Vegetables, Animals, Miracles

September 11, 2010

There were lots of the above at the market today!

This lion was out to get us

IMG_0628 (640x480)

He’s trying to paw the camera!

Bad kitty kitty

The wind in my face on a crisp morning was a miracle.

And the veggies were fun, as always

IMG_0636 (640x480) IMG_0637 (640x480)

My shirt got attention 😉

IMG_0639 (480x640)

I’ve started making an actual grocery list for the market and keeping a tally of what we spend. It helps a lot!

[By the way, we always spell spinach as "spinage" in this house because that’s how we pronounced it!]

IMG_0641 (640x480)

We were flexible and came home with no mushrooms and chicken instead of "sausage or beef."

Once we were home and relaxed a bit, we went back out for a bike ride. We took Andrew down to Karen’s new neighborhood – which involved plenty of hills!

IMG_0646 (480x640)

Then, around 12:30, we feasted

IMG_3111 (640x427)

I had a hodge podge salad of:

  • Spinach
  • Leftover pesto pasta
  • Tomato
  • Cantaloupe
  • Olive oil, sea salt
  • And honey

IMG_3109 (640x427) (2)

With a side of Tomato Herb from GH – honey was a great addition!

IMG_3108 (640x427)

IMG_3104 (640x427) (2)

We taught Andrew to eat kiwi skin.

IMG_3113 (640x427) (2)  IMG_3114 (640x427) (2)

He proclaimed it his newest favorite fruit

IMG_3115 (640x427)

I made a strategic list of the beers I really want to try so I don’t waste my …energy… on styles I don’t care for. There are 150 craft brews and I get 30 2-ounce tastes. That’s 5 beer’s worth – way too much for me! I’m going to sip instead of drink and I’m not afraid to pour out everything but the pumpkin beers! Lastly, I’m hoping to blog hard. Stopping to photograph and think about each beer will help me slow down and focus. I do not need another 2-day hangover!

Top Of The Hops, here we come!

I started eating kiwi skins after reading your blog :) I’ve never looked back 😛
Nice top!

2 Ginna September 11, 2010 at 12:49 pm

LOVE that shirt! I might just have to get one! I think you are the only other person I know besides myself who hates onions. LOL!

3 jamie @ jamelafamela September 11, 2010 at 12:51 pm

that’s an interesting lunch…haha sometimes those are the best kind tho!

4 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) September 11, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Looks like a great Saturday so far. My husband would kill to be able to enjoy a beer fest! Oh well, maybe in another life (he has celiac). Have fun!

5 Ella @ The Princess and the P September 11, 2010 at 12:58 pm

Kath, that tshirt! I have to know where you found it! So perfect!! Down with onions!

6 Erika @ Food, Fitness, & Fun September 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Love the Flipping Out shirt! I love the show! :-)

7 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is September 11, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I love that shirt!

8 Kristy @ September 11, 2010 at 1:03 pm

I have never tried a kiwi with its skin! I assumed it was too thick/tough…but apparently not. :) That kitty is so cute! I want one…but I think my dog would have a differing opinion of that. 😉

9 Laura @ Blogging Over Thyme September 11, 2010 at 1:09 pm

Fun day! I love that onions shirt, that’s hilarious. Where is that from? I definitely have kiwi with the skin now–but that’s probably more out of laziness than taste preference :)

10 Jean@RoastedRootsandPumpkinSpice September 11, 2010 at 1:12 pm

I love the skin of the kiwi. My friends think I’m nuts for eating it though. It’s the best part!

11 hippierunner September 11, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Awesome shirt! Jeff Lewis is hilarious.

12 Katie September 11, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Cute shirt!!

You are so lucky to have so many options at your farmers market. I can’t go with a list, because I never know what will be there, but I do have my garden, with tons of stuff too.

13 holly @ couchpotatoathlete September 11, 2010 at 1:17 pm

Enjoy the beerfest!

I *love* Jeff Lewis — where is that shirt from? Bravo website?

14 val September 11, 2010 at 1:49 pm

yes, i would love to know where you got that shirt!! i love onions, but i might love jeff lewis more!

15 Lauren at KeepItSweet September 11, 2010 at 1:18 pm

i was a little afraid the first time i ate kiwi skin but now i like it and it makes eating kiwi SO much easier

16 Estela @ Weekly Bite September 11, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Love the shirt!

17 Courtney September 11, 2010 at 1:24 pm

The kitty is adorable!!!

18 Angela (ohsheglows) September 11, 2010 at 1:31 pm

‘blog hard’ that made me giggle.
Mmm pumpkin beer…enjoy. :)

19 Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks September 11, 2010 at 1:39 pm

That shirt, is in fact, full of awesome.

Still not sure I can jump on the kiwi skin bandwagon though. My friend keeps telling me it’s the only way to be, but every time I consider trying it, I get the willies and peel them instead!

20 lynn (The Actors Diet) September 11, 2010 at 1:44 pm

i love onions personally but that is a GREAT shirt for you!

21 Valerie @ City|Life|Eats September 11, 2010 at 1:54 pm

I never ate the kiwi skin until my husband pointed out it is good – have never looked back since :) Love the photos of the market :)

22 christina cadden September 11, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Looks like you had a fun morning! I have never eaten the skin on kiwi. I was not sure if you could.

23 Joanna @ September 11, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Animals and vegetables are 2 of my fav things so I love this post. Cute kitty. Fantastical veggies. And now I’m going to go Google Jeff Lewis cause I have no idea what that shirt means! lol

24 Rebekah September 11, 2010 at 2:00 pm

De-lurking to ask…WHERE did you get that shirt? I NEED one, as I also cannot stand onions! It looks like it was a beautiful day for the farmer’s market!

25 Amber K September 11, 2010 at 2:10 pm

LOLing at the onion shirt (I LOVE onions!!) and at the “spinage.” My husband and I are always calling things different names or using different pronunciations.

26 Simply Life September 11, 2010 at 2:17 pm

ooh I just bought kiwis – I should really give the skins a try!

27 Amy September 11, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Have you had Longtrail Blackbeary (yes, that’s how it’s spelled) Wheat? You should give it a whirl.

28 Stacey September 11, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Have fun! I’ve never eaten the skin of the kiwi…the thought of it kind of freaks me out. I hear it’s pretty common for people to do that though! I guess I need to open my mind a bit more to the idea 😀

29 Kori September 11, 2010 at 2:34 pm

The kitty is absolutely adorable! As is the dog. 😉 My sister and I were planning to walk to our Farmer’s Market, but the weather had other plans. Better luck next weekend. Have a great day, and enjoy the beer tasting!

30 Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) September 11, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Kiwi skins are delicious. I like to tell people that it’s like eating a peach, and then they aren’t quite as weirded out by eating fuzz.

I love hodge podge salads filled with flavor. Yours looks delish! 😀

31 Shannon (The Daily Balance) September 11, 2010 at 3:04 pm

i thought this post was going to be about barbara kingsolver’s animal, vegetable, miracle – have you read it? GREAT read — I’ll send you mine if you wanna read it – it’s worth spreading the love! 😉

32 Christena September 11, 2010 at 5:05 pm

I did too! And I second the recommendation on the book.

33 Susan Mc September 11, 2010 at 8:04 pm

I third it!

34 Stacey @ The Habit of Healthy September 11, 2010 at 3:09 pm

‘Aint nothing wrong with kiwi skins which I now love thanks to you! Love the list of beers you want to try. :)

35 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) September 11, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Awww, that kitty looks JUST like our Gingerbread that we lost in June. 😥

Love your eclectic salad. It covers all the bases. :)

36 Katie @ peacebeme September 11, 2010 at 3:21 pm

I WANT THAT SHIRT! Where did you get it?!

37 Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy September 11, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I have to add to the rest that I REALLY love that shirt! I’m going to try to find it online right now! :)

38 La. September 11, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I’m with everyone else! I didn’t know that you could eat the skin! I enjoy mango skin, so I’m open to trying new things. Thanks Kath!

39 Seglare September 11, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I loved the pictures of the cat and dog (and glad I’m not the only one taking pictures of random animals I meet in town :D)).

Your onion shirt is great, too! I do eat onions if someone cooks them for me, but I HATE raw onions and the smell of any onions (raw or fried), which is why I rarely use them myself.

40 Krystina September 11, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Have fun tonight. 😀

41 Kelsey @ CleanTeenKelsey September 11, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Haha! I love the animal pictures. So cute. The farmers’ market produce looks wonderful and the salad looks awesome. :) Love the onion shirt! If I eat onions they HAVE to be cooked.

42 Mary @ Bites and Bliss September 11, 2010 at 3:58 pm

I bet you get a lot of “you eat the skin?!” comments whenever you post a kiwi on the blog. 😛 I always have to defend the poor little fuzzy fruit! The skin makes it 10x better!

43 stacey-healthylife September 11, 2010 at 4:09 pm

I love orange kitties as I have one myself. So that little guy in the picture I love. :)

44 Lindsey @ Gingerbread Bagels September 11, 2010 at 4:13 pm

That shirt is too funny! Were there any people selling onion?! :)

45 Deva (Voracious Vorilee) September 11, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I tried eating kiwi skin earlier this year, but I didn’t like it much. It makes my mouth itch!

46 Sarah @ Sarah's Shaping Up September 11, 2010 at 4:54 pm

Sounds like a great Saturday afternoon! :)

47 Sportsgirl September 11, 2010 at 5:30 pm

I’m jealous you get to go to a beer festival! How fun!

48 Cara Craves... September 11, 2010 at 5:32 pm

Cutest cat!
I love orange and white cats…so precious.

49 Bess @ Bess Be Fit September 11, 2010 at 6:07 pm

I can see you have Dogfish Punkin on your list of beers! I just had that one last night…I really liked it but haven’t tried any other pumpkin beers to compare it to. But I thought it was delicious!

50 Heather (Heather's Dish) September 11, 2010 at 6:19 pm

kath, i’ll eat enough onions for the both of us…LOVE those things!

51 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) September 11, 2010 at 7:17 pm

I love onions, too!! In fact, I’m borderline obsessed with them, LOL.

52 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin September 11, 2010 at 6:32 pm

I really need to start making lists because I always forget what I wanted to buy and buy things I don’t need!

53 Meg Paquette September 11, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Does the back say, “you have to check the box!!” I LOVE that shirt!

54 Krystina September 11, 2010 at 8:02 pm

I love eating kiwi with the skin!

55 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat September 11, 2010 at 8:04 pm

I still can’t bring myself to eat the kiwi skin… but skinless it’s one of my favourite fruits too!

56 Bee Goes Bananas September 11, 2010 at 9:30 pm

What an adorable cat! Sounds like a great Saturday!!

57 Hannah September 11, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Beer cheat sheet – I love it! And your shirt is awesome. I think I need one that reads “More chocolate More chocolate More chocolate” 😛

58 Ella September 11, 2010 at 10:50 pm

hey Kath! You always take the cutest photos of cats and dogs… do you think you guys will ever get one?

59 Ashley September 12, 2010 at 1:04 am

Love this post!! I’m not a fan of that Dogfish Pumpkin beer. I didn’t think it was near pumpkiny enough, especially with the high price tag for 4 beers. What a fun night!! How dare you bring up Big Daddys!!! I miss it so much 😉 Their BBburger + fries WERE to.die.for. :) xo

60 Jesna September 12, 2010 at 1:34 am

I cannot believe you will not eat onions! I have to say, as an adult, that there is not any one thing I will NEVER eat. Come on!

61 Kath September 12, 2010 at 8:17 am

If you could taste them in your breath for 48 hours, you wouldn’t eat them either

62 Wei-Wei September 12, 2010 at 3:15 am

I’m still squeamish about kiwi skins. Never tried eating them before. C’mon, it’s FUZZY.

63 Kath September 12, 2010 at 8:17 am

The Onion shirt was a gift from VeggieGirl and I’m not sure where she got it!

64 hemp jogger September 12, 2010 at 8:47 am

that shirt is hysterical! although i adore them, that is just too perfect for you :) love it.

65 Anne@ Food Loving Polar Bear September 12, 2010 at 9:11 am

The onion shirt is so funny 😀 ps. I love kiwi but I just can’t make myself to eat the skin!

66 Rachelle September 13, 2010 at 11:04 pm

I LOVE that shirt!
If only I could show it to my MOM— who always tries to force feed me onions. Bla-yucky!

WHERE did you get that shirt??? I want one 😉

67 Kath September 14, 2010 at 8:58 am

It’s from Bravo TV’s shop and it’s not made anymore :(
