We had a lovely weekend with both wonderful and not-so-wonderful weather. We spent time with friends, on the porch, tasting bourbon, cooking with wine, eating pizza and delicious desserts.
Playdate.
Friday night pizzas, kale salad and Italian Cream cake from Paradox that Karen brought over!
Bourbon tasting…Maker’s Mark won : )
Saturday morning walking
Chicken, sweet potato, spinach and olives for Saturday lunch
I’m working on recipes made with The Naked Grape wines – these two were fab!
Afternoon cooking = free dinner!
Sarah brought over cupcakes for dessert in exchange for an open bottle of wine we could not drink (since we had 2 open ones for the recipes!) We ate these after the baby went to bed while watching Portlandia. Love that show!
On Sunday I escaped to the country with Hillary to see Into The Woods, a musical starring my friend Alice! We snacked on trial mix, AnneP bars and popcorn.
Came home to happy boys playin’!
Sunday night we were too tired to cook, but luckily we had a fridge PACKED with leftovers to choose from! I had more fish, rice and a few bites of leftover pizza.
We went from 70* to a chance of snow, so I’m hoping this week brings some spring weather – after all, today is the first day of spring!
AND my mom’s birthday! Happy B-day Buzz!

Happy bday to your momma!!!!
Thanks and happy first day of spring to everybody!
We’ve had crazy mixed up weather here too– sun and 70′s some days, then a call for snow this Friday! Sigh. Summer has to come eventually!!
That grilled radicchio looks fabulous!
Could you please tell me what that delicious-looking fish recipe is? Thanks!
Cod in a Chardonnay curry sauce. Recipe coming in a month or so (sorry I have to wait)
Oh, good, my question was going to be, please tell me we’re going to get the recipes for those yummy and interesting looking dishes??? Haha. It’ll be worth the wait
What a lovely weekend! Cannot wait for that fish recipe!
LOVE Naked Grape wine!
Still trying to figure out what that cabbage-y looking red thing is? Cabbage? Is it cabbage? It’s got to be cabbage.
Radicchio!
No signs of spring over here yet
I love new fish recipes! can’t wait
The playdate picture is absolutely cute! I wish the weather changes until the next weekend here in Germany… I can’t see the snow anymore.
Have a nice day!
Jola
what’s the strap across Mazen in the stroller shot?
I have a BOB, but it doesn’t buckle like that.
afraid I am missing something.
It’s our car seat security strap and I have a post about how fun it is as a toy holder!
What do you put in your kale salad? It looks delish!
Olive oil, lime juice and salt – plus avocado!
I just left NYC early this week and it did not feel like spring at all. Now in Tampa, it’s looking rainy today but I know the heat is just around the corner
Nothing cuter than a bunch of babies in a room!
Cupcakes for a bottle of wine? I’m not sure which side of that exchange I’d rather be on?!
Your pizzas always look so good! That looks like a great weekend, and I loooove going to see plays!
That grilled radicchio looks amazing. I’m curious how you incorporated the wine though! Maze looks adorable as always. Thanks for sharing
Everything looks so wonderful! Maze sure is getting big!
Beautiful food photos! Also, love the picture of Mazen out for the walk. SO cute!
Makers will ALWAYS beat buffalo trace. and any of the other KY bourbons. I went to 6 distilleries and buffalo trace (separate trip) this fall running the Bourbon Chase relay, and Makers is definitely the big winner! Woodford Reserve is a close second (and they win for having a prettier distillery!)
I actually thought they were pretty similar but did prefer Maker’s a little more. It had just that extra bit of richness over the lighter BT
If I may, I’d like to suggest Bulleit be entered in the next tasting of the bourbon. Delish!
I just had it recently – loved!
Oooo…especially pretty photos of food, family and friends! And, I don’t want to hear any complaining from you, my weather-spoiled friend, as the wind chill here in Chicago has brought our temps down to the single digits! But, the upside is that the sun is shining brightly and the weekend forecast is for a balmy 40 degrees!
And finally, I wish Mama KERF the happiest of b-days!
Thanks!
yum cupcakes…just wondering what kind of camera do you use? Im looking to buy a new one and your pics are fab!
Thanks! I have the Canon Mark II – more info in this post.
That Italian Cream Cake looks to die for! I’ve never tasted Italian Cream Cake before, but I recently saw one in a bakery and thought it looked like my kind of dessert
I’m definitely on a mission to try one now!
Per usual, your weekend looks like a lovely mix of fun times, great company, and excellent eats
Catoctin Creek Distillery is a place you should check out! It is so much fun to hand-bottle & label the organic liquor products ( & taste of course)!
Kath, do you know what happened to the Method baby dryer sheets that smell like marshmallow!? I’m not finding them online or in stores anymore! Miss them!
They were discontinued because of questionable ingredients!! Another reader shared this with me. I’m soooo sad!
Still mourning…
Oh dear, can you share a link? I have a half-used packet in my laundry room right now!
I don’t know if there was one – it might have been a rumor. I continued to use mine though. I don’t think they turned out harmful – just not as eco as Method’s standards
What is on the pizza, it looks amazing!
Pesto cheese from Trader Joe’s!
Happy birthday to your mom!
Thanks!
Your food all looks so epic! Whats in that salad? Looks like it was truly a perfect little family & friend weekend!

The pizza and kale salad look awesome! Are those your recipes? If so, what are they called – I’d love to make them!
They are more concepts than recipes – although you can find Matt’s crust here.
The kale salad was just raw kale massaged with olive oil, lime juice, salt and avocado/tomato
Every time I travel and talk to people about Portlandia they always assume it’s an exaggeration to make a point. The funniest part for those of us who live here is that the show is, if anything, an understatement of just how bizarre, silly (and sometimes obnoxious) it can be here.
Seriously!!! Every time I watch Portlandia I just shake my head because living in Portland really is like the show.
Had some great porch weather in NC too. Loved it! Is the pollen as bad there as it is here?? I left my keys on the porch while chatting with a friend for a couple hours and when I left they were already lightly coated in pollen! I would be tempted to take your cushions and new rug inside until the worst is over! What did you do last year?
Not yet, but I have to hose them off in April
Hey Kath! I notice you have mentioned a few alcoholic beverages you’ve had, but you’re also breastfeeding. What are your thoughts on that? I’ve been told beer can actually help increase your milk supply, but more often than not people say to avoid alcohol entirely when breastfeeding. I’m sure you researched before having Mazen, and wondered how you decided drinking some was ok. (Ps – This is a totally non-judgmental question. I’m honestly just interested in knowing. Just wanted to make sure you knew I wasn’t wagging a finger at you!)
I just keep it to one drink or so and plan around nursing
Is there a trick to eating raw kale? Your salad looks amazing, but if I don’t steam or sauté it, then it’s a little rough on my stomach.
Massaging it breaks it down some but it’s still a bit tougher than sauteed
What’s that laptop type baby toy you have there?
It’s by vtech
Mazen looks so cute surrounded by pillows! Is he still toppling over when sitting? Anderson never fell over quickly it was like a slooow lean and fall, he’s taken plenty of falls since learning to pull up and cruise though!
He can fall pretty fast if we’re looking the other way
Ohhh I love Naked Grape wine!!!
I can’t wait to see what those recipes are!
Pizza looks devine…cakes and cupcakes look tempting…spring flowers look heavenly!
With another potential snow squall for today…I am desparate for spring to start!
The weather is such a tease this time of year. Here in Atlanta, we had temps in the high 70s last weekend and now they’re saying a possibly wintry mix is coming. Argh.
Happy Birthday to your mom!
Thanks!
oh my word, girl! all your posts look delish but this one certainly does!

A bourbon tasting! I never thought I was into the stuff but I had some with apple pie the other week and now I’m hooked! I like this idea – good to know Makers Mark takes the cake in this round
Maker’s Mark has always been my favorite whiskey. It wins every time in my book. Also love Portlandia and Into the Woods! My all time favorite musical. Sounds like a fun weekend!
Saturday’s lunch was 4 of my favourite foods…never thought to eat them altogether though!
You should give New Hollands Beer Barrel Bourbon a try, it’s amazing.
Also Few Spirits has a great bourbon as well!
That Italian Cream cake looks amazing!! Also, the kale salad looks so fresh. I hope you had a great weekend.
Nothing like left over pizza to round a stunning weekend off.
