body Pump.

30 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 31, 2011 at 3:16 pm

You make me want to eat a salad!

31 Courtney March 31, 2011 at 4:40 pm

Wow, Kath…take that as a huge compliment…I am pretty sure Jessica NEVER says that! :) You two are so great…love reading your blogs everyday!

32 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Haha – SCORE!! It tasted amazing :)

33 B & B March 31, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Lurvin’ the pizza. I have to re-look at the recipe. Is that eggplant on it? I’ve never gotten into eggplant – either too bland, too bitter or too mushy. But I’ve discovered that grilling it is fantastic-o!

Do you have a simple recipe for a salad dressing for 1 person?I typically just douse in vinegear, mustard and salsa!

34 Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 31, 2011 at 3:24 pm

magical secret recipe oatmeal cookies = nice, I’d have a few too

I love the little playing card emblems you used as bullet points. It’s the little things that really excite me :)

35 Molly @ the F-spot March 31, 2011 at 3:27 pm

The key to warming up leftover pizza is to do it in a skillet or pan on the stovetop. The bottom gets crispy again and the top gets melty. Try it next time!

36 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 3:54 pm

That’s exactly what I did!

37 Courtney March 31, 2011 at 4:41 pm

Why have I NEVER thought of this!? *lightbulb*

38 JenATX March 31, 2011 at 5:09 pm

a toaster over works great too because it heats up so fast

39 Deva (Voracious Vorilee) March 31, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I use my toaster oven when reheating pizza – soo good!

40 Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out March 31, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Why have I never done this??!!!! Genius!

41 Laughter-Loving Stacy March 31, 2011 at 3:35 pm

lol I *love* cold pizza! But I made a calzone last night so I will be heating that up for sure! :)

42 Julie @ Lettuce Choose Healthy March 31, 2011 at 3:36 pm

whattt i love cold pizza!

43 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) March 31, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Lunch looks yummy! Love the salad, and leftover pizza is the best.

Overcast here, too, but my pictures did not suffer by the window. A little run through Photoshop and all was well. :)

44 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) March 31, 2011 at 3:39 pm

I do oat bakes for dessert since they don’t do it for me for breakfast. Your eats look delicious…now I want pizza!

45 [email protected] March 31, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Love this post – so funny :)

46 Lauren @ Healthy Delicious March 31, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Your photos are exceptionally pretty today! I never understood eating cold pizza… ick!

47 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat March 31, 2011 at 3:56 pm

I was going to guess the left hand side thing too!! I’m right handed and always put my forks on the right side. I rarely eat with a spoon so I don’t even bother pulling one out of the drawer – except when I’m taking food photos… the knife always looks lonely on its own! Your lunch looks amazing!

48 natalie (the sweets life) March 31, 2011 at 3:57 pm

have you read the new rules of lifting for women? i just started it this week and not only is it super interesting, but it makes me REALLY excited to continue lifting more and more. i used to be a cardio queen and i’ve since changed…but now i want to lift even more seriously! check it out sometime if you haven’t! :)

49 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 3:59 pm

I have the book, but it got lost in my move! I think it’s in the basement somewhere..

50 Amy (Honey, Love and Other Things) March 31, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I just read that book! Cassandra Forsythe, the nutritionist who helped write the book, came to my Sports Nutrition class and really got me thinking about lifting. I just started the program and I attend Cassandra’s Bootcamps on Monday nights. I love feeling stronger!

51 Meg March 31, 2011 at 4:06 pm

I know I’ve said this before but going through your blog is like flipping through pages of a Martha Stewart publication, haha!

I love me some cold pizza, not gonna lie!

52 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table March 31, 2011 at 4:11 pm

So glad to hear of your dislike for cold pizza. My friends think I’m nuts, but I cannot stand the stuff! I’ll barely eat it leftover, but if I do it MUST be re-heated in the oven.

53 Lisa (bakebikeblog) March 31, 2011 at 4:18 pm

wow – you werent kidding! Those photos ARE so vibrant!

54 Arianna March 31, 2011 at 4:19 pm

i live in portland, and i’m loving your portlandia references. ha.

55 Chelsea March 31, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Yay for bicycle rights!! For all the times I’ve gotten in trouble on my bike….from the police :( booo….Williamsburg, VA is so not bicycle friendly! Anywho your salad looks delish, you inspire me everyday to add more and more veggies in my meals :) I’m too much of a fruit eater!

56 Emily @ Savory and Savage March 31, 2011 at 4:40 pm

That orange is so bright it almost looks fluorescent.

The cloudy day does add an extra special glow to the picts.

57 Ashley March 31, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Ooooooooooo that light is perrrrrrrrrrfect :)

58 Lisa March 31, 2011 at 5:09 pm

That’s MY city! 😉 And it’s totally true. #Portlandia

59 Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama March 31, 2011 at 5:34 pm

Wow cloudy days really do make for great pictures. Yours look amazing in this post!

60 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) March 31, 2011 at 5:36 pm

I love cold pizza! It’s the best part about leftovers- eating it straight out of the fridge :)

61 Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope March 31, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Another awesome salad mix Kath! I’m always so impressed by the combinations you come up with.

Thanks for the hunger-filling-rating from the buckwheat bake this morning. I was curious to see how well it held you over!

62 Hannah March 31, 2011 at 5:42 pm

The word “sneezeguards” always make me giggle and feel slightly queasy at the same time.

63 Holly March 31, 2011 at 5:43 pm

I knew the fork was on the wrong side right away! (I read all of Miss Manners’ book from front to back. For fun.) Anyway, the fork always goes on the left, whether you’re a lefty or a righty. Are those even words? The spoon and the knife are together on the left, with the spoon closest to the plate and the shark edge of the knife facing in. They both rest on your napkin. (In case of fine-dining emergencies, now you know :) )

Just found your blog–LOVE IT! I love oatmeal, but have never branched out beyond brown sugar and raisins, so I’m anxious to try some of your concoctions. I find it doesn’t seem to fill me up, but I bet that’s because I’ve never mixed in any source of protein.

64 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 8:34 pm

And doesn’t that mean leftys are smarter because we get to just pick up our fork and start eating! No reaching across or hand exchanges :)

65 Ashley @ Feeding Ashley March 31, 2011 at 5:53 pm

That video was hilarious. Your lunch looks delicious!!

66 Morgan @ moments of mmm March 31, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Looks delicious! I love the “what’s wrong with this picture” game… Never woulda guessed the placement of you fork… too funny!

67 kristinp March 31, 2011 at 6:30 pm

I know this may be a bit random, but my best friend and her husband own a coffee shop/cafe/bar that stocks all local foods and beverages including locally sourced milk etc. She doesn’t live in your neck of the woods, but she may be able to give you some pointers on getting everything lined up. She’s pretty on top of things and they have been super successful for the past 6 years. I can get you in contact with her if you like.

Good luck!

68 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 8:35 pm

Thanks for the offer Kristin. Do they do sandwiches? That’s our big hurdle.

69 Marisa @ Loser for Life March 31, 2011 at 6:38 pm

You’re crazy – cold pizza is GREAT!!! Biking in the rain is NOT! LOL!
Have a good night, Kath!

70 staceyhealthylife March 31, 2011 at 7:12 pm

Lifting weights is soooo good for you. So enjoy all that muscle toning/building.

71 Cindy March 31, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Sounds like you had a busy morning!

72 Melissa March 31, 2011 at 7:54 pm

No one gives me food envy like you do, Kath! 😀

73 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey March 31, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Yum to that lunch!! I had a huge salad with my dinner – love those greeens!!

74 Kathleen @ KatsHealthCorner March 31, 2011 at 8:29 pm

How did the Nutritional Yeast taste on your salad. I’ve heard it has a cheesey type of flavor. :)

75 KathEats March 31, 2011 at 8:33 pm

Nice and a bit cheesy :)

76 Courtney Leigh March 31, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Thought of you during lunch today. I had a triple nut butter burger from one of our super awesome food trucks. A local beef patty on artisan bread, topped with peanut, almond, pistashio nut butter and cocoa dusted bacon. It sounds insane (and maybe a little gross) but it was SOOOO good. I believe I shall be recreating it at home. Soon.

77 Jessica March 31, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Awww I’m from Nova, and I’d TOTALLY be down to meet up.
Too bad I am in law school in West Virginia :(

78 tiffany April 1, 2011 at 4:44 am

are you going to share the recipe to those amazing looking cookies?

79 KathEats April 1, 2011 at 8:05 am

Nope! Even I don’t know it – it’s a secret recipe.

80 Allison @ Happy Tales April 1, 2011 at 7:57 am

Aw, good luck with getting local food! I wish it weren’t so hard :/

81 Lauren April 1, 2011 at 8:07 am

Hi Kath! I am a 15 year old girl who lives in Arlington, VA. You probably don’t want to have dinner with a 15 year old and her family but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to mention it :) -Lauren

82 Annie April 1, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Have you contacted the local food hub? they sell local produce from the cville area. a source for organic non local is cavalier.

83 KathEats April 1, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Yep – that’s who I called
