What’s Cold And Green..

April 20, 2010

And eaten with a spoon?

That extra hour allowed me to read in bed last night for 30 minutes! It was fun times. I was asleep by 9:26 and my alarm went off at 5:46 – nearly 8.5 hours. Not quite 9, but I’ll take it

I showered and came down to make a big green SIAB.

The Mix

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 small frozen banana
  • 2 GIANT handfuls spinach
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 packet Green SuperFood
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder

Now I’m COLD!

I added the Superfood powder because why not?

IMG_0827 (640x427)

But here’s where the real magic lies:

IMG_0828 (640x427)

Yum! I got addicted to cocoa in green smoothies from the Chocolate Amazing Meal. A little cocoa isn’t quite the same, but it’s still good!

IMG_0831 (640x427)

Topped with Nature’s Path, coconut butter and Nuttzo PF

IMG_0843 (640x427)

A discount is coming on the Nuttzo PF  next week!

IMG_0834 (640x427)

IMG_0841 (640x427)

Today’s beverage was a ChocoMint Tiger Wing tea from Golden Moon.

IMG_0825 (640x427)

I liked the chocolate after taste, but wish it had been [a lot] mintier.

IMG_0845 (640x427)

Freezing cold! Our heat is off and summer has reverted back to spring. Brrrr!

Ah gosh, don’t even get me started on SIAB! The BEST way to start the day :D I’ve literally had about 10 in the past 2 weeks :P I add a tbsp of cocoa powder in mine – I think it gives it much more depth of flavour, it’s delicious :D
Have a good day!

I’ve never tried SIAB! Must be nice to slow down and eat it with a spoon rather than drink it because it lasts longer! Plus, you can add toppings that way. Delicious!

I hate it when the weather fools you into thinking it’s going to be warm… then the temperatures drop again. It’s so annoying to have to check the weather everyday! Oh well, I guess that’s spring for ya… Looks like the skies just love being bipolar ;)

What would happen if you didn’t add any ilquid to SIAB? Would you get an extremely THICK smoothie or something like the banana soft serve people have been talking about?

Loving your blog as always! :D

I just can’t get into SIAB — but hey, different strokes for different folks. ;) I love smoothies/GM’s as a snack but my brain doesn’t accept they are “enough” for a meal (even though I know they are haha)

Yeah, Tuesday…one day down…4 more to go! I need to get on the smoothie thing, but have not been to the store yet. Question, will the spinach mix in well with a blender or is the vita-mix the only way to go with it? Have a great day, Kath!

15 Amy @ The adventures of a ginger grad student April 20, 2010 at 8:30 am

Hey Sarena,

I make smoothies in my magic bullet blender or a regular blender all the time with spinach. It usually blends in really well, but I recommend pre-blending the spinach first with the liquid, then adding the rest, I do that all the time in my big blender and it prevents chunks. I also do that if I want to add oatmeal or cottage cheese, and it works as well.

16 Pat Kilmain April 20, 2010 at 10:43 am

I do just the opposite – add the spinach last, and it works fine! I just have a regular blender.

Reply

17 Kath April 20, 2010 at 11:16 am

I had no problem with spinach in my Cuisinart blender, but I couldn’t get kale smooth. The Vita-mix can handle kale no problem and does blend things even smoother than ever.

Thanks! I will definitely give it a try! I have been craving spinach lately and with the warmer weather, smoothies are looking very appealing! I will give it a go!

Ugh, I know, we had to put the winter comforter back on the bed because the temps got so chilly again (in western North Carolina)! No fun! That prompted me to have oatmeal for breakfast – no cold smoothies for me!

LOVE cocoa in smoothies! i just came up with a chocolate covered strawberry green monster and a chocolate peanut butter green monster, and they both have regular cocoa powder in them. YUM!

Hi Kath! First time responding and I’m pretty excited about it! My name is Katie and your breakfast looks delicious. I read your bio and I just wanted to let you know I’m an RD and am curious how you are enjoying your experience of becoming one! I just graduated in August with my Masters and took my RD exam in November after I got married in September. Your story is very inspiring and I bet you’re excited to almost be done with your 2.5 journey to becoming an RD! Congrats in advance and I’ll talk to you later :)

I was disappointed that I didn’t find a picture of the fungus in the back of the 3rd floor dorm freezer when I read the title for your post… (Just kidding :P )

The SIAB looks great as usual! I know what you mean about the cold though, I can’t stand it or else I’d have one before my workouts because of how easy they are to eat :)

STASH tea makes a GREAT chocolate mint flavor – both chocolate and mint come out really well in it.

That SIAB looks amazing as always – I’ll never get over my love for those bowls!! They’re almost as beautiful as what’s inside :)

Your post reminded me that it’s been far too long since I had a bright green monster. In a bowl, no less. Love your selection of toppings! It all looks like a delicious, nutritious breakfast soup. :)

I added cocoa to a SIAB last week and had to throw it out. It was that exact cocoa powder actually. Maybe it’s better if there’s a banana in there to sweeten it up.
