How cool? We eat our pancakes with the syrup on the side, too!

The pancakes look super yummy. If I ever make it to Great Harvest, I will have to pick some of that mix up.

smilesara ,
Without knowing the amount of calories you are currently eating, your exercise levels + lifestyle and your weight, etc. to determine your true needs, I really can't give a good response. But if you are truly undereating, then you should start eating the correct amount for your body immediately - there's no reason to slowly increase because you NEED that fuel. Sorry I can't give any specifics.

As for NET calories, the premise is:

Calories to maintain without exercise - 300-500 stopping at 1200 = NET

NET + Exercise = How many to eat per day.

Because exercise calories burned changes so much each day, some days you might need a lot more (running 10 miles) and some days a lot less (walking for 30 minutes) so it allows your intake to adjust to your activity level for that day. It's a good weight loss approach for those who are very active because it ensures you are eating enough to fuel your basal metabolism and part of your workouts but still at a 300-500 kcal defect at the end of the day. Make sense?

hey kath,
i know you aren't an RD (yet! soon!) but i was hoping you could answer this question again:
as a new years resolution, i've started food diarying again and realize that i am eating too few calories -- i'm not sure how this happened? maybe my attempts to "be good" went overboard!
i want to increase (and increase protein intake too) but not sure if it is a good idea to add all the extra calories right away or do so gradually?
also, could you explain the whole "eating back your exercise" calories again? is that what you did when you were trying to lose weight? (i know you explained it in the FAQ, but i was a bit confused)...
