Laura - I live in London too. There are a few health shops around which are quite good but I know what you mean, its different stuff that you're getting. There must be equivalents! I love whole foods but its soooo expensive.

Laura- I live in Birmingham and I know exactly what you mean. The food is very different and the alcohol is outrageous! The portions of alcohol are so much. I am getting to know and appreciate the British healthy foods though.. I think there are a lot of options out there as long as you are willing to look as well as cook your own things. I am annoyed though that I cannot get Kashi products here.. I really hope they come to the UK soon.

Re. Smoothies and feeling full...so funny I cannot eat a "real" breakfast in the AM or else I am STARVED all day, so I have to "eat" a smoothie and that fills me up. However, I use protein powder, xanthan and guar gums (fiber fiber), frozen fruit, and ICE ICE ICE (sometimes a tablespoon of a nut butter)- you almost "chew" the ice. It's been my salvation really- holds me well until lunch. All for about 250 cals! I had a girlfriend who also liked to "chew" all of her food until she tried voluminous smoothies, now she's completely hooked.

Re. London- that Whole foods is AMAZING yet pricy. You also have those "health food stores" on every high street that sell all the nuts, etc. Yes, the drinking is tough there, wine, yes (an not good stuff usually, not worth the cals...and beer/lager is sooo high in calories too) We visit my hubby's family there. :-)

Are there any other girls who read this that live in London? I am from California but have lived in London for 2 and a half years. The food in the UK is so different -they call oatmeal porridge- but just wanted to say reading this blog every day is great not only for health but it makes me feel connected to home. I love reading all the crazy discussions, and it is scary but I am starting to recognize some of the names that pop up on a regular basis - KellyT, Kiala, etc. Anyway, back to the point - the food product ranges in London are so limited. A Whole Foods opened up on Kensington High Street last year, but they don't even carry Kashi cereal or products you girls are always talking about. So it is interesting because I read the blog and think of alternatives here that I can eat every day. I usually have Kelloggs All Bran in the morning, with Fage 0% or cottage cheese and some fruit. The All Bran over here actually seems to have a better nutritional profile than Nature's Path cereal and lots of the others. But the real challenge here is the alcohol. I think living in London people tend to drink waayyy more. In the pubs, if you order a glass of wine, they automatically give you a large size, which is 250 mls! That is 1/3 of a bottle, in one glass. And the measure is imprinted on the side of the wine glass - I swear it is because the English do not want to be shortchanged with how much they are served.

Kath,

I am not sure that nasty tone your was warranted. I can assure you that your weight is not important to me. I do, however, think if you choose to tell us readers, you should be precise given that you are meticulous in other areas of your life. As I said in my previous post, if you want to keep it private it is your right.

Katie ,
I've seen those somewhere! I need to get one, but I don't really need a shaker. So far my to-go bottle with a straw is working OK. Do they make big smoothie straws for sale anywhere!?

hjk ,
The nutshell says I am maintaining "around 120," which I feel gives me "permission" to go to 117-118 or 122-123 without having to report my weight to the world. The reason I have my weight up there in the first place is I would probably get lots of frequent questions of people wanting to know how much I weighed before and after weight loss (like i used to get tons of questions about my height before I put that in as well.) If it means that much to you, I will try to remember to weigh myself this week and report whether or not I am still maintaining that range.

coco ,
It's easy once you get on a schedule. And yes, I think it's healthy. You've got to do what makes the most sense for your own lifestyle.

SarahH ,
I responded to a query asking for weight loss before and after stories. I was thoroughly surprised when they called to say they wanted me to come to NYC for a cover shoot, as I thought if I got in the magazine it would just be a blurb.

Grace ,
I put 1 tablespoon. 2 tbsp of PB makes the whole sandwich close to 450 calories, which leaves little room for sides. If I needed a more filling lunch, I'd definitely use more, but I'd rather have yogurt and fruit and stuff with it instead of just the sandwich and maybe 1 side.

Michelle ,
I just estimate the best I can with those websites Daisy listed.

Lauren ,
I wouldn't trade my liberal arts education for the world, but I often wish I had taken some of these general science classes then. It would have been nice to do this in 1 year instead of 2. But I really like being a student again (which took almost 3 years out of school to get the desire back.)

Lauren-

I can't speak for Kath, but I do have some regrets. I went through college and grad school (masters in school counseling) before I discovered my passions for food and healthy living. I looked into going back to school, but in the end, it was just way too expensive and time consuming. I applaud Kath for taking the risk and jumping into a new career. As for myself, I'm just gonna stick to reading and updating my own blog and focus on getting a job in my trained career field.

Coco-
During the school year (pre-school teacher) I too go to bed around 9pm and wake up around 5:30am. I love the feeling of getting a workout in so early in the morning. Now that its summer and I have a bit more flexibility in my day, my schedule shifts a little later on both ends :)

Legume Lab! Yum. Sounds a little healthier than some of your previous labs.

I think the addition of flaxseed makes smoothies much more filling. So does a little cinnamon, strangely enough. So does a big spoonful of nut butter. And I'm guessing oatmeal really does the trick...

Kath,

Do you ever wish that you did nutrition from the beginning? Meaning did not have to go back to school at your age? I think it's wonderful that you are pursuing your dream but I was just curious if you had regrets?

HI Laurel,

I have run two half marathons and am training for a third. If your exercise has been sporadic (especially running) I would strongly suggest starting with a half - it's just as rewarding and a great entry into distance racing. I would also say that it's easier to train alone for a half - who wants to run 20 - 25 miles alone? :(

You can find lots of great training programs online - I'm partial to those by Hal Higdon (just google his name and you'll find them). Good luck - racing is fun and addictive, just train smart to avoid injury.
