Today’s Menu

February 11, 2010

Good morning boys and girls.

Today’s menu features a green smoothie in a bowl topped with granola and your choice of toast with sunflower butter or pumpkin oatmeal served with juice, milk or coffee.

And now for your weather forecast: today will be sunny with a high of 47*.

Please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance…..

I took the green smoothie off the line. It’s a winner!

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 kale leaves
  • 1 big handful spinach
  • 1/2 tbsp flax
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 packet Chocolate Amazing Meal
  • With Mix My Granola on top

I kept the smoothie lighter (omitting oats + cottage cheese possibilities) and had a slice of High Five Fiber on the side with Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower butter.

I am so loving this stuff. The sunflower has this realllllly nutty taste, and the cinnamon + vanilla flavors make it like dessert.

Can you BELIEVE today is my last day of foodservice!? So sad. Yet so happy. About to make this hour commute for the last time. Really the commute hasn’t been bad at all. I’ve loved my podcasts and the time to myself. But what really sucks is the TWO whole hours that just disappear from my day. My next rotation doesn’t begin until 9AM!!!!!!!!!! And it’s only 10-15 minutes away. Holy cow. I might go back to morning workouts for those 3 weeks.

Headed out at 6:30 for the final time!

Yay for the last early morning! The beginning of your post made me giggle. I hope this school has kids reading the announcements, which was definitely the biggest honor ever at my elementary school!

8 Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries February 11, 2010 at 7:21 am

10 Emily Eats and Exercises February 11, 2010 at 7:24 am

That smoothie is such a pretty green color. It’s to cold here for me to want SIAB but I’ll have to try it in the spring. Have fun on your last day. If you keep yourself on the same sleep schedule you’ll have TONS of time in the mornings!

11 Kristen @ Change of Pace February 11, 2010 at 7:25 am

Aww I hope you have a good last day! I think I’ll have a SIAB for bfast too :)

15 Jenn @ Livewellfit February 11, 2010 at 7:47 am

Last day at food service, man that was fast.

I am currently obsessed with morning/lunch smoothies. Even though it’s so cold out I can’t get enough of my green, banana, chocolatey items! :)

16 kara February 11, 2010 at 7:47 am

Have an awesome last day – life will seem so easy now :)

23 Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) February 11, 2010 at 8:09 am

Wow, I can’t believe this is already the last day. How time flies…

Loving the Naturally Nutty — where I can find some? — but the green breakfast smoothies just don’t do it for me. Snack, yes. Breakfast, no. ;)

24 Kath February 11, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Open Sky of course! Easy access :)

29 Jackie February 11, 2010 at 8:45 am

Hi! I’m new to your blog, and food blogs and general, (and I’m LOVING IT). I love to eat healthy and I’m an active college student. I was wondering what is High Five Fiber bread? It looks LOVELY. And if you can buy it, I’d love to know where.. :P And if you can make it.. Would love to know how.. :) Have a great day!

30 Kath February 11, 2010 at 7:35 pm

it’s from Great Harvest Bread Co. where Matt works as a baker and where we are opening a franchise this fall in Charlottesville, VA!

31 Nicole February 11, 2010 at 8:48 am

So I’m thinking about trying that sunflower butter….I am a HUGE PB person and I’m just starting to get into AB but I find it to be a little gritty and a little bit of a transition. What is the texture like on the SB? Also, I like my nut butters a little sweet so I think this would be a good one for me to try. What are your thoughts? Oh…and I LOVE you blog! Keep up the good work!

32 Kath February 11, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Based on your description, I think you’d LOVE it! The texture is slightly gritty – but more from sugar than from the sunflower, I think. It’s a little sweet and very creamy and nutty!

33 Sarah R February 11, 2010 at 8:51 am

Wow! It has gone fast! You’re getting so close to being the real deal!

34 Eileen February 11, 2010 at 8:56 am

Hi Kath,
Can you share the nutritional information on that Cinnamon VAnilla sunflower nut butter? I’m wondering about it’s sugar content specifically.

Thank you,

35 Kath February 11, 2010 at 7:36 pm

It’s on

36 Heather @ Side of Sneakers February 11, 2010 at 9:05 am

I’ll bet you’re glad the driving is done… and does anyone know if that sunflower butter is nut free? That might solve my PB craving cause i’m allergic to PB and blogs make it look sooooo oooo good.

65 Kath February 11, 2010 at 7:36 pm

I am not sure – I’d check the NN website

66 Kalli@Fitandfortysomething February 11, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Wow the time has just flown by! Can’t believe you are done already. You think you might considering teaching now? Hee Hee….Join us crazy people!

67 Hannah February 11, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Is the smoothie noticeable thinner without the oats in it? Or can you not really notice a difference? It looks as delicious :P

68 Kath February 11, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Hmmm..I think the thickness depends more on the liquid and banana ratio, but I suppose it was a little thinner.

69 bridget February 11, 2010 at 10:37 pm

How exciting re: the GH franchise … I didn’t realize … what fun and what a journey it will be – amazing … best wishes!

70 Misty February 12, 2010 at 12:08 am

73 Katelyn February 13, 2010 at 12:45 pm

Hey! I’m a total newbie at blog-reading, but I am loving it!! Especially yours… right up my alley. This green smoothie looks very interesting and I’d love to try it… how do you make it? Just blend it all together and voila? What else goes in it usually? (You said you left out a few things?)

Thanks and keep up the awesome blogging!

74 Kath February 13, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Yep – just put above ingredients in a blender (kale works best with a Vita-mix though) and blend away. You can’t taste the spinach at all!
