Weekend Visitors

January 21, 2014

We had some special visitors this weekend! Everyone loves it when Grammie Buzz and Pea visit!

We had the perfect balance of time spent with my parents and free babysitting. My parents like to hang with Mazen alone, so it was a win win!

After they arrived on Saturday, we walked downtown on a chilly afternoon to the Discovery Museum.

Mazen looks very warm and relaxed, don’tchathink?

He had a great time playing.

Saturday night after bedtime Matt and I snuck out for a fabulous date night. It was quite cold!!

But that didn’t stop us from having giant ice cubes at Commonwealth!

The above was actually not a Manhattan – it was a drink called The Jake made from a fortified wine that was supposed to mimic a Manhattan without the strength of bourbon. I loved it!

We sat down to dinner in one of the few booths at Commonwealth with two other friends – celebrating the husbands’ birthdays.

We all shared two rounds of empanadas to start – vegetarian and beef. I though the veg one ruled.

For dinner I had Cornmeal Crusted Sea Bass with black beans and tomatillo sauce. It tasted good, but it was missing a third side – some potatoes or polenta or something.

We also had an amazing marshmallow dessert, but I was too engrossed in conversation to snap a picture.

We headed upstairs to Sky Bar after and met more friends for a fun time. Despite being in a tent with heaters, it was freezing!

Sunday morning we headed out to brunch at The Nook

Somebody loved his broccoli and cheese omelet!

Foodblog-3834.jpg Foodblog-3836.jpg

I had a Belgian waffle and shared Mazen’s omelet for a little protein

Sunday afternoon Matt and I went to see The Hobbit!! The second movie was even better than the first. And 3 hours went by really fast…

We fit in our Sunday meal plan prep during naptime and also made dinner – another Cook Smarts Chicken Pot Pie! This recipe is so easy, even with Matt’s homemade crust on top.

Mom and dad loved it alongside a simple salad

Monday morning we said goodbye over cinnamon chip French toast and a final run outside for me. Our 60* coat-free weather is taking a turn for the worse today – snow expected!!

Hi kath! I loved yesterday’s post and today’s post! Such inspiring ideas and meal plans! Question…would you consider doing a post on grocery budgeting considering the cost of organic foods. Maybe share some ideas on how you guys cut cost? Also maybe another day in the life of post? I just love those :) thanks for listening!

4 KathEats January 21, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Sure, on my radar :)

Sounds like a great time with family!!
Mazen always looks so happy when he is around his grandparents!
Your adult time looks super fun, and your drink would be one I would so love to try!

My friends and I were talking about chicken pot pie just yesterday – I honestly think I’ve only had it twice in my life! So delicious but just not something I think to make

Everything looks great, but somehow the simple French Toast picture (the last) appeals to me the most! It’s snowing in NYC right now and it’s stunning- I’m loving this! And next week I head back to Harvard for my last semester (oy vey).

Fun weekend! I am a sucker for a good Belgian waffle, especially with real maple syrup. Boo for temps getting colder again. It’s 61 and sunny here today with temps dropping tonight. Darn #chs.

That pot pie looks delicious!! There is a chance of snow in NC tonight and fingers crossed we at least get some!

12 Ella P January 21, 2014 at 11:14 am

This sounds like the perfect weekend for me – family, friends, food & fun :)
Kath, the casserole looks lovely. What is coated with? a pastry-sort-of?

13 KathEats January 21, 2014 at 11:39 am

Looks like so much fun! The chicken pot pie really does look fantastic— the crust especially! I hope you have a wonderful week. It’s snowing here in NY also. Stay safe and warm!

Looks like a fun weekend! I’m glad to hear you liked the second Hobbit movie! I really want to see it, but my boyfriend said the reviews weren’t great. He loved the first one so maybe with your recommendation I can get him to the theater!

22 Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit January 21, 2014 at 2:11 pm

For some reason, The Jake, reminds me of the drink Ryan Gosling makes in Crazy, Stupid, Love! All of the food here looks so good – the pot pie especially!

23 Joyce @ MustardSeeds+Hope January 21, 2014 at 2:24 pm

The pot pie looks great!

24 Julie January 21, 2014 at 2:34 pm

We’re headed to Charlottesville soon, and those restaurants look awesome! I’m going w/ my SIL and she loves brunch, so the nook might be happening :)

25 KathEats January 21, 2014 at 4:17 pm

I love Commonwealth’s brunch too! A bit fancier.

26 Shel@PeachyPalate January 21, 2014 at 3:02 pm

That waffle looks mighty – as does the omelet!!! I’m on such an omelet kick this week!

27 Christie Ellis {Pepper Lynn} January 21, 2014 at 4:12 pm

Love the pic of you and your mom. You both look stunning!

Also, I’m totally drooling over that pot pie — it looks so good!

30 Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties January 21, 2014 at 4:59 pm

OOH that waffle looks so good!

31 Ana January 21, 2014 at 7:52 pm

Your waffle is naked! Did it come with fruit or anything? Here they are usually served with fruit and whipped cream or a warm fruit compote and syrup.

32 KathEats January 21, 2014 at 8:16 pm

I added butter + syrup : ) Fruit would have been nice!

33 Livi January 21, 2014 at 8:24 pm

those few days of nice weather were such a treat! I’m not ready for the cold again!

34 seana January 22, 2014 at 6:42 am

I love love love Mazen’s sweater!0

35 Lindsay January 22, 2014 at 12:55 pm

My internet pooped out so I don’t know if this will comment twice, but I loved all the snapshots of family time. I am trying to do better about having my camera on hand!

36 ClevelandJoe @ The Frolicking Fells January 24, 2014 at 12:41 am

I thought The Desolation of Smaug was better than An Unexpected Journey too! We have seen Desolation twice and we will probably go again at least one more time before it’s out of theaters.

37 Julia January 25, 2014 at 7:49 am

What a fun weekend! DH and I are having our own date night tonight (party at a friends house) while the wild child has a sleepover at Nanny’s house. They plan to build a tent for him to sleep in. Aren’t grandparents great? Glad you got to connect with family and still had some couple time! All the food looks great.
